The present study has been motivated by the development of a reliable numerical methodology for simulation of kerosene/LOx coaxial swirl injectors. To deal with thermodynamic non-ideality and anomalies of transport properties pronounced at supercritical pressures, a set of subroutine libraries has been constructed based on the cubic equations of state, and applied to an existing flamelet analysis code. For computational efficiency, two-dimensional axisymmetric RANS formulation with swirl was adopted and validated successfully against an isothermal coaxial swirling jet. For the actual problem with high pressure combustion, however, numerical results show that the RANS models yield excessive production of turbulence probably due to high density gradient magnitude in the vicinity of mixing layer of swirling film flow, and imply strongly further improvement of the turbulence models.

The finite volume based multi-block RANS code, WAVIS developed at MOERI is applied to the numerical self-propulsion test. WAVIS uses the cell-centered finite volume method for discretization of the governing equations. The realizable $k-{\epsilon}$ turbulence model with a wall function is employed for the turbulence closure. The free surface is captured with the two-phase level set method and body forces are used to model the effects of a propeller without resolving the detail blade flow. The propeller forces are obtained using an unsteady lifting surface method based on potential flow theory. The numerical procedure followed the self-propulsion model experiment based on the 1978 ITTC performance prediction method. The self-propulsion point is obtained iteratively through balancing the propeller thrust, the ship hull resistance and towing force that is correction for Reynolds number difference between the model and full scale. The unsteady lifting surface code is also iterated until the propeller induced velocity is converged in order to obtain the propeller force. The self-propulsion characteristics such as thrust deduction, wake fraction, propeller efficiency, and hull efficiency are compared with the experimental data of the practical container ship. The present paper shows that hybrid RANS and potential flow based numerical method is promising to predict the self-propulsion parameters of practical ships as a useful tool for the hull form and propeller design.

We used a numerical method to estimate the hydrodynamic maneuvering derivatives for the heave-pitch coupling motion of an underwater glider. It is very important to assess the hydrodynamic maneuvering characteristics of a specific hull form of an underwater glider in the initial design stages. Although model tests are the best way to obtain the derivatives, numerical methods such as the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) method are used to save time and cost. The RANS method is widely used to estimate the maneuvering performance of surface-piercing marine vehicles, such as tankers and container ships. However, it is rarely applied to evaluate the maneuvering performance of underwater vehicles such as gliders. This paper presents numerical studies for typical experiments such as static drift and Planar Motion Mechanism (PMM) to estimate the hydrodynamic maneuvering derivatives for a Ray-type Underwater Glider (RUG). A validation study was first performed on a manta-type Unmanned Undersea Vehicle (UUV), and the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) results were compared with a model test that was conducted at the Circular Water Channel (CWC) in Korea Maritime and Ocean University. Two different RANS solvers were used (Star-CCM+ and OpenFOAM), and the results were compared. The RUG's derivatives with both static drift and dynamic PMM (pure heave and pure pitch) are presented.
The Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) analysis of the 3-D steady flow around the NREL Phase VI horizontal axis wind turbine(HAWT) rotor was performed. The CFD analysis results were compared with experimental data at several different wind speeds. The present CFD model shows good agreements with the experiments both at low wind speed which formed well-attache flow mostly on the upper surface of the blade, and at high wind speed which blade surface flow completely separated. However, some discrepancy occurs at the relatively high wind speeds where mixed attached and separated flow formed on the suction surface of the blade. It seems that the discrepancy is related to the onset of stall phenomena and consequently separation prediction capability of the current turbulence model. It is also found that strong span-wise flow occurs in stalled area due to the centrifugal force generated by rotation of the turbine rotor and it prevents abrupt reduction of normal force for higher wind speed than the designed value.
The existing code which solves two-dimensional RANS(Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) equations and 2-equation turbulence model equations was modified to enable numerical simulation of various supersonic flows. For this, various boundary conditions have been implemented to the code. Bleed boundary condition was incorporated into the code for calculating wall mean flow quantities. Furthermore, the boundary conditions for the turbulence quantities along rough surfaces as well as porous walls were applied to the code. The code was verified and validated by comparing the computational results against the experimental data for the supersonic flows over bleed region on a flat plate. Using the newly modified code, numerical simulations were performed and compared with other computational results as well as the experimental data for the supersonic flows over an oblique shock with a bleed region.
