The Selection and Decision in R&D and Patents: A Hurdle Negative Binomial Approach (허들음이항모형을 이용한 기업의 혁신선택과 특허성과의 결정요인에 관한 연구)

  • There have been various researches on the relationship between a company's R&D investment and the outcome from innovation. However, these studies failed to effectively analyze the decision-making process followed by companies in relation to knowledge production. Especially, in analyzing the patent of companies, the Poisson model has been commonly used, but its limitations have been pointed out. In recent years, many studies have adopted negative binomial models, but they still pose limitations in analyzing the selection process. This paper proposed a hurdle negative binomial model to effectively reflect the company's decision embedded within patent information and conduct an empirical analysis on a survey of businesses' activities. In particular, the study analyzed the selection process of companies in determining the number of patents. As a result of estimation, the presence of over-dispersion was identified. In addition, the Wald-test confirmed that setting up of hurdles was valid, and there was a difference between the results of hurdle models and those of general negative binomial settings.

Effects of miR-152 on Cell Growth Inhibition, Motility Suppression and Apoptosis Induction in Hepatocellular Carcinoma Cells

  • Background: miR-152 is involved in the genesis and development of several malignancies. However, its role in HCC has not been fully clarified. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinicopathological significance of miR-152 and its effect on the malignant phenotype of HCC cells. Methods: miR-152 expression was detected using real-time quantitative RT-PCR in 89 pairs of HCC formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded and their adjacent tissues. Functionally, in vitro effects and mechanisms of action of miR-152 on proliferation, viability, caspase activity, apoptosis and motility were explored in HepG2, HepB3 and SNU449 cells, as assessed by spectrophotometry, fluorimetry, fluorescence microscopy, wound-healing and Western blotting, respectively. Results: miR-152 expression in HCC was downregulated remarkably compared to that in adjacent hepatic tissues. miR-152 levels in groups of advanced clinical stage, larger tumor size and positive HBV infection, were significantly lower than in other groups. A miR-152 mimic could suppress cell growth, inhibit cell motility and increase caspase activity and apoptosis in HCC cell lines. Furthermore, Western blotting showed that the miR-152 mimic downregulated Wnt-1, DNMT1, ERK1/2, AKT and TNFRS6B signaling. Intriguingly, inverse correlation of TNFRF6B and miR-152 expression was found in HCC and bioinformatics confirmed that TNFRF6B might be a target of miR-152. Conclusions: Underexpression of miR-152 plays a vital role in hepatocarcinogenesis and lack of miR-152 is related to the progression of HCC through deregulation of cell proliferation, motility and apoptosis. miR-152 may act as a tumor suppressor miRNA by also targeting TNFRSF6B and is therefore a potential candidate biomarker for HCC diagnosis, prognosis and molecular therapy.

Carburizing Behavior of AISI 4115 Steel with a Flow Rate of Acetylene and Specimen Location in an 1 ton-class Mass Production-type Vacuum Carburizing Furnace (1 톤급 양산형 진공 침탄로에서 아세틸렌 유량과 로 내 위치에 따른 AISI 4115 강의 침탄 거동)

  • The influence of acetylene flow rates on the carburizing behavior of an AISI 4115 steel in 1 ton-class mass production-type vacuum carburizing furnace has been studied through microstructure, carbon concentration, hardness analyses. The AISI 4115 steels were carburized with various flow rates (20, 32.7, 60 l/min) and locations in the furnace (top, center, bottom) at 950℃. The acetylene flow rate played an important role in controlling the carburizing properties of carburized samples, such as effective case depth and uniformity carburizing according to location in the furnace. At an acetylene flow rate of 20 l/min, the carburized samples had a shallow average hardened layer (0.645 mm) compared to the target hardening depth (1 mm) due to low carbon flux and spatial uniformity of carburization (17.8%) in the furnace. At a flow rate of 60 l/min, the carburized samples showed an average hardened layer (1.449 mm) deeper than the target hardening depth and had the spatial uniformity of carburization (98.8%). In particular, at a flow rate of 32.7 l/min, the carburized samples had an average hardened layer (1.13 mm) close to the target hardening depth and had the highest carburizing uniformity (99.1%). As a result, an appropriate flow rate of 32.7 l/min was derived to satisfy the target hardening depth and to have spatial uniform hardened layer in the furnace.

