The use of roadheaders has been increasing to mitigate the problems of noise and vibration during tunneling operations in urban area. Since lack of experience of roadheader for hard rock, the selection of appropriate machines and the evaluation of cutting rates have been challenging. Currently, empirical models developed overseas are commonly used to evaluate cutting rates, but their effectiveness has not been verified for domestic rocks. In this paper, a comprehensive literature review was conducted to assess the rock cutting force, cutterhead capacity, and cutting rate to select the appropriate machine and evaluate its performance. The cutterhead capacity was reviewed based on the literature results for the site. Furthermore, a new empirical model and simplified method for predicting cutting rates were proposed through data analysis in relation to operation time and rock strength, and compared with those of the conventional model from the manufacturer. The results show good agreement for high strength range upper 80 MPa of uniaxial compressive strength.
In this paper, we present a literature review of the mechanisms and methodology for technology spillover, in order to provide a theoretical and practical foundation for estimating the technology spillover effect of public funded R&D programs. Our research consists of four parts. First, we investigate what technology spillover is and how it works. Second, we review the methodology used to empirically measure technology spillover, with a view to understanding the advantages and disadvantages of each method. Third, we identify the gap between the spillover phenomenon and its estimated results, caused by the limitations of the methodology, and discuss the challenges in measuring technology spillover. Finally, we present several considerations to improve the measurement of technology spillover in the context of public funded R&D programs. Our paper provides policy makers and researchers with basic knowledge about technology spillover and helps them suitably evaluate the results obtained from the literature review. In addition, it contributes towards improving the existing methodology by recognizing the gap between the spillover phenomenon and the methodology.
Government-funded research institutes (GRIs) have played a pivotal role in national R&D in Korea. To achieve desired goals of GRIs with the limited R&D budget, their performance along with time needs to be measured and compared so that appropriate R&D policies can be formulated and implemented. This study measures the dynamic performance of GRIs from the efficiency perspective using the window model of data envelopment analysis (DEA). DEA is a non-parametric approach to measuring the relative efficiency of decision-making units (DMUs) with multiple inputs and outputs, and the DEA window model can capture the dynamic changes in efficiency of DMUs during multiple periods. The relative efficiency of GRIs is measured from the two perspectives: R&D and R&BD. Patents, papers, technology transfers are selected as outputs for R&D while compensated technology transfers and technology royalty are employed as outputs for R&BD. This study measures and compares the two types of performance of 20 Korean GRIs under the control of National Research Council of Science and Technology during the period of six years from 2008 to 2013. The results are expected to provide fruitful implications for national R&D policy making.

[Purpose] Exercise is thought to have a significant effect on chemotherapy, and previous studies have reported that exercise can increase patient survival. Thus, in this review, we aimed to summarize various animal models to analyze the effects of exercise on breast cancer. [Methods] We summarized types of breast cancer animal models from various reports and analyzed the effects of exercise on anti-cancer factors in breast cancer animal models. [Results] This review aimed to systematically investigate if exercise could aid in suppressing breast cancer. Our study includes (a) increase in survival rate through exercise; (b) the intensity of exercise should be consistent and increased; (c) a mechanism for inhibiting carcinogenesis through exercise; (d) effects of exercise on anti-cancer function. [Conclusion] This review suggested the necessity of a variety of animal models for preclinical studies prior to breast cancer clinical trials. It also provides evidence to support the view that exercise plays an important role in the prevention or treatment of breast cancer by influencing anticancer factors.
