Herpetofauna biodiversity was surveyed at the Chin-do. The results are as follows: During census periods presence of 2 orders, 4 families, 6 species of amphibians and 1 order, 2 suborders, 4 families, 8 species of reptiles were observed or found indirectly by auditorial recording from residents at the Chin-do. Among them 1 protected wildlife(Agkistrodon saxatilis) and several rare species such as Takydromus wolteri, Sciucella laterale laterale and Zamenis spinalis were indentified. Rana nigromaculata and Rana catesbeiana were found in all surveyed areas. Dominant amphibian species was Rana rugosa (D'= 25.8%) and reptile was Takydromus wolteri (D'= 21.8%). Among 4 areas survey area, Uisin-myon showed the highest level of species richness, diversity, and evenness indices (R'= 2.393, H'= 1.931, and E'= 0.7772, respectively). The species richness of Kunnae-myon was lower (R'= 0.932) than other surveyed regions. Based on the frequency of occurrence (85.71%), habitation density of Rana catesbeiana was very common in Chin-do, suggesting that spreading of this foreign species in the entire Korean peninsula. Scincella laterale laterale, Elaphe dione, Elaphe rufodorsata, Dinodon rufozonatus rufozonatus, Rhabdophis tigrinus tigrinus, Agkistrodon ussuriensis, and Zamenis spinalis showed low frequency of occurrence ( < 10%) and efforts to protect them are required. This study is attempted to prepare criteria to determine target species for conservation, through analyzing vascular flora and medicinal resources plants of Mt. Daedeok and Geumdae-bong in Gangwon Province, Korea. Flora Surveys were conducted 14 times from April, 2017 to October, 2019. Total 428 taxa with 83 families, 245 genera, 356 species, 5 subspecies, 46 varieties and 21 forms were distributed in Mt. Daedeok and Geumdae-bong. Korean endemic species were composed of 19 species. Total 36 taxa of Korean rare plants species were identified including 5 taxa in the degree of CR, 2 taxa in the degree of EN, 12 taxa in the degree of VU, 14 taxa in the degree of LC and 3 taxa in the degree of DD. The naturalized plants were 5 families, 10 genera, 10 species, totaling 10 taxa and medicinal resources plants were 239 taxa with 73 families, 185 genera, 239 species, 30 varieties 4 forms, 4 subspecies. The Urbanization Index (UI) was 2.5% and the Naturalized Index (NI) was 1.9%.
Recently, by fast industralization and development without environmental concern, our environment deterioration have being continued rapidly. Therefore, many species is placed on crisis of extinction or was already extincted by habitat destruction. In Minjujisan area, there is a plan to construct the Sport and Leisure Complex by which convert the forest conservancy district to the district of development promotion and district of sighseeing and leisure by Yongdong District. To investigate the avifauna impacts by habitat destruction, bird censuses was carried out before the Sport and Leisure Complex be construct in Minjujisan and Sokgisan area during 4-5 May, 1992 and 16-21 June, 1992. Total 229 birds of 41 species in 23 family of 9 orders were recorded during censuses. Sitta europaea amurensis was the most abundant species and Parus ater amurensis, Phylloscopus borealis xanthodryas, Parus major wladiwostokensis, Parus palustris hellmayri, and Turdus pallidus were dominant species. Accipiter nisus nisosimilis, Accipiter soloenis, and Otus scops stictonotus were found out to the natural monuments in this suvey. Halcyon pileate was observed to a rare bird in this surveyed area. Species diversity of this census was 3.381 which showed slightly higher degree than other surveyed area. The area of Minjujisan, Sokgipong, and Samdopong which have little pollution agent around there and kept away from mankind were approved the heavy avifauna area which have so many bird species. Biogeographically, the Taebaek Mountains was connected with the Sobaek Mountains through this area, therefore it was significant that many animal species could be move to each mountains ranges. The construction plan of the Sport and Leisure Complex in Minjujisan area should be restrain with concern about environmentally destruction by the Muju Resort in Dokyusan National Park which connected to that area have master plan to development the ski slopes for the 1997 Universiad with permission by the Ministry of Environment.
