This paper analyses the B-ISDN evolution strategy based on economic perspective, in terms of its effect on national competitiveness and quality of life. In the beginning, it considers the economic characteristic related with the emergences of B-ISDN services. The economic goods resulting from their services is classified by producer and consumer goods. The time difference between R&D and investment is also included to identify the technology gap between countries. And then, this paper intensifies the economic approach by complementing the technical factors which include both the network evolutionary characteristic and cost-effective implementation. The feasible scenarios are thereby obtained, one for technologically advanced countries and two for technologically unadvanced countries. The result of this study shows that technologically advanced countries can not only intensify their national competitiveness but also enhance quality of life, but not in the case of technologically less advanced countries.
Technology is closely related to industrial development and various studies have been performed to understand the linked structure for knowledge flow between the technology and industry. The research, however, wasn't carried out to flow for Korea National Research and Development projects. In this study, linked structure for technology-industry was discussed by utilizing patent data performed in actual National R&D using NTIS Information of the national research and development, and then it was analyzed how knowledge flows between the technology and industry are flowing. It should be defined that the individual applications expected by researchers at the start of the research and technology-industry applications actually applied from the research performances after research was completed. As a result, it was confirmed in most projects the flow of knowledge was occurring to predicted industries before the start of the R&D. However, the technology was applied to unexpected industry in three industries such as Y09(medical, precision and optical instruments), Y10(electrical and mechanical equipment), Y11(automotive and transportation equipment). The results of this study will be able to contribute to planning for efficient investment strategy of technology-industry by investigating the technology-industry knowledge flow relations of national R&D projects.

The learning curve has an important effect the growth of corporation. But, in Korea, the study and inference on the learning rate of each industry are unprepared, and so, Korean industires have difficult in productivity and cost. At this point, this study infers the learning rate of the oil industries and investigates the productivity and growth of them. In conclusion, this study presents the direction of the oil industries' development. With the intention of this objects, this study seizes the status which is concerned the total quantity, the operating rate, the plant capacity, the indicators concerning productivity, the investment of R & D and the scales, and then, infers and verifies the relevancy in connection with the learning rate. In the oil industry, the average rate of learning is 65.96% from 1982 to 1994 which the total quantity and the average operation time are used to infer the rate. To observe the low rate within a same period of time, this study takes the consequences that the learning rate is almost indentical with them each year. This steady state is caused by a difference between the employee and the decision maker about the acquirement and assimiliated of technology. When the high-quality technologies posses the environment to applicate in the scene of labor with them, this technology applies to the productivities. As the learning rate increases, the productivity has more effectiveness. The result of analysis about the effectiveness of the learning rate follows that the R & D unfoldes to exist and does not contribute to the growth of the oil industry. To analyze the variables of the growth, such as the learning rate, the investement of R & D, the operating rate and the gross value added to property, plant and equipment, the model is established and examined. The business strategy in the oil industry must be developed to achive the internal growth as well as the external.

This paper aims to develop an appropriate methodology for establishing an investment strategy for 'demonstration of artificial rainfall technology using UAV' and that include establishment of a technology classification, set of indicators for technology evaluation, suggestion of final key technology as a whole study area. It is designed to complement the latest research trend analysis results and expert committee opinions using quantitative analysis. The key indicators for technology evaluation consisted of three major items (activity, technology, marketability) and 10 detailed indicators. The AHP questionnaire was conducted to analyze the importance of indicators. As a result, it was analyzed that the attribute of the technology itself is most important, and the order of closeness to the implementation of the core function (centrality), feasibility (feasibility). Among the 16 technology groups, top investment priority groups were analyzed as ground seeding, artificial rainfall verification, spreading and diffusion of seeding material, artificial rainfall numerical modeling, and UAV sensor technology.

