Bridges are structures where safety must be ensured. Generally, the destruction mechanism of bridge deck shows punching shear. Lately, the high-strength concrete is often used to increase the lifespan of bridges. The benefits of using the high-strength concrete are that it increases the durability and strength. On the contrary, it reduces the cross-section of the bridges. This study suggested the optimal thickness of bridge deck with application of high-strength concrete and the study evaluated its structural performance experimentally. The evaluation result shows that 180 mm and 190 mm of thickness are optimal for 100 MPa and 120 MPa high-strength concrete bridge deck respectively.

The fatigue durability test using the actual size beam was performed with a cramp joint in order to apply to the highway bridge deck slab. Three types of beam were investigated for durability performance by considering stress conditions in real bridge deck slabs, 1) A beam with major shear force applied at the joint (RC Type) 2) A beam with major bending moments applied at the joint (PSC Type) 3) A beam with the pure shear applied at the joint. The experiment for beams with cramp joints showed that the cramp joint had enough durability for fatigue regardless of the overlaid length of the looped distribution bars under the current design strength level. Moreover, it was clarified that the enough durability for fatigue under the load repetition was achieved by increasing the joint span grater than 1.5D with the consideration of the deformation due to reduction in joint stiffness.

Steel-Concrete Composite Deck with I-beam welded is lighter and easier to construct than conventional in situ reinforced concrete slabs due to the I-beam embedded in the corrugated slab. For the calculation of effective flexural rigidity of conventional reinforced concrete structures, methods suggested in Design Standard for Roads and Bridges and ACI have been used. In this paper, the calculation methods were applied to steel-concrete composite deck with I-beam welded and then results of the steel-concrete composite deck were compared with those of reinforced concrete slabs. In addition, applicability of the methods to steel-concrete composite deck with I-beam welded was estimated. In order to compare the effective flexural rigidity, flexural experiments were conducted. Fifteen slabs were built and the variables considered in the experiments were studs, length of the slab, shape of the section and connecting methods.
In recent years, extension of life span of buildings is becoming an important issue in our society. To improve the life span of buildings, rhamen structure construction and long-spanned structures are advantageous. And in order to achieve this goal, structural elements of buildings must be light and slender. As an alternative method, general porous slabs are used frequently domestically and internationally. But the study on the porous slabs using T-deck plate and assembly of light weight precast construction is insufficient at present. In this study, flexural and fatigue tests were performed on six specimens to verify structural performance and serviceability. The main parameters of the specimens were light weight and T-deck plate construction possibility as well as slab thickness. The test results indicated that the strength of porous slabs using T-deck plate and assembly of light weight were much better than general RC slabs and porous slabs without T-deck plate. And stiffness was much better than that of other tested slabs.

Recent increasing traffic volumes have made many bridges on highway be widened. In widening of existing bridges, construction joints between old and new parts of concrete slabs are subjected to repeated traffic loads during placing and during of concrete. Therefore, the main goal of this paper is given to investigate the variation of the shear strength of widening deck. As a result, the occurrence of cracks in vibrating specimen is faster than that of non-vibrating one, and most of cracks are occurred at new concrete. And the difference of shear strength in vibrating specimen is larger than non-vibrating one, but the difference is negligible. Also, it shows the same result about direct and non-shrinkage joint specimen test.
Structural safety evaluation for static strength of thin plate RC member with high strength concrete is conducted in this study. Static strengths were predicted and compared with the experimental values. Predicted values were calculated by the evaluation formula based on the punching shear behavior and the yield line theory which can appear in the plate members. Static load tests were carried out for the specimens with high strength concrete and the test results were compared with the required performance in design. The comparison results show that the specimens with high strength concrete have sufficient structural safety for flexural and punching shear performance required in design. High strength concrete specimens exhibited excellent strength despite their small thickness. The range of concrete strengths applied in this study was about 60 MPa to 100 MPa.

Corrugated steel-concrete composite deck with I-beam welded is lighter and has higher load carrying capacity than RC slabs due to an I-beam embedded in the corrugated deck. The methods suggested from ACI and design standard of roadway bridge are used to evaluate effective moment inertia of RC structures. This paper presents evaluation and application of effective moment inertia for corrugated steel-concrete composite deck with I-beam welded by using the methods suggested from design standard of roadway bridge, ACI and CEB-FIP MC-90. In order to evaluate effective moment inertia, a series of flexural experiments were carried out. Five beams were built and the parameters considered in the experiments were studs, shape of the sections and connections of the beams. By using the aforementioned methods, effective moments of inertia was calculated and they were compared with the experimental results. As a result, The method suggested from CEB-FIP MC-90 yielded more satisfactory agreement than that from ACI. It was found that the beam has studs showed high load-carrying capacity and high effective moment of inertia.

RC slab bridges account for the largest portion of deteriorated bridges in Korea. However, most RC slabs are not included in the first and second classes of bridges, which are subject to bridge safety management and maintenance. The highest damaged components in highway bridges are the subsidiary facilities including expansion joints and bearings. In particular, leakage through expansion joints causes deterioration and cracks of concrete and exposure of reinforced bars. Therefore, this study analyzed the effect of adhesion damage at expansion joints on the response of the deck in RC slab bridges. When the spacing between the expansion joints at both ends was closely adhered, cracks occurred in the concrete at both ends of the deck due to the resistance rigidity at the expansion joints. Based on the response results, the correlation analysis between displacements in the longitudinal direction of the expansion joint and concrete stress at both ends of the deck for each damage scenario was performed to investigate the effect of the occurrence of damage on the bridge behavior. When expansion joint devices at both sides were damaged, the correlation between displacement and stress showed a low correlation of 0.18 when the vehicles proceeded along all the lanes. Compared with those in the intact state, the deflections of the deck in the damaged case at both sides showed a low correlation of 0.34 to 0.53 while the vehicle passed and 0.17 to 0.43 after the vehicle passed. This means that the occurrence of cracks in the ends of concrete changed the behavior of the deck. Therefore, data-deriven damage detection could be developed to manage the damage to expansion joints that cause damage and deterioration of the deck.

The purpose of this study makes a retrofit and rehabilitation practice trough the analysis and the improvement for the underlying problem of current retrofit and rehabilitation methods. Therefore, the deterioration process, the damage cause, the condition classification, the fatigue mechanism and the applied quantity of strengthening methods for RC deck slabs were analyzed. Artificial neural networks are efficient computing techniques that are widely used to solve complex problems in many fields. In this study, a back-propagation neural network model for estimating a management on existing reinforced concrete bridge decks from damage cause, damage type, and integrity assessment at the initial stage is need. The training and testing of the network were based on a database of 36. Four different network models were used to study the ability of the neural network to predict the desirable output of increasing degree of accuracy. The neural networks is trained by modifying the weights of the neurons in response to the errors between the actual output values and the target output value. Training was done iteratively until the average sum squared errors over all the training patterns were minimized. This generally occurred after about 5,000 cycles of training.

The attributes related to the health condition of RC deck slabs are analyzed to help us identify and rate the safety level of the bridges in this study. According to the related reports the state assessment for the outward aspects of bridges is the important and critical part for rating the overall structural safety. In this respect, the careful identification for the various state attributes make the field inspection and structural diagnosis very effective. This study analyzes the influence of the state attributes on evaluation classes and the relationship of them by the inductive reasoning, which raise the understanding and performance for evaluation work, and support the logical approach for the state assessment. ID3 algorithm applied to the case set which is constructed from the field reports indicates the main attributes and the precedence governing the assessment, and derives the decision hierarchy for the state assessment.