The objectives of this research were to develop fish-habitat relationship models which can be used to estimate fish species riclmess of small and medium rivers in Korea, and test the accuracy of the models. The models are based on the Aquatic GAP Analysis model in the New York Cooperative Fish & Wildlife Research Unit (19%), and they employ three habitat factors; river size, physical habitat, and water quality of each river segment. Model 1 and model II are based on the water quality standard for life support of EP A and the water quality class of Korea, respectively. Test sites for this study include one urban stream and three less spoiled tributaries of the Han River. The results of this research can be summarized as follows. First, the number of habitat types identified by model I and model II are nine and 14, respectively. Second, the average accuracy of the three distribution maps of rare or endangered fish species are 80.6% (model 1) and 81.2% (model II). Third, the accuracy of fish species richness are 94% (model 1) and 95% (model II), and the water quality is the most important factor affecting fish species richness. Fourth, the accuracy of fish species list are 50.5% (model 1) and 68.7% (model II), but the accuracy of less spoiled stream segments and that of polluted stream segments are 67.1% and 86.5%, respectively. Finally, it can be concluded that the overall performance of model II is better than that of model I at our test sites.
The ichthyofauna and the structure of fish community were surveyed from August 1995 to October 1997 at twenty one stations in the Wicheon river which is a first tributary located at the middle reach of the Nakdong river system. During the surveyed period, 40 species belonging to ten families were collected. Of them cyprinid fish occupied 65.0% (26 species) and cobitid fish 12.5% (5 species). Sixteen species (40.0%) were known as Korean endemic species. Dominant species were Zacco temmincki (15.35%), Zacco platypus (14.12%), and Squalidus gracilis majimae (11.32%). Rare species which occupied less than 0.1% of total individuals were Cyprinus carpio, Culter brevicauda, Misgurnus mizoiepis, Cobitis rotundicaudata, Leiocassis ussuriensis, Silurus asotus, Macropodus chinensis, and Channa argus. A tendancy were shown in regional distribution that Moroco oxycephalus dominated in upper stream, Zacco temmincki, Squalidus gracilis majimae, and Niwaella multifasciata in mid - upper stream, acheilognathid fishes and Zacco temmincki in mid - lower stream, and Zacco platypus and microphysogobioid fishes in lower stream. St. 9, 10, and 11 which located in mid - reach of main stream and St. 17, 18 and 19 which located in mid - reach of the Ssanggye stream had the most stable and diverse community structure.
The flora of vascular plants in the Geumgang area (Mt. Guryongsan, Mt. Jeonwolsan, Mt. Samasan, Mt. Yongmeorisan and Mt. Hamrasan) was investigated to suggest strategies for conservation. This study was performed from May 2007 to April 2008, with total 17 times. The Korean endemic species, legally protected species and species to threaten domestic ecosystem species to threaten were grasped on this study. The flora consists of 334 taxa, 86 families 246 genera 297 species 34 varieies and 3 forms in total results from 5 sites in this study. Korean endemic species were confirmed 8 taxa. No rare and endangered species were found in this study. The 2 taxa of the fourth grade of specially designated plants announced the Ministry of Environment were investigated and 8 taxa of the third grade were confirmed. In totally, 24 taxa that are specially designated plants announced the Ministry of Environment including the first and the second grade taxa. 25 taxa of alien naturalized plants were confirmed. The degree of destroy of forest vegetation and reduction of plant diversity in the midstream of Geumgang were in proceeding by construction of multifunctional administrative city and cultivation. It is needed to set up strategies for conservation forest vegetation in this study area.
The habitats characteristics of Polypodium vulgare L. in Ulleung-do were investigated to compile basic data for conservation and restoration. Natural habitats were located at altitudes of 410~748m with inclinations of $12{\sim}80^{\circ}$. Sixty six vascular plants were identified from 10 quadrats in 4 habitats. Dominant species among the woody plants, based on importance value, were Acer pictum subsp. mono(49.52%) in the tree (T1) layer, Sorbus amurensis(28.99%) in the subtree (T2) and Schizophragma hydrangeoides(51.99%), Ligustrum foliosum(8.82%), Fagus engleriana(7.25%) in the shrub (S) layer. Importance value for members of the herb (H) layer were as follows: Polypodium vulgare 23.23%; Maianthemum dilatatum 9.65%; Phryma leptostachya var. asiatica 9.23%; Dryopteris crassirhizoma 8.40%; Carex shimidzensis 6.75% and Dystaenia takesimana 5.42%. The importance value of the last five species were high, so they were at affinity with Polypodium vulgare in their habitats. Species diversity was 1.18, and dominance and evenness were found to be 0.11 and 0.84, respectively. The soil types were sandy loam. Average field capacity was 30.42%, and the organic matter and pH were 17.95%, and 4.70. Correlation coefficients based on environmental factors, vegetation and soil analysis were showed that positive correlations between species diversity and species richness, whereas between species diversity and dominance, coverage of Polypodium vulgare and species richness were showed negative correlations.
