This paper introduces a new steel jacketing method for reinforced concrete columns with lap splice and evaluates its performance by a series of axial tests of concrete cylinders. At first, 45 concrete cylinders were fabricated with varying the design compressive strengths of 21, 27 and 35 MPa and, then, the part of them was jacketed with two-split-steel jackets under lateral confining pressure. The parameters in the first test were the steel jacket's thickness and the existence of adhesive between steel and concrete surface. In the second test, whole steel jackets were used to wrap cylinders with lateral pressure. Also, a double-layer jacket consisted of two steel plates was introduced; a cylinder was jacketed by two steel plates one after another. The effect of the new method was verified through comparing the results of the compressive tests for plain and jacketed cylinders. The steel jacket built following the new method showed good results of increasing the compressive strength and ductility of the jacketed cylinders with respect to the plain cylinders. The thicker steel jackets showed the more increased compressive strength, and the ductility at failure depended on the welding quality on steel jackets. The adhesive between steel and concrete surface reduced the confining effect of the steel jackets. The whole jacket showed more ductile behavior than the two-split jackets. The double-layered jackets were estimated to possess an equal performance to that of a single steel jacket having the same thickness of the double-layered jacket. Finally, the experimental results were compared with the constitutive model of steel-jacketed concrete; which showed a good agreement between the experimental results and the models.
This study introduced a new steel-jacketing method to retrofit RC columns. It also estimated the performance of steel-jacketed concrete cylinders. Twelve concrete cylinders were fabricated with varying steel jacket thicknesses of 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 mm. Lateral confining pressure was applied with three clamps and the performance of plain concrete cylinders was compared with that of steel-jacketed cylinders. Steel jacket proved to be effective in increasing the strength of the cylinder. Finally, Li's constitutive model was compared with that of the experimentalresults. However, Li's model showed incongruity in Region II, which indicates the region after the yield of steel jackets. Therefore, the modified value of n was used for the region and the model showed a good agreement.
Self-compacting Concrete (SCC) Filled Square steel Tubes (SCFST) was used to strengthen square RC columns. To establish the efficiency of this strengthening method, 17 columns were tested under axial compression loading including 3 RC columns without any strengthening (WRC), 1 RC column strengthened with concrete jacket (CRC), 13 RC columns strengthened with self-compacting concrete filled square steel tubes (SRC). The experimental results showed that the use of SCFST is interesting since the ductility and the bearing capacity of the RC columns are greatly improved. The improvement ratio is significantly affected by the nominal wall thickness of steel tubes (t), the strength grade of strengthening concrete (C), and the length-to-width ratio (L / B) of the specimens. In order to quantitatively analyze the effect of these test parameters on axial loading behavior of the SRC columns, three performance indices, enhancement ratio (ER), ductility index (DI), and confinement ratio (CR), were used. The strength of the SRC columns obtained from the experiments was then employed to verify the proposed mode referring to the relevant codes. It was found that codes DBJ13-51 could relatively predict the strength of the SRC columns accurately, and codes AIJ and BS5400 were relatively conservative.
This study presents test results of RC beams strengthened by carbon fiber sheet(CFS), carbon fiber reinforced plastics(CFRP) or glass fiber reinforced plastics(GFRP) for increasing shear resistance. Nineteen specimens were tested, and the test was performed with different parameters including the type of strengthening materials(CFS, GFRP, CFRP), shear-strengthening methods(wing type, jacket type, strip type), strip-spacing, strengthening direction of FRP. The test results show that shear-damaged RC beams strengthened by FRP(CFS, GFRP, CFRP) have more improved the shear capacity. The mathematical model based on plastic theory was also developed to predict shear strength of shear-damaged RC beams strengthened by FRP. The predictions using the mathematical model. are agreed with the observations from the observed shear strengths for 19 test beams.
This experimental study investigates the effectiveness of applying carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) jackets for the retrofit of short reinforced concrete (RC) columns with inadequate transverse reinforcement and stirrup spacing to longitudinal rebar diameter equal to 12. RC columns scaled at 1/3, with round and square section, were subjected to axial compression up to failure. A damage scale is introduced for the assessment of the damage severity, which focusses on the extent of buckling of the longitudinal rebars. The damaged specimens were subsequently repaired with unidirectional CFRP jackets without any treatment of the buckled reinforcing bars and were finally re-tested to failure. Test results indicate that CFRP jackets may be effectively applied to rehabilitate RC columns (a) with inadequate transverse reinforcement constructed according to older practices so as to meet modern code requirements, and (b) with moderately buckled bars without the need of previously repairing the reinforcement bars, an application technique which may considerably facilitate the retrofit of earthquake damaged RC columns. Factors for the estimation of the reduced mechanical properties of the repaired specimens compared to the respective values for intact CFRP-jacketed specimens, in relation to the level of damage prior to retrofit, are proposed both for the compressive strength and the average modulus of elasticity. It was determined that the compressive strength of the retrofitted CFRP-jacketed columns is reduced by 90% to 65%, while the average modulus of elasticity is lower by 60% to 25% in respect to similar undamaged columns jacketed with the same layers of CFRP.