There were many comprehensive analyses conducted within the existing research activities wherein factors affecting technology progress including investment in R&D vis-${\Box}$-vis their influences act as the determinants of TFP. Note, however, that there were few comprehensive analysis in the industrial research performed regarding the impact of the economy of scale as it affects TFP; most of these research studies dealt with the analysis of the non -parametric Malmquist productivity index or used the stochastic frontier production function models. No comprehensive analysis on the impacts of individual independent variables affecting TFP was performed. Therefore, this study obtained the TFP increase rate of each industry by analyzing the factors of the existing growth accounting equation and comprehensively analyzed the TFP determinants by constructing a comprehensive analysis model considering the investment in R&D and economy of scale (smallness by industry) as the influencers of TFP by industry. First, for the TFP increase rate of the 15 industries as a whole, the annual average increase rate for 1993${\sim}$ 1997 was approximately 3.8% only; during 1999${\sim}$ 2000 following the foreign exchange crisis, however, the annual increase rate rose to approximately 7.8%. By industry, the annual average increase rate of TFP between 1993 and 2000 stood at 11.6%, the highest in the electrical and electronic equipment manufacturing business and IT manufacturing sector. In contrast, a -0.4% increase rate was recorded in the furniture and other product manufacturing sectors. In the case of the service industry, the TFP increase rate was 7.3% in the transportation, warehousing, and communication sectors. This is much higher than the 2.9% posted in the electricity, water, and gas sectors and -3.7% recorded in the wholesale, food, and hotel businesses. The results of the comprehensive analysis conducted on the determinants of TFP showed that the correlations between R&D and TFP in general were positive (+) correlations whose significance has yet to be validated; in the model where the self-employed and unpaid family workers were used as proxy variables indicating the smallness of industry out of the total number of workers, however, significant negative (-) correlations were noted. On the other hand, the estimation factors of variables surrogating the smallness of scale in each industry showed that a consistently high "smallness of scale" in an industry means a decrease in the increase rate of TFP in the same industry.
The automotive industry plays a significant role in the global economy. As a result, this industry is dominated by a handful of global players and it is not easy for a new entrant to enter this industry. Furthermore, success is even more difficult to achieve. Compared to other global brands, Hyundai has geographically well-balanced sales portfolio. The quality improvement is outstanding. The brand performance follows these quality and sales improvements. Yet, the global competition is ever intensifying. Now, it is the time to step up once more. The next strategic goal needs fundamental shift toward brand and marketing-focus. In constructing global marketing strategy, Hyundai Motor's vision is "Lifetime partner in mobility and beyond" and its goal is global top 3 brand by year 2015 through modern premium brand image and selling 5 million vehicles. The target brand positioning of Hyundai Motor is the leading position in premium dimension and stylish/modern dimension. The global brand strategy framework is based on the brand direction of "Modern Premium" and is designed to deliver core brand identity (i.e., Simple, Creative, Caring) to customers. In order to manage brand performance, Hyundai's marketing platformalso includes marketing performance management, brand performance management, and market driven organization. From this diagnosis, Hyundai Motor is well posed to build a strong brand. Nevertheless, there are still challenges ahead from consumer, technology, competitor, and macro-environment perspectives. To overcome these threats, the bases of competition for all successful automotive brands are various differentiation factors, including technology, performance, value proposition, or heritage. Hyundai Motor is well prepared so far. However, it is not tested against time yet whether Hyundai can overcome these unforeseeable major threats. Hyundai is trying to find the solution from a strong brand, while believing in "New Thinking. New Possibilities."
Purpose - This study aims to seek various plans to maintain the advancement of the overseas and domestic employment scenario through a case analysis of the Japanese industry, which maintains domestic employment while promoting the overseas advancement of companies despite having a similar industrial structure as Korea. The study further intends to derive insightful implications for Japanese manufacturing companies and government policies. Research design, data, and methodology - We selected four companies from the Japanese manufacturing industry. Being companies that were successful in increasing the domestic employment scenario while advancing in overseas markets. We utilized several secondary data sources including Japanese newspapers and report literature. Results - Previous studies have shown a negative relationship between Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) or offshoring and domestic employment. However, our results showed this relationship with respect to the Japanese manufacturing industry as follows: 1. FDI for developing overseas markets does not decrease domestic production. If Japanese companies change their strategy from exports to overseas production, there will be a consequent decrease in domestic employment of Multinational Enterprises (MNEs). However, the local production that plans the sales expansion of a foreign market does not substitute domestic production. 2. Several case studies illustrate that, as the production of final goods is expanded in foreign countries, there is a corresponding increase in the export of intermediary goods from Japan. In this case, if the production process of Japanese companies is promoted in foreign markets, the amount of exported material and parts from Japan will consequently increase. 3. It is difficult to consider that the establishment of subsidiary companies in foreign countries by manufacturing companies for wholesale, retail, and services decreases domestic employment. This is because the international development of these industries needs expatriates, expatriate training organizations, and research and development (R&D) activities. 4. When there is overseas demand, the growth of local management activities is expected to increase the work of the overseas business department in the head office in Japan, if competitiveness can be secured for better localization and management speed. 5. The conversion of the domestic manufacturing industry into high value-added production is necessary. The relocation of domestic production to foreign markets decreases domestic employment. To prevent this, the upgradation of domestic production bases, including high value-added production, and R&D capability need to be strengthened. Technology-based companies must develop new technology, patents, processes, and so forth, which require extensive human resources for R&D. Conclusions - Domestic medium-sized companies that are capable of consistently supplying high value-added products should be actively encouraged to deploy into and develop overseas markets. Further, this paper considers the necessity of a guidance policy that provides suggestions for overseas deployment, by the initiation of the government, to companies that cannot do so due to the lack of foreign experience or decisions by the CEO, despite having the relevant capability and technologies to supply high value-added products.
