국내진출 해외기업들의 R&D관련 투자규모 결정요인에 관한 연구 (A Study on Determinant Factors of Foreign Firm's R&D Investment Scale in Korean Market)

  • Globalization of R&D activities of multinational firms is becoming important in compared with the past, because of increasing globalization of world economy. So, every country tries to attract foreign investment including R&D activities. In this paper, effects of several factors, which determine the scale of foreign subsidiary's R&D activities in local market, are analyzed. Through the review of previous literature, I found that three groups of determinant factors. The first one is the factor which is related to characteristics of local market, such as competitive situation of local market, accessability to research institutions, etc. The second group is the factor which is related to relationship between foreign subsidiary and its mother company. The dominant factors of this group are operation strategy of foreign subsidiary, competitiveness of mother firm, and equity structure of foreign subsidiary. Finally the characteristics of industry affect to the scale of foreign subsidiary's R&D activities. Among these factors, 6 factors are chosen to investigate empirically. For the empirical investigation, 107 foreign subsidiaries among KOITA(Korea Industrial Technology Association)'s list are chosen. Each subsidiary has more than 50% of foreign equity and implement R&D activities in Korea. The results show that sales volume of foreign subsidiary is dominant influencing factor in determining scale of R&D activities in Korean market. And also I found that currently established firms are implementing more R&D activities than old established firms. This is quite interesting finding. However, R&D activities of foreign subsidiary are not vitalized in Korean market. It probably means that Korean government and Korean business partners have to make effort to enhance foreign firms/ R&D activities, because it could contribute technological and economic development of Korean market.

중국 공기업의 세계화 영향 요인에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Influencing Factors of Globalization of Chinese Public Enterprises)

  • 본 연구는 중국 공기업의 세계화에 영향을 미치는 주요 요인을 실증분석한다. 선행연구를 바탕으로 초국적지수를 종속변수로 수출세 환급, 환율, 인적자원, 혁신능력, 자산운용능력, 대출능력, 기업발전단계, 글로벌 전개능력 등을 독립변수로 하는 회귀분석을 수행하였다. 실증분석 결과 수출환급금(E_tax)과 환율(E_rate)이 세계화의 외부영향요인에 통계적으로 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 인적자원역량(Edu, O_hunan), 혁신역량(R&D), 자금조달역량(Finance)은 공기업의 세계화를 위한 중요한 내부영향요인으로 나타났다. 공기업 전략수립에 있어 정부의 역할은 지도하는 수준에서 유지되어야 하며, 정부의 역할이 정부의 강제적인 관리 및 감독기능과 분리되어 공기업의 자율성이 제한되지 않도록 하여야 한다.

기업간 네트워크와 산업집적지의 성장특성 -한국 컴퓨터산업을 사례로- (Spatial Chracteristics of the Inter-firm Networks in the Industrial Clusters in Seoul : Focus on Computer Industry)

  • This paper investigates the spatial characteristics of networks, which arise as a firm's strategy to enhance its competitiveness to cope with the changing economic environments characterized by technological changes and increasing competitiveness. The theoretical framework in this study proposes that networks emerge as a firm's strategies to promote its competitiveness through the vertical/horizontal disintegration of the production system. Futhermore, regional industries of networks. The study examines the types of cooperation and the spatial boundary of the computer industry networks in Korea. Questionnaire survey was conducted on 1, 128 computer companies which had more than 10 employees, with 126 questionnaires being used for analysis. In addition, newpaper articles were used to supplement the foregoing work on network characteristics. The review of these articles covers the period from Jan. 1994 to June 1996. Major findings of this study are as follows: The spatial range of cooperative networks varies according to the specific characters of cooperation(R & D, production, and seles). Intralocal networks are being developed in Kangnam and Youido area, the computer industry agglomeration clusres of Seoul. There are the regional differnces in the agents and contents of cooperation. In intra-national R & D and production networks, regional differnces in agglomeratins and non-agglomerations are not detercted. Most networks of this type are found between large firms and small firms. In contrast, foregn R & D and production networks, which are operated mostly by large firms, are found in Kangnam, Youido, and CBD. Intra-national and foreign productino networks are also focused in Kangnam, Youido, and CBD. Small firms are playing an active role in making this type of cooperation possible. In the perspective of localization-globalization, Korean computer industry can be analyzed in two respects: industrial and regional. The localization of small firms and the localization-globalization of large firms' networks are being developed in industrial contexts, while the localization-globalization of agglomerations and the localization of non-agglomerations networks are being developed in regional contexts. As networks for the localization-globalization of industry are growing in agglomerations, interfirm networks could be related to trends in the formation or intensification of industrial agglomerations. industrial agglomeration areas function as a facilitator of localization through subcontracts, intraregional network and interregional network. They also facilitate globalization via foregn networks. In non-agglomeratin areas, localization networks, which are connected with agglomeration areas via subcontracting, interregional R & D. or production cooperation.

