Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) models are extensively employed in industrial settings for the purpose of simulating intricate fluid flows. However, these models are subject to certain limitations. Notably, disparities persist in the Reynolds stresses when comparing the RANS model with high-fidelity data obtained from Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) or experimental measurements. In this work we propose an approach to mitigate these discrepancies while retaining the favorable attributes of the Menter Shear Stress Transport (SST) model, such as its significantly lower computational expense compared to DNS simulations. This strategy entails incorporating an explicit algebraic model and employing a neural network to correct the turbulent characteristic time. The imposition of realizability constraints is investigated through the introduction of penalization terms. The assimilated Reynolds stress model demonstrates good predictive performance in both in-sample and out-of-sample flow configurations. This suggests that the model can effectively capture the turbulent characteristics of the flow and produce physically realistic predictions.

The finite volume based multi-block RANS code, WAVIS developed at KRISO, is used to simulate the turbulent flow field around the KRISO container ship (KCS) and the modified KRISO tanker (KVLCC2M). The realizable k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model with a wall function is employed for the turbulence closure. The free surface flow with and without propeller is mainly investigated for the KCS and the double model flow is concerned for the KVLCC2M which is obliquely towed in still water. The computed results are compared with the experimental data provided by CFD Tokyo Workshop 2005 in terms of wave profiles, hull surface pressure and wake distribution with and without propeller for the HCS and wake distribution and hydrodynamic forces and moments with various drift angles for the KVLCC2M.

Application of the LeMoS hybrid (LH) URANS/LES method for the wake parameters prediction is considered. The wake fraction coefficient is calculated for inland ship model M1926 under shallow water conditions and compared to results of PIV measurements. It was shown that due to lack of the resolved turbulence at the interface between LES and RANS zones the artificial grid induced separations can occur. In order to overcome this drawback, a shielding function is introduced into LH model. The new version of the model is compared to the original one, RANS $k-{\omega}$ SST and SST-IDDES models. It is demonstrated that the proposed modification is robust and capable of wake prediction with satisfactory accuracy.
Large eddy simulation(LES) methodology used to model isothermal non-swirling and swirling flows in a model gas turbine combustor. The LES solver was implemented on parallel computer consisting 16 processors. To verify the capability of LES code and characterize swirling flow, the results was compared with that of Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) using k -$\epsilon$ model as well as experimental data. The results showed that the LES and RANS well predicted the mean velocity field of a non-swirling flow. Specially, the LES showed a very excellent prediction performance for the corner recirculation zone. In swirling flow, comparing with the results obtained by RANS, LES showed a better performance in predicting the mean axial and azimuthal velocities, and the central recirculation zone. Finally, unsteady phenomena of turbulent flow was examined with LES methodology.

In this study, a numerical prediction method on manoeuvrability of Wind Turbine Installation Vessel (WTIV) is presented. Planar Motion Mechanism (PMM) captive test for the bare hull of WTIV is carried out in the model basin and compared with the numerical results using RANS simulation based on Open-source Field Operation And Manipulation (OpenFOAM) calculation to validate the developed method. The manoeuvrability of WTIV with skeg and/or without skeg is investigated using the numerical approach along with the captive model test. In the numerical calculations, the dynamic stability index which indicates the course keeping ability is evaluated and compared for three different hull configurations i.e. bare hull and other two hulls with center skeg and twin skeg. This paper proves that the numerical approach using RANS simulation can be readily applied to estimate the manoeuvrability of WTIV at the initial design stage.
For a flow normal to a circular disk, the flow separation occurs from the edge of the disk and the flow recirculation zone exists behind the disk. Many existing studies conducted simulations of flow normal to a circular disk under low Reynolds numbers. Some studies performed LES or DES simulations under high Reynolds numbers. However, comparative study for different RANS models for high Reynolds numbers is very limited. This study presents numerical simulations of a flow normal to a circular disk using Realizable k-ε model and SST k-ω model. The recirculation bubble length and drag coefficient were compared with the experimental data. The SST k-ω model showed the excellent predictions for the recirculation bubble length and drag coefficient.
In this paper, separated flow characteristics is studied using the RANS(Reynold-averaged Navier-Stokes) modeling. The analysis is performed for the NASA's hump configuration which is the combination of a flat plate and a hump. This configuration was used in NASA's flow control workshop and it was one of validation cases for RANS and LES simulations. The separation occurs at the 65% of model length where a slot is positioned for the flow control. No flow control case and steady suction case are studied using RANS modeling. The Spalart-Allmaras model and the SST(Shear Stress Transport) model are applied and their accuracy are compared. To correlate CFD analysis with experimental data, the optimal boundary condition was investigated and the effect of a cavity around the slot is studied for the no flow case.

In this paper, a modelling technique for simulating self-propelled ships in waves is presented. The flow is modelled using a RANS solver coupled with an actuator disk model for the propeller. The motion of the ship is taken into consideration in the definition of the actuator disk region as well as the advance ratio of the propeller. The RPM of the propeller is controlled using a PID-controller with constraints added on the maximum permissible RPM increase rate. Results are presented for a freely surging model in regular waves with different constraints put on the PID-controller. The described method shows promising results and allows for the studying of several factors relating to self-propulsion. However, more validation data is needed to judge the accuracy of the model.

The reactor cavity cooling system (RCCS) is a passive reactor safety system commonly present in the designs of High-Temperature Gas-cooled Reactors (HTGR) that removes heat from the reactor pressure vessel by means of natural convection and radiation. It is one of the factors responsible for ensuring that the reactor does not melt down under any plausible accident scenario. For the simulation of accident scenarios, which are transient phenomena unfolding over a span of up to several days, intermediate fidelity methods and system codes must be employed to limit the models' execution time. These models can quantify radiation heat transfer well, but heat transfer caused by natural convection must be quantified with the use of correlations for the heat transfer coefficient. It is difficult to obtain reliable correlations for HTGR RCCS heat transfer coefficients experimentally due to such a system's size. They could, however, be obtained from high-fidelity steady-state simulations of RCCSs. The Rayleigh number in RCCSs is too high for using a Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) technique; thus, a Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) approach must be employed. There are many RANS models, each performing best under different geometry and fluid flow conditions. To find the most suitable one for simulating an RCCS, the RANS models need to be validated. This work benchmarks various RANS models against three experiments performed on the HTTR RCCS Mockup by the Japanese Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) in 1993. This facility is a 1/6 scale model of a vessel cooling system (VCS) for the High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor (HTTR), which is operated by JAEA. Multiple RANS models were evaluated on a simplified 2d-axisymmetric geometry. They were found to reproduce the experimental temperature profiles with errors of up to 22% for the lowest temperature benchmark and 15% for the higher temperature benchmarks. The results highlight that the pragmatic turbulence models need to be validated for high Rayleigh natural convection-driven flows and improved accordingly, more publicly available experimental data of RCCS resembling experiments is needed and indicate that a 2d-axisymmetric geometry approximation is likely insufficient to capture all the relevant phenomena in RCCS simulations.
