This study attempted to measure subcutaneous fat thickness by the use of ultrasonic wave in age and sex matched Korean subjects, and to observe correlation between fat thick-ness and physical indices. In male, fat thickness of suprailiac area showed the highest value of $9.40{\sim}9.51mm$ and then subscapular was $6.60{\sim}6.84mm$, femoral was $6.48{\sim}7.04mm$ and triceps regions was $3.48{\sim}3.69mm$. In female, femoral subcutaneous fat thickness was the higher. $11.85{\sim}12.15mm$and then suprailiac was $8.79{\sim}9.87mm$ subscapular was $6.20{\sim}6.91mm$ and triceps fat thickness was $4.80{\sim}4.93mm$. In male, fat thickness of triceps and relative body weight(RBW). body mass index(BMI), triceps or $R\ddot{o}hrer$ index were positively correlated. Correlations between suprailiac and weight, relative body weight(RBW). body mass index(BMT), $R\ddot{o}hrer$ index or subscapular were positively significant. In female. there were positive correlations between fat thickness of femoral and RBW, BMI, or $R\ddot{o}hrer$ index. And there were no positive correlations in other parts of the body.
A study was conducted to examine the effects of light quality on the growth and phytochemical contents of ice plant in a closed-type plant production system. Seeds were sown in a 128-cell plug tray using rockwool. The seedlings were then transplanted into a deep floating technique system with recirculating nutrient solution (EC $1.5dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$, pH 6.5) in a closed-type plant production system. The nutrient solution was supplied at two weeks after transplanting with 2.0 mM NaCl concentration in all treatments for the development of the bladder cells. The three light sources with different light qualities used were as followed; FL (fluorescent lamps), combined RW LED (red:white = 7:3), and combined RBW LED (red:blue:white = 8:1:1) at $150{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ PPFD with a photoperiod of 14/10 hours (light/dark). The results showed that the FL treatment had the greatest growth enhancement effects on the leaf area and the fresh and dry weights of the shoots and roots. The SPAD values were significantly higher under the FL and RBW LED treatments, at 29.8 and 30.6, respectively. No significant difference was observed in salinity under all treatments. Chlorophyll fluorescence was significantly higher under the FL treatment. The total phenol content and antioxidant activity were the highest under the RBW LED treatment. The total flavonoid content was significantly higher under the RBW LED and FL treatments. Hence, the results indicate that the growth of ice plant was maximized under the FL treatment. The phytochemical contents were maximized under the RBW LED treatment.
This study was performed in order to evaluate the antioxidant activities of red beet extracts as well as the physicochemical properties and microbial changes of pork patties containing red beet during refrigerated storage. Red beet was extracted with water and ethanol. Red beet water extracts (RBW) and red beet ethanol extracts (RBE) were diluted with various concentrations (0.05~1.0%). DPPH radical scavenging activity and iron chelation activity of RBW showed a higher level than those of RBE (p<0.05). In particular, the iron chelation activity of RBW was over 53.4% at all levels. In addition, RBW at 1% had nearly 100% activity. On the other hand, the reducing powers of RBE were higher than those of RBW (p<0.05), and the antioxidant activity on linoleic acid emulsion of RBW was over 83% at all levels. Based on these model studies, 0.5% levels of RBW and RBE were added to ground pork patties (GPP), and the physicochemical properties and microbial changes of red beet GPP were evaluated during storage (0~14 d) at $4^{\circ}C$. The pH and microbial counts increased with increased storage time (p<0.05). Pork patties with BHT showed the lowest thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and microbial counts, and those with red beet had lower TBARS than the control (p<0.05). These results indicated that both red beet water and ethanol extracts could be used as natural antioxidants of pork patties during storage.
