An Analysis of National R&D Trends in the Metaverse Field using Topic Modeling (토픽 모델링을 활용한 메타버스 분야 국가 R&D 동향 분석)

  • With the rise of the metaverse industry worldwide, relevant national strategies and nurturing systems have been prepared in Korea. As the complexity of policies increases, the importance of establishing data-based policymkaing is growing, and studies diagnosing national R&D trends in the metaverse field are still lacking. Therefore, this paper collected NTIS national R&D information for 9,651 R&D projects promoted from 2002 to 2020. And this study looked at the current status and identified major topics based on the topic modeling, and considered time-series changes in the topics. Eleven major topics of R&D tasks in the metaverse field were derived, hot topics were service/content/platform development and medical/surgical fields of application fields, and cold topics were urban/environment/spatial information fields. Strategic R&D Management, metaverse-related laws, and institutional studies were proposed as policy directions.

The Patterns and Directions of Technological Innovation in the Steel Industry (철강산업의 기술혁신패턴과 발전과제)

  • This article prospects the patterns of technological innovation in the steel industry and suggests the directions of technological innovation in Korean steel industry. Technological innovation patterns can be analysed through technological trends, innovation-inducing mechanism, and innovators' relationships. In the technological trends, direct coupling of manufacturing processes, lasting growth of mini-mill, and the importance of technological integration are prospected. In the innovation-inducing mechanism, while production system will be specialized, the development of new steel materials and environment-friendly technological innovation will be accelerated. In the innovators' relationships, steel industry faces more complex competition and new forms of inter-firm cooperation including M&A, joint venture, and joint R&D. In order to cope with such changes in the technological innovation patterns, Korean steel industry need to establish core competence based on technological innovation through a great leap in R&D investment, the production of high value-added products, the development of new generation steel technologies, strategic joint R&D, comprehensive technological cooperation, and government's active support.

R&D Trends of Brown Algae as Potential Candidates in Biomedical Application

  • Seaweeds contain various bioactive compounds. Especially, brown algae (Phaeophyceae), the second abundant group of seaweeds, contain numerous nutraceutical and pharmaceutical substances. In this review, we investigated on the brown algae-related patents and literature. Consequently, the research and development (R&D) trends of patent related to brown algae showed that the large majority was applied as the composition of stem cell culture medium and mostly used as active substances. In conclusion, we suggested that many researchers try to investigate and develop applications of brown algae as the sophisticated-level biomedical materials because brown algae are actively developing as simple-level biomedical materials.

Technology and Korea's Competitiveness Analysis through UAV Patent Analysis (UAV 핵심 기술 특허분석을 통한 기술 및 한국의 경쟁력 분석)

  • This paper presents the mega trends of technology and competitiveness analysis results based on patent analysis for establishing effective research and development (R&D) strategy on UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) in the aerial ICT industry. In order to analyze mega trends of UAV technologies, patent analysis is conducted focusing on published/registered patents of Korea, the U.S., Japan, and Europe. We divided the target technologies into 3 main category levels based on the converging technology of UAV and ICT. The 3,433 patents are collected. Patent indicators such as patent activity (PA), cites per patent (CPP), and major market expansion (MME) are extracted for grasping the technology competitiveness and Korea's competitiveness per sub category levels of UAV. We suggest the R&D strategy of each technology areas based on patent analysis results. We analyzed Korea's technology levels, advanced companies' R&D trends, and patent trends through patent information and expected that this paper would be utilized for establishment of R&D strategy of UAV in the future.

