  • In this paper, we present our experiences in using symbolic model checker(SMV) to analyze a number of properties of RACE cache coherence protocol designed by ETRI(Electronics and Communications Research Institute) and to verify that RACE protocol satisfies important requirements. To investigate this, we specified the model of the RACE protocol as the input language of SMV and specified properties as a formula in temporal logic CTL. We successfully used the symbolic model checker to analyze a number of properties of RACE protocol. We verified that abnormal state/input combinations was not occurred and every possible request of processors was executed correctly We verified that RACE protocol satisfies liveness, safety and the property that any abnormal state/input combination was never occurred. Besides, We found some ambiguities of the specification and a case of starvation that the protocol designers could not expect before. By this verification experience, we show advantages of model checking method. And, we propose a new method to generate automatically test cases which are used in simulation and testing.

  • This study was undertaken to investigate the effect of exercise induced pulmonary hemorrhage(EIPH) on the finishing position of racehorses, 400 bleeders(305: 1 time, 76: 2 times, 19: 3 times, total: 514 cases) which had bled(EIPH) from their nostrils after their races at the Seoul racecourse during the 5 years period('93-'97) were analyzed for this study. The ratio of bleeders to total racehorses in finishing position 1-3,4-6, 7-9 or above 10 was 0.55, 0.84, 0.90 or 1.13%, respectively. There is tendency to higher incidence of bleeding in the later positioned racehorses group. To analyze the correlation between EIPH and finishing position, finishing potion of each EIPHed horses' was checked at 7 successive races(3 races each before/after EIPH. The average final position at the -3rd race, -2nd racer -lst racer EIPHed race, 1st race,2nd race and 3rd race of each bleeder was 5.85. 5.94, 6.21, 7.32, 7.20, 6.51 and 6.53, respectively. Raring times were adjusted to 1,000 m equivalent. Average racing times of the -3rd race,-2nd racer -lst raced EIPHed race, 1st race, 2nd race and 3rd race of each bleeder was 67.1, 67.1, 67.2, 67.6, 67.5, 67.4 and 67.3 second, respectively. Bleeders which finished the race within 1 second following the winners were 25. 3% of total bleeders. The rest 74.7% reached at the finish line 1 second later than the winners. Particularly 46.3% of bleeders were above 2 second later. Therefore this study suggested that bleeding has effect on performance of the racehorse, consequently it make bleeders be placed later positions.

  • [Purpose] Exercise-associated hyponatremia (EAH) is a well-known condition among endurance athletes at low altitudes. The incidence of EAH during ultramarathons at high altitudes warrants further investigation. This prospective observational study was conducted on the participants of the Leadville Trail 100 run, a 161-km race held at a high altitude (2,800 m-3,840 m). [Methods] Venous blood samples were collected before and immediately after the race. The participants completed an electronic survey after the race. Our main outcome measure was the post-race serum sodium ([Na+]) level. [Results] Of the 672 athletes who started the race, 351 (52%) successfully completed the event within the 30-hour cut-off. Post-race blood samples were collected from 84 runners (66 finishers). Both pre- and post-race blood samples were collected from 37 participants. Twenty percent of the post-race participants had EAH. Only one post-race participant had a [Na+] level of <130 mmol/L. All participants with EAH were asymptomatic. One participant had an abnormal pre-race [Na+] level (134 mmol/L). Female participants had a significantly higher rate of EAH than male participants (40% vs. 16%; p=0.039). Age, body mass index, weight changes, race completion status, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug use, and urine specific gravity were not associated with the development of EAH. Lower postrace [Na+] levels were associated with higher serum creatine kinase values (R2=0.1, p<0.005). [Conclusion] High altitude (3,840 m peak) does not appear to enhance the incidence of EAH after an ultramarathon footrace. This suggests that ambient temperature (low temperatures reduce risk), sex (female predilection), endurance running, and overhydration are more prominent risk factors for EAH than high altitude.

  • In this study, 3 dimensional non-linear race car vehicle model including Chassis, steering and suspension systems were modeled by using Multi-Body Dynamics Simulation Program, DADS 9.5(Dynamic Analysis and Design System),which was used in kinematic and dynamic analysis. A full race car vehicle dynamics model using DADS program was presented and analysis was carried out to estimate the handling characteristics that may be very useful to design a race car in early design stage. The simulation of vehicle handling behavior for step steering input was simulated and compared with different design parameters: torsional stiffness of the front and rear anti roll bars, the motion ratio of the front and rear suspension system, the location of the tie rod joint, in multibody dynamic model. Therefore this simulation model before race car construction in early design step will be helpful for race car designer to save time and limited budget.

  • This research was conducted to investigate the effects of race conditions on racing injury in Thoroughbred(TB) horses. A total 335 horses were investigated the relationship between race conditions and racing injuries. The main environmental factors of racing injuries were spring season, rainy weather and sloppy racetrack. In the race types, high incidence of racing injury was found in special weigh, stakes, middle class and long length race. This results suggest that the racing injury can be effected to both individual body condition and various racetrack conditions.

  • Precision of bearing race is very important to maintain the clearance between ball and inner race. In internal grinding of bearing race, its roundness is dependent on shoe wear, accuracy of jig, dressing method and grinding conditions. In this study, the characteristics of shoe wear and eccentricity of workpiece were investigated experimentally. When wear of fornt shoe wear reaches at 100.mu. m and that of rear shoe reaches at 114 .mu. m, eccentricity of inner race is increased to 1.4 .mu. m. Roundness of race is mainly related to wear of rear shoe and ring type shoe is recommended to improve roundness of race.

  • A few studies have shown that the function of fusiform face area is selectively involved in the perception of faces including a race difference. We investigated the neural substrates of the face-selective region called fusiform face area In the ventral occipital-temporal cortex and same-race memory superiority In the fusiform face area by the event-related fMRI. In our fMRI study, twelve healthy subjects (Oriental-Korean) performed the implicit distinction of the race while they consciously made familiar-judgments, regardless of whether they considered a face as Oriental-Korean or European-American. In the race distinction as an implicit task, the fusiform face areas (FFA) and the right parahippocampal gyrus had a greater response to the presentation of Oriental-Korean than European-American faces, but in the consciously race distinction between Oriental-Korean and European-American faces, any significant difference in the FFA was not observed. These results suggest that different activation in the fusiform regions and right parahippocampal gyrus resulting from same-race memory superiority could be implicitly taken place by the physiological processes of face recognition.

  • Species and races of root-knot nematodes in greenhouses in southern Korea were investigated and a simple identification scheme was provided. Among 23 populations of root-knot nematodes, Meloidogyne arenaria race 2 was 59%, M. incognita race 1 was 23%, and an unknown race of M. incognita was 18%. Total length of M. arenaria juveniles was 411㎛(306-503㎛) and that of M. incognita was 384㎛(312-488㎛); however, the ranges of two species were overlapped and could not be used to distinguish the two species. Excretory pore in female head was a consistent character to differentiate M. arenaria and M. incognita.

  • In this paper, a sprint race of human and that of humanoid robot are compared. Sprint race is one of the most popular sports games of human. HuroCup organized by FIRA is the most representative sports event of humanoid robots. The rules of the sprint race in HuroCup are explained and the strategy for the sprint race that humanoid robots can play is proposed. A child-sized humanoid robot is designed and developed so that it can play to follow the rules of the sprint race. The algorithm of the game strategy is applied to the robot, and the robot's performance is tested. Eventually, in HuroCup, it is verified that the developed humanoid robot is suitable to perform the sprint race.
