  • For checking influence of load-position and system of stress-transmission in precast concrete bridge deck system, the test composite bridge was made a experiment by the wheel load machine. The result of experiment was the loop joint system of the precast decks has a difference which was the transmission system of longitudinal stress, comparing with general RC bridge deck system. The loop joint system has a behavior independently.

  • Lap splice in plastic hinge region of RC bridge piers is inevitable because of the constructional joint between footing and column. RC circular columns with lap-splice in plastic hinge region are widely used in Korean highway bridges. It is, however, believed that there are not many experimental research works for nonlinear behavior of these columns subjected to earthquake motions. This study has been performed to verify the effect of axial force, lap splice and confinement steel ratio for the seismic behaviour of reinforced concrete bridge piers. Quasi-static test have been done to investigate the physical seismic performance of RC bridge piers, such as displacement ductility and enemy absorption.

  • Most widened bridges have been constructed by the joining-construction method that makes new and existing bridge structurally single structure. However, joing-construction method has several problems in design and construction viewpoint. Therefore, this study is conducted in order to investigate structural behavior of widened RC slab and traffic-induced vibration of existing bridge during placing and curing of new concrete by the prototype flexural fatigue test. From the results of this study, it is shown that stress-concentration and slip occur between concrete and reinforcing rod at joint section but the reduction of load carrying capacity and of fatigue strength is negligible according to the traffic-induced vibration as well as the difference of construction method. A reasonable construction method for the bridge widening which takes into account the effects of the traffic-induced vibration and S-N curve for the widened bridge are also proposed.

  • The connection system of steel pile and RC footing is an important structure, because the total load of upper construction should be transferred through this joint construction of different two materials-steel and RC-with strongly changed section area. Although many connection systems have been developed, their structural and economical efficiency and workability are often insufficient. Therefore, a new connecting system was developed to improve the problems of current systems. The divided arc plate could improve the workability and economical efficiency, structural efficiency could be reached by welding construction. The main purpose of the research is to evaluate the structural behavior of the new designed connection system through experiments and numerical analysis.

  • Many RC structures built without seismic provisions have exhibited brittle shear failures in the beam-column joint area, and resulted in large permanent deformations and structural collapse. This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation pertaining to the use of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer(FRP) for strengthening of RC beam-column connections. The selective upgrade is obtained by choosing different combinations and locations of carbon FRP sheets to determine the effective way to improve the structural performance of joints. Experimental results demonstrate significant improvement of flexural capacity and ductility of beam-column connections originally built without seismic details.

  • An experimental study was carried out for beam-column joints composed of RC column and RS beams. The purpose of this study is to examine the inelastic seismic behavior for the RC-RS connection. Two interior and one exterior beam-column assemblies with variable moment ratios were tested. Experimental results showed that strength and deformability except stiffness were satisfactory. It is considered that the lack of stiffness was due to the slipping of steel beam from RS beam. The behavioral characteristics of the RC-RS connection were evaluated according to the quideline suggested by Hawkins et al. Nominal strength at 5 % joint distortion was not satisfactory, but all the other requirements, such as strength preserving capability, energy dissipation, and initial stiffness and strength ratios after peak load were satisfactory compared with the guideline. Thus it was concluded that the RC-RS connections can maintain ductility with excellent energy-dissipating capacity if being provided with appropriate reinforced structural system such as RC core wall for the initial lateral stiffness.

  • Beam-column joints are generally recognized as the critical regions in the moment resisting reinforced concrete (RC) frames subjected to both lateral and vertical loads. As a result of severe lateral load such as seismic loading, the joint region is subjected to horizontal and vertical shear forces whose magnitudes are many times higher than in column and adjacent beam. Consequently, much larger bond and shear stresses are required to sustain these magnified forces. The critical deterioration of potential shear strength in the joint area should not occur until ductile capacity of adjacent beams reach the design demand. In this study, a method was provided to predict the deformability of reinforced concrete beam-column joints failing in shear after the plastic hinges developed at both ends of the adjacent beams. In order to verify the deformability estimated by the proposed method, an experimental study consisting of three joint specimens with varying tensile reinforcement ratios was carried out. The result between the observed and predicted behavior of the joints showed reasonably good agreement.

  • The panel shear and bearing strengths determining the seismic resistance of reinforced concrete column-to-steel beam connections are predicted by various methods for four previously tested exterior beam-column joints. The analytical approach to model the joint deformation is also examined. Several analyses incorporating the deformations of panel shear and bearing in the joint are demonstrated using a analyses incorporating the deformations of panel shear and bearing in the joint are demonstrated using a fairly simple connection model in the commercial packages such as Drain2dx and IDARC. The strength prediction results indicated that the ASCE method with the modifcation of the comprssion strut contribution is th most accurate. It is also considered that the analytical model presented including the joint deformation can be used for the overall analysis

  • In the seismical capacity evaluation for RC structure wall-slab joint is very important factor. Because lateral load is resistance element and gravity load resistance element are acted mutually in the wall-slab joint. In this paper, to improve the seismic capacity of the wall-slab joint in the existing wall type apartments experiment which improve and retrofit a seismic capacity by unequal angle bracing and carbon sheet attachment are carried out. These methods are also economic and simple in mitigating seismic hazard, improve earthquake-resistance performance, and reduce risk level of building occupants. From the experimental results, the change of strength, degration of stiffness, and energy dissipation are evaluated. It can be concluded that these methods are effective in improving the seismic performance.

  • The square tubed-reinforced concrete (TRC) column is a kind of special concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) columns, in which the outer thin-walled steel tube does not pass through the beam-column joint, so that the longitudinal steel reinforcing bars in the RC beam are continuous through the connection zone. However, there is a possible decrease of the axial bearing capacity at the TRC column to RC beam connection due to the discontinuity of the column tube, which is a concern to engineers. 24 connections and 7 square TRC columns were tested under axial compression. The primary parameters considered in the tests are: (1) connection location (corner, exterior and interior); (2) dimensions of RC beam cross section; (3) RC beam type (with or without horizontal haunches); (4) tube type (with or without stiffening ribs). The test results show that all specimens have relatively high load-carrying capacity and satisfactory ductility. With a proper design, the connections exhibit higher axial resistance and better ductility performance than the TRC column. The feasibility of this type of connections is verified.
