  • The objective of this study is to clarify the seismic capacity and the characteristics in the hysteretic behavior of RC structures with nonseismic detailing. To do this, an exterior beam-column subassemblage was selected from a 10-story RC building and 6 1/3-scale specimens were manufactured with 3 variables; ⑴ with and without slab, ⑵ upward and downward direction of anchorage for the bottom bar in beams, and ⑶ with and without hoop bars in the joint region. The test results have shown that ⑴ the existence of slab increased the strength in positive and negative moment, 25% and 62%, respectively; ⑵ the Korean practice of anchorage (downward and 25 $d_{b}$ anchorage length) caused the 8% reduction of strength and the early strength degradation when compared with the case of seismic details; and ⑶ the existence of hoop bars in the joint region does not show significant difference because the size of column is much larger than that of beam.m.

  • Strengthening a damaged structure by bonding steel plate on the surface of cracked structural members have been widely accepted for strengthening the structural components Recently, however, caron fiber sheets have been developed in order to achive more effective way of strengthening damaged structures due to their superior material properties to those of conventionally used steel plates in terms of their lighter unit weight and higher tensile strength. It has been reported that when both methods are applied to a damaged beam element, flexural strength and its stiffness of a beam increase and the rate of crack development as well as crack width and edflection under service loads are reduced, In this study some experiments are performed in order to comparetively observe the structural properties of the damaged beams which are either strengthened with different lengths of steel plates or with carbon sheets on the crack propagation, failure mechanisms, and load-deflection charateristics under the fatigue loadings.

  • The purpose of this paper to describe an analytical model that is capable of reproducing the hysteretic behavior of beam-column joints under cyclic loading and to suggest the variable of hysteretic model for the inelastic analysis of R/C frame structures to do this quasi-static analysis using IDARC program was performed for the beam-column joints. The effort to obtain the result of analysis similar to those of experiment was made by determining the value for hysteretic parameters representing stiffness degradation, strength deterioration and pinching effect. The accuracy and reliability of the proposed analytical model was demonstrated by comparison of load-displacement relation, maximum strength, stiffness degradation and energy dissipation.

  • Static load tests were performed to propose the appropriate strengthening method of R/C deep beam using Carbon Fiber Sheets and compared to those of nonlinear structural analysis. Fiber direction and anchorage method on the deep beam specimen were chosen as experimental variables, which lead to the following conclusions that initial shear cracks are independent of strengthening method and fiber directions perpendicular to the expected fracture mode, which was given by the nonlinear structural analysis, show better performance compared to those of horizontal and vertical fiber directions.

  • In this study, a strut-and-tie models for the coupling beam based on deformations are presented. To design shear-dominated R/C coupling beams, it is important to consider shear strength deterioration with required deformations. This study proposes the method of estimating shear strength of the reinforced concrete coupling beams. The proposed method determines the strain states from target displacements based on the nonlinear truss analysis. The estimated horizontal strain of beam is then used in calculating the strength of the diagonal strut with compatibility conditions. The deterioration of shear strength of the coupling beam depends on the strength degradation of struts due to plastic deformations.

  • A nonlinear finite element analysis of R/C hybrid deep T-beam with web opening subjected to pure torsion is presented. Hexahedral 8-nodes and space truss element were used for modeling concrete and reinforcement. The reinforcement was assumed perfectly bonded to the corresponding nodes of the concrete element. The constitutive relations for concrete and reinforcement are based on the modified field theory and elastic perfectly plastic. The smear crack approach was adopted for modeling the crack. The torque-twist angle relationship curve based on the finite element analysis was compared to the experimental results. The comparison shows that the curve of torque-twist angle predicted by the nonlinear finite element analysis is linear before cracking and close to the experimental result. After cracking, the curve becomes nonlinear and stiffer compared to the experimental result.

  • In this study, a well-established model and a new simplified version of it, that help avoid collapses in reinforced concrete structures during strong earthquakes, are presented and discussed. Using this model, the initial formation of plastic hinges and the final concentration of the damages only in beams are accurately assured. The model also assures that the columns and the beam-column joints can remain intact. This model can be applied for the design of modern R/C structures, as well as for the design of strengthening schemes of old R/C structures by the use of reinforced concrete jackets. The model can also predict the form of earthquake damages in old structures but also earthquake damages in the modern structures.