Corrosion of steel reinforcement is a principal cause of deterioration of RC columns. Making these corrosion-damaged columns conform to new safety regulations and functions is a tremendous technological challenge. This study presented an experimental investigation on steel-concrete jacketed corrosion-damaged RC columns. The influences of steel jacket thickness and concrete strength on the enhancement performance of the strengthened specimens were investigated. The results showed that the use of steel-concrete jacketing is efficient since the stub strengthened columns behaved in a more ductile manner. Moreover, the ultimate strength of the corrosion-damaged RC columns is increased by an average of 5.3 times, and the ductility is also significantly improved by the strengthening method. The bearing capacity of the strengthening columns increases with the steel tube thickness increasing, and the strengthening concrete strength has a positive impact on both bearing capacity, whereas a negative influence on the ductility. Subsequently, a numerical model was developed to predict the behavior of the retrofitted columns. The model takes into account corrosion-damage of steel rebar and confining enhancement supplied by the steel tube. Comparative results with the experimental results indicated that the developed numerical model is an effective simulation. Based on extensive verified numerical studies, a design equation was proposed and found to predict well the ultimate eccentric strength of the strengthened columns.
Reinforced concrete (RC) columns can be strengthened by direct fastening of steel plates around a column, forming composite actions. This method can increase both the total load bearing area and the concrete confinement stress. To predict the axial load resistance of strengthened RC columns, the equivalent passive confinement stress of the stirrups and the steel jacket should be accurately quantified, which requires the stress in the stirrups and shear force in the connections to be first obtained. In this paper, parameters, i.e., the stress ratio of the stirrups and shear force ratio of steel plate connectors are utilized to quantify the stress of the stirrups and shear force in the connections. A mechanical model for determining the stress ratio of the stirrups and shear force ratio of steel plate connectors is proposed and validated using the experimental results in a previous study. The model is found to be robust. Subsequently, a parametric study is conducted and the optimum stress ratios of the stirrups and the optimum shear force ratios of connectors are proposed for engineering designs.

Lap splices were located in the plastic hinge region of most bridge piers that were constructed before the adoption of the seismic design provision of Korea Highway Design Specification on 1992. This research aims at evaluating the seismic performance of reinforced concrete bridge piers with lap-spliced longitudinal steels, which were strengthened with prestressed steel jacket in the plastic hinge region. Quasi-static test was used to investigate the seismic performance enhancement of RC test specimens. Conventional method applied mortar grouting inside steel jacket, but this research did not apply mortar grouting inside steel plate. Four test specimens in an aspect of 3.5 were constructed with 400 mm in diameter and 1600 mm in height. Test parameters are the lap splice of longitudinal reinforcing steels and thickness of steel jacket.

Flexural tests on 2.4m long reinforced concrete beams with epoxy-bonded GFRP plates are reported in these tests. The selected experimental variables are strengthening plate length, plate thickness, plate width and the method of anchoring the plate ends. The effects of these variables in overall behavior are discussed. The results generally indicate that the flexural strength of strengthened beams is increased. The ductile behavior of tested beams in inversely proportional to the plate thickness, plate width. The use of an U-jacket plate provided a proper anchorage system and improved the ductility of beams.
This study aims to identify the effect of both longitudinal reinforcement details and damage level on making a decision of repairing pre-damaged bridge columns using basalt fiber reinforced polymer (BFRP) jackets. Two RC bridge columns with improper details of the longitudinal and/or transverse reinforcement were tested under the effect of a constant axial load and increasing lateral cyclic loading. Test results showed that the lap-splice column exhibited an inferior performance where it showed rapid degradation of strength before achieving the theoretical strength and its deformation capacity was limited; however, quick restoration is possible through a suitable rehabilitation technique. On the other hand, expensive repair or even complete replacement could be the decision for the column with the confinement failure mode. After that, a rehabilitation technique using external BFRP jacket was adopted. Performance-based design details guaranteeing the enhancement in the inelastic performance of both damaged columns were addressed and defined. Test results of the repaired columns confirmed that both reparability and the required repairing time of damage structures are dependent on the reinforcement details at the plastic hinge zone. Furthermore, lap-splice of longitudinal reinforcement could be applied as a key design-tool controlling reparability and restorability of RC structures after massive actions.