  • 저자는 연령을 추정하기 위한 기본자료를 얻기 위하여 상하악의 대구치, 소구치의 발육정도를 평가하였다. Chitinase from an Antarctic Bacterium, Sanguibacter sp. KCTC10714

  • A chitinase-producing bacterium strain KCTC10714 was isolated from sea sand around the King Sejong Station, King George Island in Antarctica. It was identified as Sanguibacter sp., based on the biochemical properties and 16S rRNA gene sequence. KCTC10714 chitinase showed enzyme activity in broad range of temperature from 0 to $70^{\circ}C$. At $0^{\circ}C$, it showed 70.9% of relative activity in comparison with 100%. The chitinase gene of KCTC10714 was cloned using inverse PCR cloning method. KCTC10714 chitinase gene was designated as chi21702. The ORF of chi21702 consisted of 1,449 bp (482 amino acid), and contained ChtBD3 (a chitin/cellulose binding domain) and an active site for chitinase family 18.

Impact of dental hygienists' positive psychological capital, growth mindset, and self-leadership on retention intention (치과위생사의 긍정심리자본과 성장마인드셋, 셀프리더십이 재직의도에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to analyze the factors influencing the positive psychological capital, growth mindset, and self-leadership of dental hygienists in the Seoul and Gyeonggi regions with regard to their retention intention. The findings would serve as basic data for improving the retention intention. Methods: The methods espoused for analysis comprised independent sample t-test and ANOVA for group comparisons, Pearson's correlation analysis for examining the correlation between variables, and multiple regression analysis for identifying factors affecting retention intention. Results: Positive psychological capital was higher among those under the age of 27 and employed in dental clinics. Growth mindset was higher among those with less than three years of work experience and those working in clinics. Self-leadership was higher among those aged 28-31, and retention intention was higher among those under the age of 27 and with less than three years of work experience (p<0.05). A correlation was observed between positive psychological capital and self-leadership (r=0.760), self-leadership and retention intention (r=0.514), positive psychological capital and retention intention (r=0.505), positive psychological capital and growth mindset (r=0.337), and growth mindset and self-leadership (r=0.245) (p<0.001). Factors influencing the intention to stay at work were self-leadership (β=0.309) and positive psychological capital (β=0.242) (p<0.05). Conclusions: In order to improve dental hygienists' retention intention, it is necessary to devise strategies for improving positive psychological capital and self-leadership.

MiR-204 acts as a potential therapeutic target in acute myeloid leukemia by increasing BIRC6-mediated apoptosis

  • Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is one of the most common hematological malignancies all around the world. MicroRNAs have been determined to contribute various cancers initiation and progression, including AML. Although microRNA-204 (miR-204) exerts anti-tumor effects in several kinds of cancers, its function in AML remains unknown. In the present study, we assessed miR-204 expression in AML blood samples and cell lines. We also investigated the effects of miR-204 on cellular function of AML cells and the underlying mechanisms of the action of miR-204. Our results showed that miR-204 expression was significantly downregulated in AML tissues and cell lines. In addition, overexpression of miR-204 induced growth inhibition and apoptosis in AML cells, including AML5, HL-60, Kasumi-1 and U937 cells. Cell cycle analysis further confirmed an augmentation in theapoptotic subG1 population by miR-204 overexpression. Mechanistically, baculoviral inhibition of apoptosis protein repeat containing 6 (BIRC6) was identified as a direct target of miR-204. Enforcing miR-204 expression increased the luciferase activity and expression of BIRC6, as well as p53 and Bax expression. Moreover, restoration of BIRC6 reversed the pro-apoptotic effects of miR-204 overexpression in AML cells. Taken together, this study demonstrates that miR-204 causes AML cell apoptosis by targeting BIRC6, suggesting miR-204 may play an anti-carcinogenic role in AML and function as a novel biomarker and therapeutic target for the treatment of this disease.

  • Organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) with multiple organic layers were fabricated to obtain and to evaluate an equivalent resistance and an equivalent capacitance of OLED device. The staircase voltage with an increasing period and a constant period was designed and applied to the OLED. The resistance of OLED was found to decrease from $270\;k{\Omega}$ to $2\;K{\Omega}$ as applied voltage increased after turn on. The equivalent capacitance of OLED maintained unchanged at low voltage level and deceased after showing peak value as the applied voltage increased.

  • Objective: To investigate whether polymorphisms of gene encoding CYP1B1 is associated with the risk of endometriosis in Korean women. Methods: We investigated 199 patients with histopathologically confirmed endometriosis rAFS stage III/IV and 183 control group women who were surgically proven to have no endometriosis. The genetic distribution of four different CYP1B1 polymorphisms at $G^{119}-T$, $G^{432}-C$, $T^{449}-C$, and $A^{453}-G$ were analyzed by polymerase chain reaction(PCR) and restriction fragment length polymorphism of PCR products. Results: We found no overall association between each individual CYP1B1 genotype and the risk of endometriosis. The odds ratio of genotype GG/GC+GG/TC+TT/AA compared to GG/CC/CC/AA(reference) was calculated as 2.06 with a 95% confidence interval of 1.003~4.216. Conclusion: This results suggest that CYP1B1 genetic polymorphism may be associated with development of endometriosis in Korean women.