  • Health industry, a knowledge based high value-added industry, is being considered as a strategic area for the 21C and many advanced countries are making every endeavors for the promotion of health industry along with information technology, new materials, and mechatronics. Korean health industry, however, has been excluded from the governmental supports as well as bound by strict regulation so far, and there is a significant gap in technology compared with advanced countries. In 21C, technology is the main factor of national competitiveness and that is why the role of R&D institutes are so important in the high level of competition to cope with the technology protection policies of advanced countries. In this article, with Directory of Korean R&D Institutes published by Korea Industry Technology Association, I reviewed the trends of R&D institute of health industry. Main findings of the research can be summarized as follows. The portion of health industry R&D institute is 3.6% of total R&D institute but the amount of R&D investment is over than 5% This means health industry are knowledge based and R&D intensified industry, meanwhile the variations of same industry R&D institutes of health industry is huge in R&D investments and other activities. Regional distributions of health industry institutes show some kind of different patterns in each industry areas. Medical devices and Medical informatics's preference of metropolitan region are distinguished with other industry areas. Many of the institutes are located in same site of it's company rather than operating separate building for R&D specific uses. It is better for transforming ideas to products and close cooperation of research body with product lines, but it is a handicap for networking and communicating with other research institutions too. It takes 18.4yrs for bearing R&D institute on the average. For a long times 'copy products' or 'me too products' policies were easy way to maintain business entities. But recently, it is recognized that research activities are essential component of sustaining it's own business firms. This means technology itself is leading power of corporation itself in the high level of competition.

  • 본고에서는 Q-mark 모델의 R&D(Research & Development) 품질 영향 분석을 기술한다. 이를 위해 Q-mark 모델 특징과 종류 그리고 절차를 간략히 기술하고, R&D 품질에 대한 Q-mark 인증 모델 영향에 대해 연구현장 설문조사 내용을 바탕으로 연구결과 완성도 측면, 대외 신뢰도 개선을 통한 과제 수주 측면, 기술 이전과 사업화 측면, 그리고 과제관리 효율화 측면 등에서 분석하여 제시한다. 또 앞으로 Q-mark 모델이 보다 객관적이고 효과적인 R&D 품질관리를 위한 인증 모델로 개선되고 지속적으로 운영되기 위해 보완되어야 할 사항에 대해 설문조사 결과를 바탕으로 인증 측면, 프로세스 범주 측면, 제공 템플릿 측면, 그리고 품질 지원 서비스 및 전문성 측면에서 기술한다.

Research on R&D Planning Through NLP Analysis of Patent Information: Focusing on Display Technology (특허정보의 NLP 분석을 통한 R&D 계획수립 방안 연구: 디스플레이 기술 분석을 중심으로)

  • Patent information describes the history of technological progress in the relevant field, so it can be usefully used to identify trends in technological development and change and to establish R&D development strategies. This study proposes a method to identify the needs and problems of technology development at the planning stage of the R&D process and to analyze core technologies through patent analysis using Natural Language Processing(NLP) technology. As a big data source, collected patent documents registered in Google Patents for foldable technology, the latest technology in the display industry, and then extracted keywords using NLP analyzer. By classifying the extracted keywords into needs and problems for technology development, developed technology and materials, identified the needs of the market and customers and analyzed the technologies being researched and developed. Unlike previous studies that performed patent analysis, this methodology is different in that it can quickly and conveniently analyze the latest technology trends from big data called patents even if you do not have specialized knowledge and skills in the text mining. This study contributes to the digitalization of the R&D process based on data analysis.

R&D Strategic Planning Support Service Focused on the Relationships Between Technology and Actor (기술과 주체 간 상호 관계 중심적 R&D 전략 수립 지원 서비스)

  • R&D Strategic Planning plays a crucial role in determining success or failure of R&D. However, current automatic services for supporting the purpose merely provide fragmentary quantitative/qualitative analytics, and force domain experts to carry out further manual analysis by themselves. Thus, this study aims at automatically supporting R&D strategic planning with efficiency and effectiveness. To achieve the goal, we design major services in the viewpoint of the relationship between technology and R&D actor, which are essential elements in R&D. 'Trends and Predictions', 'Technology Levels', 'Relationship Paths', 'Roadmaps', and 'Competitors and Collaborators' services were designed and implemented on about 15 millions papers and patents. Future works will include the support of higher level in the hierarchy of strategic intelligence.