To identify the flora of the vascular plants in the Anmyeon Island, field surveys were conducted from June, 2015 to August, 2016. Based on the collected specimens, the vascular plants of the Anmyeon Island were summarized as 717 taxa: 119 families, 400 genera, 632 species, 5 subspecies, 73 varieties and 7 formas. Among the 717 identified taxa, 17 rare plants designated by the Koren Forest Service according to the IUCN valuation species were described: 3 taxa of critically endangered species (CR), 1 taxa of endangered species (EN), 6 taxa of least concerned species (LC), 7 taxa of vulnerable species (VU). 99 taxa of floristic regional indicator plants specially designated by Ministry of Environment also were identified. In addition, 6 Korean endemic species such as Forsythia koreana Nakai and Hemerocallis taeanensis S.S.Kang & M.G.Chung, and 91 naturalized plants such as Rumex acetocella L., Amaranthus lividus L. and Diodia teres Walter etc. were described.
This study was conducted to elucidate the patterns of occurrence of bark beetles on deadwoods of Quercus serrata Fisher and Carpinus laxiflora Blume which are expected to increase due to climate change. The survey was carried out at the LTER site in Gwangneung forest in Gyeonggi Province in 2007-2008. Bark beetles were collected using emergence traps and attraction traps (funnel trap and window trap). A total of 408 beetles belonging to 12 species in two subfamilies were collected. Platypus koryoensis (Murayama) was the most abundant species. P. koryoensis and Xylosandrus germanus (Blandford) occurred mainly in deadwoods of Q. serrata. All other species, except two rare species, occurred commonly in deadwood of both tree species. Species richness and abundance of bark beetles were higher in the attraction traps than in the emergence traps, and higher in Q. serrata than in C. laxiflora. These indexes were higher in classes I-II or I-III than in classes III-IV or IV of deadwood. Bark beetle communities differed according to years and showed a little difference between tree species.

Cypripedium is an orchid genus of over 50 species widely distributed in the northern temperate zone, with a few taxa extending central America and the Himalayas and the southwesternmost tip of China in Asia. Of the known species approximately two thirds are found in China. In Korea, 4 species were reported to find with rare popularity ; C. macranthos, C. guttatum, C. japonicum, and C. calceolus. The seed has a firm brown fusiform testa with an opening at one end where the micropyle of the ovule was situated. Cypripedium has small, fusiform, wind-dispersed seeds that weigh about $1{\sim}2{\mu}g$ and range from 0.1 to 2 mm long and 0.07 to 0.4 mm across. The germination of Cypripedium was previously thought to be hard to cultivate in one's garden and impossible to propagate artificially, nowadays lab-propagated seedlings are readily available in EU or United States. We had already reported the successful micropropagation of lady's slipper orchids with green pod sowing methods. The collected Cypripedium species and hybrids were planted in Korea National Arboretum (KNA) on Oct. 2018. The 11 species including C. candidum and the 31 hybrids such as C. Ingrid were introduced from Germany with CITES certification. The lady's slipper orchids bloomed on May to June, and the flowers were pollinated in the same species or hybrids to get seeds for in vitro germination on 2~3 days after fully flowering. The green pods were collected after 49~70 days after pollination. The 6 species of Cypripedium seeds were easily germinated on the POM within 70 days after sowing, and the 12 hybrids PLBs were observed with small roots. We had established the scheme of lady's slipper orchids germination in 3 months with green pods, and get the possibility of seedling in 10 months of sowing in vitro.
