Tripod polishing을 이용한 IBAD/RABiTS 기판의 TEM 분석 (TEM analysis of IBAD/RABiTS substrates prepared by Tripod polishing)

  • Sample preparation plays a critical role in microstructure analysis using TEM. Although TEM specimen has been usually prepared by jet-polishing or Ar-ion beam milling technique. these methods could not be applied to YBCO CC which is composed of IBAD or RABiTS substrates, several buffet layers, and YBCO superconducting layer because of big difference in mechanical strengths between the metallic phase and oxide phases. To obtain useful cross-sectional information such as interface between the phases or second phases in YBCO CC, it is prerequisite to secure the large area of thin section in the cross-sectional direction. The superconducting layer or the buffer layers are relatively weak and fragile compared to the metallic substrate such as Ni-5wt%W RABiTS of Hastelloy-based IBAD, and preferential removal of weak ceramic phases during polishing steps makes specimen preparation almost impossible. Tripod polisher and small jig were home-made and employed to sample preparation. The polishing angle was maintained <$1^{\circ}$ throughout the polishing steps using 2 micrometers attached to the tripod plate. TEM specimens with large and thin area could be secured and used for RABiTS/IBAD substrate analyses. In some cases, additional Ar-beam ion milling with low beam current and impinging angle was used for less than 30 sec. to remove debris or polishing media attacked to the specimens.

RABiTS-PLD 법을 이용한 장선 박막형 고온초전도선재 (Long length HTS coated conductor by RABiTS-PLD method)

  • 냉간 압연과 열처리 공정을 통해 2축 배향성을 가지는 금속 기판 위에 산화물 박막을 증착 시켜 같은 정도의 2축 배향성을 갖도록 제조된 RABiTS template 위에 YBCO 초전도체를 PLD 방법으로 증착하여 YBCO coated conductor 선재를 제조하였다. RABiTS template은 NiW/$Y_2O_3$/NSZ/$CeO_2$ 구조로 DC reactive sputtering와 PLD 방법에 의해 증착되었다. 모든 공정은 reel-to-reel 방식의 연속 공정으로 이루어졌다. 1m와 10m급의 장선 고온초전도선재를 제조하고, 이에 대한 전기적 특성과 초전도 및 다층 산화물 완충층에 대한 결정성, 표면 특성에 대한 분석을 수행하였다. 그 결과 1m 길이에서 end-to-end 107 A와 10.6m 길이에서 end-to-end 51A의 임계 전류를 획득하였다. 제조된 박막형 선재의 초전도 층과 다층의 산화물 완충층 모두 금속 기판의 결정성을 그대로 유지하면서, epitaxial하게 성장하였으며, 최종 YBCO의 in-plane FWHM 값은 > $9^{\circ}$를 유지 하였다.

Magneto-resistances of the coated conductors fabricated on the tilted single crystalline Ni substrates and RABiTS

  • Magneto-resistances of the YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-{\delta}}$ based coated conductors fabricated on the tilted single crystalline Ni substrates and RABiTS (rolling assisted bi-axially textured substrate) were measured under various magnetic fields. The activation energies of vortices were estimated from them by fitting equation of p = p$_o$ exp(-U(H,T)/k$_B$T). When currents flew in the rolling direction for the case of the tilted single crystalline YBCO on the RATS, the activation energies were similar to those of c-axis normal YBCO films on the SrTiO$_3$ single crystal substrates [5] and were slightly larger than those of the RABiTS coated conductors. On the contrary, for the currents flowing in the transverse direction, the magnetoresistances show double transitions in the temperature with much smaller activation energies.

  • Continuous physical vapor deposition (PVD) method is one of many processes to fabricate long length coated conductor which is required for successful large-scale application of superconducting power devices. Three film deposition systems (pulsed laser deposition, sputtering, and evaporation) equipped with reel-to-reel(R2R) metal tape moving apparatus were installed and used to deposit multi-layer oxide thin films. Both RABiTS and IBAD texture templates are used. IBAD template consists of CeO$_2$(PLD)/YSZ(IBAD) on stainless steel(SS) metal tape, and RABiTS template has the structure of CeO$_2$/YSZ/Y$_2$O$_3$ which was continuously deposited on Ni-alloy tape using R$_2$R evaporation and DC reactive sputtering in a deposition system designed to do both processes. 0.4 m-long coated conductor with Ic(77 K) of 34 A/cm was fabricated using RABiTS template. 0.5 m and 1.1 m-long coated conductor with Ic(77 K) of 41 A/cm and 26 A/cm were fabricated using IBAD template.

  • 다층의 산화물 박막 구조를 갖는 coated conductor의 장선 제조를 위해서는 연속 증착 공정이 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 RABiTs와 IBAD 공정을 사용한 texture template을 사용하였으며, 금속 테잎을 연속적으로 이동하면서 증착할 수 있는 박막증착 장치(PLD, sputtering, evaporation)를 구축하여 PVD 방법으로 coated conductor를 제조하였다. $CeO_2/YSZ/Y_2O_3$의 완충층을 sputtering 과 evaporation을 이용하여 2축배향성을 가지는 NiW 위에 연속적으로 증착하였다. YBCO 초전도층은 연속 PLD 방법으로 증착하고, Tc, Ic, XRD, SEM을 통해 그 특성을 분석하였다. 그 결과 RABiTS template을 사용하여 Ic가 34A/cm(@77K)인 0.4m 길이의 coated conductor를 제조하였다. IBAD template를 사용하여 Ic가 34A/cm(@77K)인 0.5m길이의 coated conductor를 제조하였고, Jc는 $1.2MA/cm^2$ 이였다.

MOD 공정에 의한 산화물 완충층 제조 (Fabrication of oxide buffer layers for coated conductors)

  • Oxide buffer layers for YBCO coated conductors were fabricated using MOD processing and development of microstructure and texture were investigated. A $CeO_2$ buffer layers were formed on RABiTS tape. Acetate-based precursor solution was employed to synthesize the precursor solution. Subsequently, the precursor solution was stabilized and modified with triethanolamine. $CeO_2$ precursor gel film was coated and annealed in $Ar/H_2$ atmosphere at high temperature. An annealed $CeO_2$ film shows mixed orientation with high (001) texturing. It was shown that (111) texture of $CeO_2$ layers were enhanced by multiple coating. This degradation was attributed to development of microcracks in the multiply coated $CeO_2$ films. Also discussed are the synthesis and the characterization of $La_2Zr_2O_7$ (LZO) buffer layers on RABiTS tape. A biaxially textured LZO buffer layer was fabricated with MOD processing method using metal alkoxide based precursor solution. It was shown that the LZO film were epitaxially grown on RABiTS tape and crack-free & uniform surface was obtained after annealing in $Ar/H_2$ atmosphere.
