Basic Properties of Polymer Cement Composites with Polymer Dispersions and Cement for Crack Repair (폴리머 디스퍼전과 시멘트로 만든 균열보수용 폴리머 시멘트 복합체의 기초적 성질)

  • The aim of this study was to produce polymer cement composites (PCCs) composed of polymer dispersion and cement as crack repair materials for RC structures, and to investigate their fundamental properties. The test mixtures for the study were based on EVA and SAE polymer dispersions, and the water-cement ratio was determined while varying the polymer-cement ratio(P/C) in four different levels (20%, 60%, 80%, and 100%) to achieve the desired viscosity of PCCs considering their fillability as crack repair materials. Additionally, silica fume was incorporated into P/C 80% and 100% specimens to enhance their stiffness. The basic properties of PCCs as crack repair materials, such as viscosity, flowability, fillability, tensile strength, elongation, and modulus of elasticity, were examined. The results showed that P/C depending on the type of polymer significantly affected the viscosity and flowability, and appropriate w/c ratios were needed to achieve the desired viscosity for the mixture design with consideration of fillability as crack repair materials for RC structures. All designed mixtures in this study exhibited excellent fillability. The tensile strength and elongation of PCCs satisfied the KS regulation for cement- polymer modified waterproofing coatings. The incorporation of silica fume improved the tensile strength and modulus of elasticity of PCCs. Depending on the type of polymer, mixtures using SAE showed better fundamental properties as crack repair materials for RC structures compared to those using EVA. In conclusion, SAE-based P/C 80% or 100% with the addition of up to 30% silica fume can be recommended as suitable mixtures for crack repair of RC structures.

  • Since its invention in the $19^{th}$ century, Reinforced Concrete (RC) has been widely used in the construction of a lot of different structures, as buildings, bridges, nuclear central plants, or even ships. The details of the mechanical response for this kind of structures depends directly upon the material behavior of each component: concrete and steel, as well as their interaction through the bond-slip, which makes a rigorous engineering analysis of RC structures quite complicated. Consequently, the practical calculation of RC structures is done by adopting a lot of simplifications and hypotheses validated in the elastic range. Nevertheless, as soon as any RC structural element is working in the inelastic range, it is possible to obtain the numerical prediction of its realistic behavior only through the use of non linear analysis. The aim of this work is to develop a new kind of Finite Element: the "Enhanced Solid Element (ESE)" which takes into account the complex composition of reinforced concrete, being able to handle each dissipative material behavior and their different deformations, and on the other hand, conserving a simplified shape for engineering applications. Based on the recent XFEM developments, we introduce the concept of nodal enrichment to represent kinematics of steel rebars as well as bonding. This enrichment allows to reproduce the strain incompatibility between concrete and steel that occurs because of the bond degradation and slip. This formulation was tested with a couple of simple examples and compared to the results obtained from other standard formulations.

An innovative experimental method to upgrade performance of external weak RC joints using fused steel prop plus sheets

  • In this paper, the efficiency and effectiveness of two strengthening methods for upgrading behavior of the two external weak reinforced concrete (RC) beam-column joints were experimentally investigated under cyclic loading. Since two deficient external RC joints with reduced beam height and low strength concrete were strengthened using one-way steel prop and curbs with and without steel revival sheets on the beam. The cyclic performance of these strengthened specimens were compared with two another control external RC beam-column joints, one the standard RC joint that had not two mentioned deficiencies and another had both. Therefore, four half-scale RC joints were tested under cyclic loading.The experimental results showed that these innovative strengthening methods (RC joint with revival sheet specially) surmounted the deficiencies of weak RC joints and upgraded their performance and bearing capacity, stiffness degradation, energy absorption, up to those of standard RC joint. Also, results exhibited that the prop at joint acted as a fuse element due to adding steel revival sheets on the RC beam and showed better behavior than that of the specimen without steel revival sheets. In other words by stiffening of beam, the prop collected all damages due to cyclic loading at itself and acted as the first line of defense and prevented from sever damages at RC joint.

Experimental investigation on the seismic behavior of reinforced concrete column-steel beam subassemblies

  • The composite reinforced concrete and steel (RCS) structural systems have larger structural lateral stiffness, higher inherent structural damping, and faster construction speed than either traditional reinforcement concrete or steel structures. In this paper, four RCS subassemblies with or without the RC slab designed following a strong column-weak beam philosophy were constructed and tested under reversed-cyclic loading. Parameters including the width of slab and composite effect of the RC slab and beam were explored. The test results showed that all specimens performed in a ductile manner with plastic hinges formed in the beam ends near the column faces. The seismic responses of composite connections are influenced significantly by different width of slabs. Compared with that of the steel beam without the RC slab, it was found that the load carrying capacity of composite connections with the RC slab increased by 30% on average, and strength degradation, energy dissipation also had better performance, while the ductility of that were almost the same. Furthermore, the contribution of connection deformation to the overall specimen displacement was analyzed and compared. It decreased approximately 10% due to the coupling effect in the columns and beams with the RC slab. Based on the test result, some suggestions are presented for the design of composite RCS joints.