This study was an attempt to compare the energy, nutrient intake, blood lipids, and body fat distribution of diabetics with those of normal control subjects. Daily energy and nutrient intake were measured by convenient method. The following anthropometric measurements were made on all participants : weight, height, and waist and hip circumference. We matched 31 pairs with diabetics and nondiabetic control subjects by sex, age, body weight and height, and made comparisons between two groups to observe the effect of diabetes in lipid profiles. Aslo the effect of exercise in diabetes was investigated. The results obtained were as follows : 1.The average of daily energy intake of diabetics was 1, 927 kcal and that of nondiabetics was 2, 159 kcal. Percentage of energy in diabetics is that carbohydrate : protein : fat = 69:13:18 2. When diabetics were divided into obese and nonobese group according to RBW, 33% of diabetics were obese and energy intake was not significantly different between the two groups, but VLDL - cholesterol concentration was significantly higher in the obese group. 3. Energy intake, BMI, RBW and total cholesterol level of upper obesity group were significantly higher than those of lower body obesity group in male diabetic subjects. 4. When matching 31 pairs of diabetics and nondiabetics according to sex, age, body weight and height triglyceride concentration and WHR of diabetics were measured to be significantly higher than those of nondiabetics. 5. Although energy intake was not significantly different between exercise and nonexercise groups, triglyceride, blood glucose, RBW, BMI were significantly lower in the exercise and nonexercise groups, triglyceride, blood glucose, RBW, BMI were significantly lower in the exercise group than the nonexercis group in diabetics. 6. BMI and RBW were not correlated with cholesterol or triglyceride, but WHR correlated significantly with both cholesterol and triglyceride. In conclusion, diabetics had higher triglyceride concentration and WHR than nondiabetics. WHR may be better than BMI or RBW for predicting alteration in lipid profile and exercise seems beneficial for controlling blood glucose and lipids in diabetics.

To investigate the effect of light sources on the growth and photosynthesis of the dwarf apple rootstock M.9 for the production of standard seedlings, the plants were cultivated in a controlled environment for 6 weeks. The sources of light are six treatments [Red (R), Blue (B), White (W), RBUV (R7B3 containing UV-A), RBW (R3B1W1), SMF (high pressure sodium + metal halide + fluorescent lamp) under $154{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$. Growth characteristics of apple seedlings varied depending on artificial light source at 3 weeks and 6 weeks. The plant height of apple seedling was high in the R, RBUV, RBW, and SMF light sources at 3 weeks, and in the R light at 6 weeks. There was no significant difference on stem diameter among the treatments at 3 weeks, but showed high in RBUV and RBW light at 6 weeks. Leaf number was the highest in RBUV light at 3 and 6 weeks. The chlorophyll content (SPAD value) was high in the B and RBUV light at 3 weeks, but it was not significant at 6 weeks. The growth rate to height of the R light (1.12mm/day) was the highest among the treatments, followed by RBUV, RBW, SMF, W and then B. Leaf area was the highest in RBUV and RBW lowest in B. Specific leaf area was high in W and fresh and dry weight were high in RBUV. The photosynthetic rate at 6 weeks was highest in the B and lowest in the R. Stomatal conductivity and transpiration rate were higher in the B and W compared to the other light sources. Therefore, we are considered that light sources for growth of dwarf apple rootstock M.9 seedlings are suitable the R, RBUV, and RBW light sources with a high mixing ratio of Red and Red +Blue.
This study was carried out to investigate the effects of artificial light sources on growth, yield, and glucosinolate content of hydoroponically grown Peucedanum japonicum in plant factory. Treatments were given with LED Blue:White(1:1, B:W), LED Red:Blue:White(2:1:3, RBW), and LED Blue:White(1:1)+Florescent lamp(BW+FL). Number of harvested leaves and leaf weight of BW+FL were higher than BW and RBW. BW+FL in leaf length and RBW in leaf width were significant difference with other treatments. Chlorophyll content and 'L' value were not significant difference among the treatments. The 'a' and 'b' value is the lowest in BW+FL. Glucosinolate content was high in order of glucobrassicin, glucoiberin, sinigrin, gluconasturtiin, progoitrin, glucoraphamin, and epiprogoitrin in all treatments, and total glucosinolate content was the highest in RBW treatment. Moisture, crude protein, crude fat, and ash content of leaves were not different among the treatments. In conclusion, this study showed that light caused growth and secondary metabolites synthesis, and we recommend to further study between light and secondary metabolites for increasing functionality.