Viscous flow around an actual ship is calculated by an use of RANS(Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes) solver. Reynolds stress is modelled by using k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model and the law of wall is applied near the body. Body fitted coordinates are introduced for the treatment of the complex boundary of the ship hull form. The transformed equations in the computational domain are numerically solved by an employment of FVM(Finite Volume Method). SIMPLE(Semi-Implcit Pressure Linked Equation) method is adopted in the calculation of pressure and the solution of the disssssssscretized equation is obtained by the line-by-line method with the use of TDMA(Tri-Diagonal Matrix Algorithme). The subject ship model of actual calculation is 4,410 TEU class container carrier. For 4 geosim models the calculated viscous resistancce values are compared with the model test results and analyzed on their componentss. The resistance performance of an actual ship is predicted very resonably, so this mothod may be utilized as a design tool of hull form.
It is important to predict the hydrodynamic maneuvering derivatives, which consist of the forces and moment acting on a hull during a maneuvering motion, when estimating the maneuverability of a ship. The estimation of the maneuverability of a ship with a change in the stern hull form is often performed at the initial design stage. In this situation, a method that can reflect the change in the hull form is necessary in the prediction of the maneuverability of the ship. In particular, the linear hydrodynamics maneuvering derivatives affect the yaw checking motion as the key factors. In the present study, static drift calculations were performed using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) based on Reynolds Average Navier-Stokes (RANS) for a 40-segment hull. A prediction method for the linear hydrodynamic maneuvering derivatives was proposed using the slender body theory from the distribution of the lateral force acting on each segment of the hull. Moreover, the results of a comparison study to the model experiment for KVLCC1 performed by KRISO are presented in order to verify the accuracy of the static drift calculation. Finally, the linear hydrodynamic maneuvering derivatives obtained from both the model test and calculation are compared and presented to verity the usefulness of the method proposed in this study.
It has been highly demanded to improve the accuracy of CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) methods for the assessment of the hydrodynamic performance of marine propellers in cavitating and non-cavitating flows. This paper presents a validation study on the numerical simulation of the tip vortex flow of a non-cavitating marine propeller SVA VP1304. The calculations are carried out by using the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) approach, where the Reynolds Stress Model(RSM) is used for turbulence closure. The present paper contains a grid dependence test for the propeller open water simulations and a special emphasis is placed on conducting a local grid adaptation on the blade tip and in the tip vortex to reasonably reproduce the velocity and the pressure in the tip vortex flow field. The numerical results are compared with the experimental validation data, which are published in the second International Symposium on Marine Propulsors 2011(SMP'11). The present numerical results show a reasonable agreement with the experiments.
Flow fields in a half ducted propeller fan have been investigated by three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations and a vortex core identification technique. The simulation at the design operating condition shows that the tip vortex onset point is located at 30 percent tip chord of the suction surface on the blade tip. There is no interaction between the tip vortex and the adjacent blade, so that the tip vortex smoothly convects to the rotor exit. However, the high vorticity in the tip vortex causes the wake and the tip leakage flow to be twined around the tip vortex and to interact with the pressure surface of the adjacent blade. This flow behavior corresponds well with experimental results by Laser Doppler Velocimetry. On the contrary, the simulation at the low-flowrate operating condition shows that the tip vortex onset point is located at the 60 percent tip chord of the suction surface. In contrast to the design operating condition, the tip vortex grows almost tangential direction, and impinges directly on the pressure surface of the adjacent blade.
The heat transfer and pressure loss characteristics of a rotating two-pass channel with a guide vane in the turning region have been studied using three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) analysis, and the shape of the guide vane has been optimized using surrogate modeling optimization technique. For the optimization, thickness, location and angle of the guide vanes have been selected as design variables. The objective function has been defined as a linear combination of the heat transfer and the friction loss related terms with a weighting factor. Latin hypercube sampling has been applied to determine the design points as design of experiments. A weighted-average surrogate model, PBA has been used as the surrogate model. The guide vane in the turning region does not influence the heat transfer in the first passage upstream of the turning region, but enhances largely the heat transfer in the turning region and the second passage. In an example of the optimization, the objective function has been increased by 13.6%.