In this study, we conducted a comparative analysis of R&D investment efficiency and operational efficiency of IT firms using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). We categorized thirteen sample firms into two groups-IT manufacturing and IT service-after an extensive literature review on IT industry classification. We adopted an output-oriented two-stage DEA model suggested by Banker et al. (1984) with total asset and R&D investment as input variables. Then, we constructed investment efficiency and operational efficiency by using Return on Equity (ROE) and Return on Asset (ROA) as intervening variables and operating income and Earnings Per Share (EPS) as output variables. The outcome of the analysis is summarized as follows. First of all, IT manufacturing firms were more efficient (57% on average) than IT service firms. To be specific, IT service firms showed decreasing returns to scale (DRS) with diseconomy of scale. In contrast, IT service firms showed higher operational efficiency (81.5% on average) than IT manufacturing firms. Also, we conducted a Mann-Whitney U test to compare the output of IT service firms and IT manufacturing firms. Lastly, we found a negative correlation ($R^2$ = -.754) between R&D investment efficiency and operational efficiency which infers the trade-off between two constructs
This study investigates the effects of the two most important indicators of a nation's state of scientific infrastructure: R&D investment and the number of R&D researchers engaged in high-tech product export competitiveness for a panel of 11 countries/economies from East Asia from 1994 to 2010. A GMM panel estimation method was employed to account for the dynamic effect of trade and to control for un-observed country specific effects that may arise due to an inter-country differences and intra-country dynamics. Accordingly, the empirical results reveal that (once controlled for the influence of per capita income) physical capital and infrastructure, a 1% increase in a country's expenditure on the ratio of R&D to GDP may increase high-tech product export performance by approximately $397 million per year. Other factors constant, a 1% increase in the number of R&D researchers is expected to increase the ability to export high-tech products by approximately $67 million. The East Asian development experience demonstrates how latecomers can follow systematic industrialization and join the handful of economies that have come a long way toward closing the knowledge gap with the global technological leaders. However, this does not mean that the policy approaches and overall commitments pursued by each East Asian economy in relation to R&D investment and acquisition of an adequate pool of researchers, and their ultimate achievements in high-tech product export competitiveness were uniform. As a result, there is still a significant variation among countries/economies in terms of performance. This study recommended a number of potential tools and policy instruments that may assist policy makers to foster R&D as an engine to enhance the high-tech product export competitiveness.
With the globalisation of the world's economies and the increasing role of multinational corporations in the generation of knowledge, global research and development (R&D) activities in emerging countries are following a new trend. This paper describes case studies of two large companies and discussion of the motives (demand vs. supply) and tasks (demand-driven vs. supply-driven) of R&D activities outside their home country. This work is based on an analysis of four overseas R&D units of two Korean ICT companies - here, ICT refers to goods and services in the information technology and communication technology fields - in India and China. The research findings are as follows: (1) The overseas R&D activities of Korean ICT enterprises in emerging countries may be driven by a combination of demand and supply factors of host countries; and (2) Korean overseas R&D centres in emerging countries may need to carry out both demand- and supply-driven tasks in view of the overlap between demand and supply factors of the host countries. Based on the results of this research, the following policy implications can be drawn for encouraging more effective overseas R&D activities of Korean enterprises in emerging countries. First, the government needs to expand the support systems so that enterprises can manage local R&D centres more effectively and actively use the variety of local support systems and useful information. Second, the government needs to expand the support systems so that the overseas R&D centres of Korean enterprises revitalise collaborations with locally excellent universities and research institutions.
This paper empirically studies the relationship between R&D expenditures and firms value. First, we can conjecture that R&D expenditures are enhancing the firms value. Such findings depend on an existing research, which R&D expenditures are intangible asset rather than expenses. Although, under U.S. accounting standards, financial statements do not report intangible assets but costs. Second, we can conjecture that short-term, the rate of increase in R&D expenditures had negative influence on firms valuation, because such findings indicates that R&D spending of costs incur mis-pricing. But long-term, consistently R&D expenditures may attract investors on the stock market. Third, lately firms focus on capital efficiency management, such a firms R&D expenditures incur high ROE. Generally investors put too much confidence in capital efficiency management and high ROE may attract investors on the stock market. Finally, High-Tech through the R&D investment improve firms competitive advantage, by competitive advantage, firms have reduced cost and raised productivity in the end improve firms value.
This paper describes a project - based quality management model that identifies development technologies and codes while at the same time verifying the ability to implement processes that are essential in R & D projects. In order to verify the process implemented in the R & D project implementation, there are review, checking points, and evaluating methods the process performance levels for five processes such as defining requirements which is the beginning stage of system development, testing process which is the completion stage of system development, and project management and peer review process for project management and support in the proposed project-based quality management model. For development technology and code validation, the model included the documented test cases for each requirement by the developer in the requirements definition stage, debugging and testing in the design and implementation stages, static analysis and open source licence verification procedure, and system environment. After applying the model in SW development R&D project for evaluating the process performance, and verifying the development technology and the code, the developers responded that the improvement in the development technique and the code, and upgrade of process performance level for project are more than 10%.

To date, biomedical application of three-dimensional (3D) printing technology remains one of the most important research topics and business targets. A wide range of approaches have been attempted using various 3D printing systems with general materials and specific biomaterials. In this review, we provide a brief overview of the biomedical applications using 3D printing techniques, such as surgical tool, medical device, prosthesis, and tissue engineering scaffold. Compared to the other applications of 3D printed products, the scaffold fabrication should be performed with careful selection of bio-functional materials. In particular, we describe how the biomaterials can be processed into 3D printed scaffold and applied to tissue engineering area.