This study was carried out to investigate the effects of artificial light sources on growth and yield of hydroponically grown Peucedanum japonicum in plant factory. Treatments were composed with; florescent lamp(FL) as control, and LED lights; R:B(2:1, RB), R:B:W(2:1:3, RBW), and R:B:G:W(2:1:0.5:3, RBGW). Plant height of RBGW and FL treatments were superior to RB and RBW. Leaf weight of RBW and RB were superior to FL and RBGW. There were no significant difference of leaf length and thickness among the treatments. Lightness of leaves was same tendency with plant height. Total phenolic compound content was the high in order of RB as $105.77mg{\cdot}100g^{-1}$ GE, RBW as $92.52mg{\cdot}100g^{-1}$ GE, FL as $89.08mg{\cdot}100g^{-1}$ GE, and RBGW $82.00mg{\cdot}100g^{-1}$ GE. Total flavonoids were not detected in all treatments. Vitamin C content was the highest in RB and the lowest in FL. Total dietary fiber were the highest in FL and the lowest in RBGW. There was no significant difference cystein and methionine contents among the treatments. Concludely, yield, total phenolic compounds, and vitamin C content was high in RBW and RB. We reached conclusion that RBW is best artificial light source considering yield, functionality and eye fatigability when work. We recommend to further study LED pulse and duty rates for increasing functionality.
As various metabolic alterations develope in uremic patients. their diets need to be restricted, Furthermore medical complications with accompanying anorexia result in further complications and decrease in body strength. To assess the nutritional status of hemodialyzed patients we performed evaluation for dietary intake and protein catabolic rate(PCR) For 24 clinically stable male patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis dietary intake was estimated by 3-day food record method and PCR was calculated with blood urea nitrogen at pre and post hemodialysis. The results were as follows : 1) Average daily energy and protein intake were 26.7$\pm$5.1kcal/kg of body weight. 0.95$\pm$0.19 g/kg of body weight respectively. 2) Protein catabolic rate calculated from interdialysis blood urea nitrogen levels was 1.00$\pm$0.20g/kg of body weight. Protein catabolic rate was correlated with the amount of Protein intake(r=0.44 p<0.05) 3) Relative body weight(RBW) of the subjects was smaller than that of healthy man without hemodialysis. Calorie and protein intake and protein catabolic rate were significantly different (p<0.05) between patients with lower RBW(<90% of ideal body weight) and those with normal RBW(90~110% of ideal body weight) and those with normal RBW(90~110% of iedal body weight) 4) The duration of hemodialysis did not have a significant effect on the nutritional status of the subjects.
The difference between self-evaluated obesity and obesity index of RBW and BMI as well as attitude toward weight control were studied among college students in Chungnam area. The subjects of 307 students were randomly selected and asked to categorize their body shape into 5 groups and to record their body weight and height. We found that average RBW and BMI of the students were 95.7% and 20.6, respectively. By RBW, 30.6% of students belonged to underweight and severe-underweight groups whereas 14.0% overweight and obesity ones. The female students showed lower obesity indice than the male. Self-evaluated obesity seemed likely to overestimate their body shapes above RBW and BMI, which lead to high unsatisfactioin toward their body shape. The overestimation was profound in normal weighted female students up to 20%. Misunderstanding about their obesity, especially among female college students, should be corrected necessarily by proper nutrition counseling and nutrition education, unless malnutrition could be serious in college students.
This study was to investigate the level of serum lipids and obesity in housewives in Mooan, and relationships between them. The average age, height and weight were 51.1 years, 154.3cm and 58.3kg respectively. The level of obesity of subjects was higher than that of housewives in other areas investigated in other studies. BMI and RBW underestimated in the obese compared to BIA. The amounts of lean body mass and total body water of subjects above 60 years old were smaller than those of forties and their BMI and RBW were lower than those of forties. However, their body fat percentage was nearly same as that of forties. Serum HDL-cholesterol(HDL-C) of subjects was lower than 55mg/㎗, the lower limit of normal range. Triglyceride of subjects above 60years old was higher than the 95th percentile of those of the same age with reference to Mayo clinic. The serum total cholesterol(TC) showed positive correlation with LDL-cholesterol(LDL-C) and TC/HDL-C(p<0.001). LDL-C showed positive correlation with TC(p<0.001), but negative correlation with HDL-C(p<0.05). HDL-C showed negative correlation with triglyceride(p<0.05). TC/HDL-C showed a positive correlation with triglyceride(p<0.05). HDL-C was the serum lipid which showed the highest correlation with obesity and body composition. It showed a negative correlation with the percentage of body fat(p<0.001), total body fat(p<0.001), BMI(p< 0.05) and RBW(p<0.05). TC/HDL-C showed positive correlation with the percentage of body fat(p<0.01) and total body fat(p<0.05). As the result of above, it is needed to make more researches to find out the proper method to estimate the obesity of subjects and educate subjects in Mooan about nutritional information for obesity.
