  • In this study, a numerical approach for evaluating the resisting capacity of a partial concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) column is introduced. By strengthening the plastic hinge part of a traditional reinforced concrete column with a steel tube, a partial CFST shows a similar bending moment capacity as that of a full CFST column but with reduced material cost. To conduct an elaborate numerical analysis of a partial CFST column, an improved bond-slip model is applied to a finite element (FE) model at the interface between the steel tube and in-filled concrete. This numerical model is verified through the results of a double curvature bending-compression test. A parametric study with the proposed numerical model is used to obtain the load moment interaction diagrams for evaluating the resisting capacity based on various dimensions. Finally, the required strengthening length is estimated for each degree of thickness of the steel tube, and the failure mechanism of the partial CFST column based on the dimensions of the steel tube are identified.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the strength and ductility improvement of columns retrofitted by steel-fiber composite plate. Test specimens strengthened by three different materials - steel plate(SP), carbon fiber sheet(CF) and fiber-steel composite plate(CP) - were tested under cyclic lateral load with a constant axial load equal to $20\%$ of the axial compression capacity. The structural capacity of composite plate was good or better than that of other retrofitting materials. Test results from all retrofitted specimens showed that considerably higher retrofitting amount was required for strength enhancement. The ductility of retrofitted columns by composite plate was fairly improved. Also, energy ductility ratio was more effective than displacement ductility ratio for ductility estimation of retrofitted column.

  • Recently, Construction Business, is changing very quickly, exceedingly needs to slim down the construction expensive by reducing material costs and the term of works. The term of formwork takes 25% of the term of works and costs 15% to 20% of the cost of construction. Hereupon, the purpose of this study is to investigate the Axial Strength of Centrifugall Formed Shell PC Columns that can reduce the term of formwork, the costs of material, the difficulty of throwing away the waste. Shell PC Column is loaded stirrups and manufactured at factory, so it has good points like construction's quality control and part's precision. However, it needs to be tested for checking bonded ability because it is set up at core and coverd with concrete. therefore this study is necessary three type of columns, which are a RC column, different type of two compressive strength core concrete columns and a Shell PC Column. By three columns, this study compare with and analysis three columns's bonded and Compressive Behavior abilities.

  • In this study, experimental research was carried out to evaluate steel reinforced ECC (Engineered Cementitious Composites) column, which exhibits excellent crack control property and highly ductile behavior. Ordinary portland cement and high volume fly ash were used as binding materials in the mixture proportions for the purpose of achieving a high level of multiple cracking property with the tightly controlled crack width. To compare with the cyclic behavior of steel reinforced ECC column specimen, a conventional reinforced concrete column was prepared and tested under reversed cyclic loading condition. Based on the cyclic load test, ECC column exhibited higher cyclic behavior, compared to the conventional RC column, in terms of load carrying capacity and energy dissipation capacity.

  • This paper proposes a method to predict the ductility capacity of reinforced concrete beam-column joints failing in shear after the formations of plastic hinges at both ends of the adjacent beams. The current design code divides joints into two categories: Type 1 for structures in non seismically hazard area and Type 2 in seismically hazard area. While there are many researches related to joint shear strength in Type 1, those in regard to joint ductility capacity of Type 2 are scarce. This paper classified the ductility capacity of beam-column joints into column, joint panel, and beam deformability. Since a brittle failure such as shear or bond failure in the columns must be avoided, column deformability was calculated by elastic analysis. The plastic hinges of the adjacent beams affect joint deformability. Therefore, the prediction of joint deformability was calculated with consideration to the degradation of the diagonally compressed concrete due to the strain penetration.

  • This study proposed a seismic reinforcement of RC columns with non-seismic details, a fiber reinforcement method of aramid sheets and MLCP (high elasticity aromatic polyester fiber material) with different characteristics, and 4 full-size column specimens and conducted experiments. The results show that a non-seismic specimen (RC-Orig) rapidly lost its load-bearing capacity after reaching the maximum load, and shear failure occurred. The RC column reinforced with three types of aramid did not show an apparent increase in strength compared to the unreinforced specimen but showed a ductile behavior supporting the load while receiving a lateral displacement at least 1.57 to 1.95 times higher than the unreinforced specimen. The fracture mode of the specimen, according to the application of lateral load, also changed from shear to ductile fracture through aramid-based reinforcement. In addition, when examining the energy dissipation ability of the reinforced specimens, a ductile behavior dissipating seismic energy performed 4 times greater and more stably than the existing specimens.

  • The objective of the present study is to evaluate the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete columns externally strengthened with wire rope and T-shape steel plate units. Three strengened columns and a control unstrengthened column were tested under cyclic lateral load simultaneously subjected to a constant axial load. All columns had same section size, and the arrangement of longitudinal reinforcement and internal hoop. The spacing of wire rope range from 40 ${\sim}$ 80mm, which corresponds from 1.0 ${\sim}$ 0.5, respectively, times the minium amount of hoop specified in seismic design of ACI 318-05. Test results showed that the proposed unbonded-type strengthening procedure is very effective for improving the flexural ductility of reinforced concrete columns.

  • This study summarizes the results of a research project aimed at investigating the inelastic rotation capacity of beam-column connections of reinforced concrete moment frames. A total of 91 test specimens for beam-column joint connections were examined in detail, and 28 specimens were classified as special moment frame connections based on the design and detailing requirements in the ACI 318-02 Provisions. Then the acceptance criteria, originally defined for steel moment frame connections in the AISC-02 Seismic Provisions, were used to evaluate the joint connections of concrete moment frames. Twenty-seven out of 28 test specimens that satisfy the design requirements for special moment frame structures provide sufficient strength and are ductile up to a plastic rotation of 0.03 rad. without any major degradation in strength. Joint shear stress, column-to-beam flexural strength ratio, and transverse reinforcement ratio in a joint all play a key role in good performance of the connections.

  • Since the structure systems of construction projects have been forced to be large, high-rised, and complex, many researchers have been put their efforts to develop high strength concrete incorporating diverse advanced materials. In order to improve the performance of the concrete, the fibers leading high ductility to concrete have been used, consequently concrete columns adopting High-Performance Fiber Cement(HPFC) have been developed. This paper analyzed not only the construction work process of HPFC column installed to the real construction project, but also construction productivity of the columns by using discrete event simulation technique. As a result, several considerations on installing such a column have identified, compared with the works for typical concrete columns. In particular, there was specific characteristic to install the columns in terms of labor resource productivity, which is not shown with the work for the typical concrete columns.