A Decade of the National Institute for Materials Science as an Independent Administrative Institution

  • In April 2001, many Japanese national institutes were reorganized as Independent Administrative Institutions (IAI) based on the General Act for Independent Administrative Institutions and the act for each institution. Under the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) was established by the merger of the National Research Institute for Metals (NRIM) and the National Institute for Research in Inorganic Materials (NIRIM). One of the biggest changes was the expansion of autonomous administration. The nanotechnology and material R&D field was prioritized in the 2nd (2001-2005) and the 3rd (2006-2010) Science and Technology Basic Plans; subsequently, NIMS was assigned to take the initiative in nanotechnology as well as materials science. NIMS has proactively expanded research fields through the introduction of researchers from polymers, electronics, and biotechnology as well as member institutes of the World Materials Research Institute Forum (WMRIF). Globalization has been promoted through programs that include the International Center for Young Scientists (ICYS) and the International Center for Materials Nanoarchitectonics (MANA). The 4th Science and Technology Basic Plan (2011-2015) emphasizes outcomes-recovery and rebirth from the disaster, green innovation, and life innovation. The Midterm Plan for NIMS also follows it. R&D collaboration by multi-partners (that include industry, university, and GRI) should be strategically promoted where GRI are especially required to play a hub function for innovative R&D and open innovation. NIMS highlights are Tsukuba Innovation Arena (TIA) and the Nanotechnology Platform Project. On January 20, 2012, a new organization was decided on by the Japanese Government where several IAI from different science and technology areas will be merged to realize more effective R&D as well as administrative cost reductions. NIMS is also supposed to be merged with 4 other R&D IAI under MEXT by the end of 2013.

우리나라 제조업에서 무역자유화가 성장 및 양극화에 미치는 영향: 미시자료를 통한 실증적 증거들 (Trade Liberalization, Growth, and Bi-polarization in Korean Manufacturing: Evidence from Microdata)

  • 본 논문은 세계화가 우리나라 제조업 사업체의 성장과 양극화에 미친 영향을 살펴본 것이다. 본 논문은 먼저 이론적으로 세계화가 성장 및 양극화에 미치는 영향 및 그 구체적 메커니즘을 최근 이질적 기업의 무역이론들을 중심으로 논의하고, 나아가 관련 실증적 증거들이 존재하는지를 살펴보았다. 이를 통하여 본 논문은 세계화가 1990년대 이후 우리나라 제조업 사업체의 생산성 향상뿐 아니라 기업 간 생산성 및 숙련도별 임금 양극화 모두를 초래한 공통적 원인으로 작용하였음을 보여주었다. 본 연구는 최근 세계화된 경제환경하에서 왜 극소수의 대기업만이 특출한 성과를 나타내고 있는지를 이해하는 데 도움이 된다. 마지막으로 본 연구는 세계화의 부작용을 줄이고 그 편익을 보다 많은 기업들이 누릴 수 있도록 하기 위한 정책방향을 제시한다.

다국적기업의 R&D 이전에 관한 한·중 비교연구 (A Comparative Study of R&D Transfer by Multinational Corporations between Korea and China)

  • 다국적기업은 새로운 제조 및 기술을 협업에 의해 개발하기 위하여 점차로 전 세계에 걸쳐 연구개발(R&D)센터를 설치하고 있다. 이러한 범세계적인 현상은 기업의 글로벌 전략과 맞물려 신흥 공업국을 포함하는 추세다. 이는 다국적기업의 전략과 신흥공업국의 개발전략 양자에 있어 더욱 더 그 중요성이 커지고 있다. 본 연구에서는 다국적기업의 R&D이전에 따른 운영활동의 구체적인 요인들을 살펴보고 다국적기업들이 다른 국가에 비해 R&D센터 설립을 선호하는 중국과 한국에서의 R&D센터 운영을 둘러싼 각 요인을 비교 분석한다. 본 연구에서는 다국적기업의 R&D이전과 관련된 8가지 차원을 통하여 특히 입지결정 요인, 시장특성, 정부의 지원정책, R&D네트워킹에 있어 중국과 한국이 큰 차이를 보이고 있음을 밝혀냈다. 또한 다국적기업의 R&D센터 운영과 관련하여 한국보다는 중국이 긍정적인 요인이 많은 것도 비교연구로 나타났다. 본 연구의 결과는 다국적기업의 R&D센터 운영자들과 한국의 다국적기업의 유치와 관련된 정책결정자들에게 많은 시사점을 제공 할 수 있을 것이다.

자원기반이론과 제도화이론에 기초한 연구개발집단의 지식경영 연구모형 (A Model for Studying Knowledge Management of R&D Groups Based on Resource-Based Theories and Institutionalization Theories)

  • In recent years, knowledge has emerged as a major source of competitive advantage due to the continuous development of information and communication technology, the acceleration of globalization, and the entry into knowledge-based society. Thus interests in knowledge management have been increased significantly. Nevertheless theoretical backgrounds of knowledge management are not actively discussed. Studies on the knowledge management of R&D groups initiating knowledge creation and sharing are not actively conducted either. This study, therfore, provides a research model of knowledge management to investigate relationships among resource and institutional characteristics, knowledge management activities, and knowledge management performance of R&D groups based on knowledge-based theories and institutionalization theories. This study further offers research propositions inherent in the model.