  • Recently, there is to increase interest in seismic performance of piers. Hollow section is applied to increasing the seismic performance of piers. However, hollow RC pier becomes the biaixial confining state because hollow part is not confined. The pier is developed brittle failure from inner face in hollow part. A tube is inserted in hollow part to become the weakness. This is ICH RC(Internally Confined Hollow RC) pier. This pier is enhanced stiffness, strength, and ductility by core concrete has triaxial confining stress. In this paper is researched about parameters effect the seismic performance. Parameters are hollow ratio, transverse reinforcement, longitudinal reinforcement, and concrete strength.

Prediction of Deformation of Shear Reinforcement and Shear Crack Width of Reinforced Concrete Members using Truss Models (트러스 모델을 이용한 철근콘크리트 부재의 전단철근 및 전단균열폭의 변형 예측)

  • This paper predicted the shear deformation, such as strain of shear reinforcement and shear track width, of reinforced concrete (RC) members using Transformation Angle Truss Model (TATM) in order to apply to the shea, analysis of RC buildings. To check the validity of TATM for the shear deformation of RC beams, four RC beams with different shear span-to-depth ratios were cast, instrumented and tested. Observed results were compared with theoretical results by MCFT(Response-2000), RA-STM, FA-STM, and TATM. The proposed model, TATM, better predicted the relationships of the shear stress-strain of shear reinforcement and the shear stress-shear track width than other truss models.

Nonlinear analysis of RC beams strengthened by externally bonded plates

  • External bonding of steel or FRP plates to reinforced concrete (RC) structures has been a popular method for strengthening RC structures; however, unexpected premature failure often occurs due to debonding between the concrete and the epoxy. We proposed a Coulomb criterion with a constant failure surface as the debonding failure criterion for the concrete-epoxy interface. Diagonal shear bonding tests were conducted to determine the debonding properties that were related to the failure criterion, such as the angle of internal friction and the coefficient of cohesion. In addition, an interface element that utilized the Coulomb criterion was implemented in a nonlinear finite element analysis program to simulate debonding failure behavior. Experimental studies and numerical analysies on RC beams strengthened by an externally bonded steel or FRP plate were used to determine the range of the coefficient of cohesion. The results that were presented prove that premature failure loads of strengthened RC beams can be predicted with using the bonding properties and the finite element program with including the proposed Coulomb criterion.

The effect of finite element modeling assumptions on collapse capacity of an RC frame building

  • The main objective of seismic codes is to prevent structural collapse and ensure life safety. Collapse probability of a structure is usually assessed by making a series of analytical model assumptions. This paper investigates the effect of finite element modeling (FEM) assumptions on the estimated collapse capacity of a reinforced concrete (RC) frame building and points out the modeling limitations. Widely used element formulations and hysteresis models are considered in the analysis. A full-scale, three-story RC frame building was utilized as the experimental model. Alternative finite element models are established by adopting a range of different modeling strategies. Using each model, the collapse capacity of the structure is evaluated via Incremental Dynamic Analysis (IDA). Results indicate that the analytically estimated collapse capacities are significantly sensitive to the utilized modeling approaches. Furthermore, results also show that models that represent stiffness degradation lead to a better correlation between the actual and analytical responses. Results of this study are expected to be useful for in developing proper models for assessing the collapse probability of RC frame structures.

Analytical Studies for Predicting Behaviors of RC Beams Retrofitted with Hybrid FRPs (하이브리드 FRP로 보강된 콘크리트 보의 거동 예측을 위한 해석연구)

  • This study aims at predicting structural behaviors of RC (Reinforced Concrete) beams retrofitted with hybrid FRPs (Fiber Reinforced Polymers). Toward this goal, structural analysis for the RC beams retrofitted with hybrid FRPs are performed and validated using existing experimental data. For the analysis, failure models due to debonding of FRPs and concrete separation are implemented within FE (Finite Element) model, based on Smith and Teng, model, and Teng and Yao model, respectively. Nonlinear material and geometrical effects are also included in the analysis. The suggested modeling approaches are able to predict structural behaviors of RC beams retrofitted with hybrid FRPs similar to the experimental data, however, a numerical model needs to be developed in order to predict failure strength of RC beams retrofitted with hybrid FRPs accurately.