This study analyzed the effect of corporate innovation strategies on patent production and ultimately on technological change and new product development of firms in South Korea. The intent was to derive efficient strategies for enhancing technological performance of the firms. For the empirical analysis, three sources of data were combined: four waves of the Human Capital Corporate Panel Survey (HCCP) data collected by the Korea Research Institute for Vocational Education and Training (KRIVET), corporate financial data obtained from the Korea Information Service (KIS), and corporate patent data provided by the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO). The patent production function was estimated by zero-inflated negative binomial (ZINB) regression. The technological performance function was estimated by two-stage regression, taking into account the endogeneity of patent production. An ordered logit model was applied for the second stage regression. Empirical results confirmed the critical role of corporate innovation strategies in patent production and in facilitating technological change and new product development of the firms. In patent production, the firms' R&D investment and human resources were key determinants. Higher R&D intensity led to more patents, yet with decreasing marginal productivity. A larger stock of registered patents also led to a larger flow of new patent production. Firms were more prolific in patent production when they had high-quality personnel, intensely investing in human resource development, and adopting market-leading or fast-follower strategy as compared to stability strategy. In technological performance, the firms' human resources played a key role in accelerating technological change and new product development. R&D intensity expedited new product development of the firm. Firms adopting market-leading or fast-follower strategy were at an advantage than those with stability strategy in technological performance. Firms prolific in patent production were also advanced in terms of technological change and new product development. However, the nexus between patent production and technological performance measures was substantially reduced when controlling for the endogeneity of patent production. These results suggest that firms need to strengthen the linkage between patent production and technological performance, and take strategies that address each firm's capacities and needs.
As science and technology which the society requires become highly advanced and complicated, the need of so-called Convergence Technology(CovT) is getting more significant. The major developed countries are presenting their own vision and strategies of CovT to take the lead of future society and global economies. In Korea, each ministries and government offices are suggesting their own directions of promoting CovT and supporting the related programs. This paper investigates the overall status of national and international R&D activities related to CovT in order to invigorate the related national R&D programs and maximize their effectiveness. It also purports to realize the growth potential and a ripple effect of CovT, such as new business creation and fulfillment of public needs, so that secure new CovT in an early stage. Based on the analysis of the overall status of national R&D programs, we redefine and re-categorize the CovT, which is especially oriented to the development of government support policy, and present the customized strategies to each categories.

As country try expand R&D investment and enhance its efficiency to improve the national competitiveness, research is needed to conduct qualitative enhancement and derive progressive future strategy in relation to the academic information distribution project in scientific technology field. In this study, BSC-based performance indicators were applied to an institute that is the representative of domestic academic information distribution institutes in the field of scientific technology to evaluate project performance, and then to analyze portfolio of using such evaluation results. As for the items of evaluation for the performance indicators of academic information distribution project in the scientific technology field, 12 items that includes information resource quality, information service quality, user satisfaction and economically useful value of academic information from four(4) viewpoints such as information resource, information service, user and economic viewpoints. In the portfolio analysis, it was conducted by performance indicators and by elements of the individual performance indicators as well. Based on the results of performance evaluation and portfolio analysis, the improvement method by viewpoints on academic information distribution project of an institute was suggested.
