  • An infernally confined hollow reinforced concrete pier (ICH RC pier) is hollow RC pier which has a internal steel tube to enhance its ductility and stiffness by internal confinement. In this study, the internal steel tube were changed to investigate the behavior of ICH RC pier. The behavior of internally confined hollow reinforced concrete piers were evaluated with safety ratio, ductility, total material cost, the total weight of the pier, etc. As a result of analytical study, the usage of a minimum necessary thickness of the internal steel tube the most effective. The ICH RC pier has decrease of weight compare to Solid RC pier.

  • In the present study the behavior of fire and the residual strength of fire-ignited RC slabs are investigated by experimental tests and numerical simulations. The fire tests of RC slabs were carried out in a furnace using the ISO 834 standard fire. The load capacity of the cooled RC slabs that were not loaded during the fire tests was evaluated by additional 3 point bending tests. The influence of the proportion of PP (polypropylene) fibers in the RC slabs on the structural behavior of the RC slabs after the fire loading was investigated. The results of the fire tests showed that the maximum temperature of concrete with PP fiber was lower than that of concrete without PP fiber. As the concrete was heated, the ultimate compressive strength decreased and the ultimate strain increased. The load-deflection relations of RC slabs after fire loading were compared by using existing stress-strain-temperature models. The comparison between the numerical analysis and the experimental tests showed that some numerical analyses were reliable and therefore, can be applied to evaluate the ultimate load of RC slabs after fire loading. The ultimate load capacity after cooling down the RC slabs without PP fiber showed a considerable reduction from that of the RC slabs with PP fiber.

  • In this paper, an averaged constitutive model of concrete and reinforcing bars for RC structure and path-dependent Ohsaki's model for soil are applied, and an elasto-plastic interface model having thickness is preposed for seismic analysis of underground RC subway station structure. A finite element analysis technique is developed by applying aforementioned constitutive equations and verified through seismic analysis of underground RC subway station. Then, failure mechanisms of the RC subway station structure under seismic action are numerically derived. Then, failure modes and damage levels of the station are also analytically evaluated for the cases of several designs of the underground RC station.

  • In recent years, glassfibers have been used for strengthening in RC structure because of low material cost and easy repairing work. The purpose of this study is to experimentally and analytically investigate the effect of glassfibers for enhancing the capacity of RC flexural beams and shear beams. The experimental result shows that yield and ultimate strength of RC flexural beam with glassfibers are increased by approxiamate 13% and 26%, comparing with those for without glassfibers, and also ultimate strength of RC shear beam with glassfibers are increased by 34%, comparing with those for without glassfibers.

  • This paper focuses on the premature failure of RC beams bonded with FRP. A number of failure modes for RC beams bonded with FRP have been observed in numerous experimental studies during past decade. Particularly, Rip-off failure and Debonding failure were majority failure modes in RC beams bonded with FRP. Rip-off failure occurred at the plate end due to high interfacial shear and normal stresses however Debonding failure was caused by the yielding of reinforcing bar and the increasing of shear deformation in shear span. On the basis of premature failure mechanism in RC beams bonded with FRP, Basic strengthening length and Premature failure criteria were derived

  • In this study, an optimum design algorithm using efficient reanalysis is proposed for seismic design of RC Piers. The proposed algorithm for optimization of RC Piers is based on efficient reanalysis technique. Considering structural behavior of RC Piers, several other approximation techniques, such as artificial constraint deletion is introduced to increase the efficiency of optimization. The efficiency and robustness of the proposed algorithm increase the proposed reanalysis technique is demonstrated by comparing it with a conventional optimization algorithm. A few of design examples are optimized to show the applicability of the proposed algorithm.

  • A general active RC network synthesis procedure which realizes any stable transfer function is described. The network elements are only R's, C's and OA's, and the network configuration are well suited for construction using thin-film RC networks and integrated cil'suit operational amplifiers. Poles and transmission zeros can be adjusted independently to each other and are qu;te insensitive to element variations.

  • A seismic strengthening method using Velcro is proposed to improve the seismic performance of columns in RC frame structures. The proposed method was evaluated experimentally using three fabricated RC specimens. Velcro was wrapped around the columns of the RC-frame specimen to prevent concrete spall falling. The reinforcing performance of the Velcro was determined from comparison of results on seismic performance (i.e., strength, displacement, failure mode, displacement ductility capacity and amount of dissipated energy). As the displacement of the reinforced specimens was increased, the amount of dissipated energy increased drastically, and the displacement-ductility-capacity of the reinforced specimens also increased. The final failure mode of RC frame structure was changed. As a result, it was concluded that the proposed seismic strengthening method using Velcro could be used to increase the displacement ductility of RC columns, and could be used to change the final failure mode of RC-frame structures.

  • The fire resistance performance of 2 RC slabs after exposure to the ISO-834 fire standard without loading has been experimentally investigated. A Comparison is made of the fire resistance performance between RC slabs without PP(polypropylene) fibers and RC slabs with PP fibers. From the fire test results, the presence of PP fibers in RC slabs can reduce spalling and enhance their fire resistance. Until now, the determination of fire resistance of reinforced concrete(RC) slabs has essentially been based on tabulated data. According to ACI 216 code and EUROCODE 2, the design of concrete structures is essentially based on tabulated data for appropriate concrete cover and various fire durations. From the comparison between fire test results and codes, current fire design provisions of codes such as the ACI 216 and the EUROCODE 2 are unconservative for estimating mechanical properties of RC slabs at elevated temperatures.

  • The real situation of an underground reinforced concrete(RC) structure with the surrounding soil medium subjected to seismic load is quite difficult to be simulated through an expensive work and, even if it is possible to arrange such an experiment, it will be too expensive. So development of analytical method can be applied usefully to seismic design and seismic retrofit through an analysis of seismic behavior and seismic performance evaluation. A path-dependent constitutive model for soil that can estimate the response of soil layer is indispensible for dealing with kinematic interaction of RC/soil entire system under seismic loads. And interface model which deals with the dynamic interaction of RC/soil entire system is also necessary. In this study, finite element analysis program that can consider path-dependent behavior of RC and soil, and interfacial behavior between RC and soil is developed for rational seismic analysis of RC/soil entire system. Using this program, nonlinear behavior of interface between RC and soil is analyzed, and the effect of interfacial behavior to entire system is investigated.
