CNT FEDs with Electron Focusing Structure for HDTV Application

  • In this study, the field emission display with carbon nanotube emitter is developed for the large size HDTV application. Two structures for electron beam focusing are developed on the typical top-gate cathode. The metal grid and focusing gate structure are proved to be effective for the focusing. The data switching voltage for the double gate structure is lower than 30V which is competitive value in respect of the cost for driver electronics. The brightness and color gamut are comparable to those of the commercial product such as CRT.

  • A structure and a design of device were developed to fabricate large-scale active matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) display with good color purity and high aperture ratio. With these technologies, we developed a full color 14.1 inch WXGA AMOLED display. For the integration of OLED on an active matrix a-Si TFT backplane, an efficient top emission OLED is essential since the TFT circuitry covers a large position of the pixel aperture. These technologies will enable up the OLED applications to larger size displays such as desktop monitors and TVs.

  • The world largest 21.3" LTPS LCD has been successfully developed using SLS crystallization technology. Integration of gate circuit, transmission gate and level shifter was successfully performed in a large area display. Uniform and high performance of high quality grains of SLS technology make it possible to realize a uniform large size LTPS TFT-LCD with half the number of data driver IC's that is typically used in a-Si LCD. High aperture ratio of 65 % was achieved using an organic inter insulating method which lead to a high brightness of 500 cd/$cm^2$.

  • We have succeeded in producing the world $1^{st}$ TFT LCD panel adapting the data line sharing method. In the data line sharing structure, two neighboring pixels share one data line. We also adapted time shared data driving with a-Si TFT based circuit integration technology of LG Display's own. By using these technologies, we can reduce the number of source driver ICs by half, compared to that of the existing gate driver integrated TFT LCD panel.

  • A new flexible TFT backplane structure with improved mechanical reliability is proposed. Amorphous indium-gallium-zinc-oxide (a-IGZO) thin film transistors based on this structure have been fabricated on a polyimide substrate, and the resultant mechanical durability has been evaluated in a cyclic bending test. The panel can withstand 10,000 bending cycles at a bending radius of 5 mm without any noticeable TFT degradation. After 10K bending cycles, the change of threshold voltage, mobility, sub-threshold slope, and gate leakage current were only -0.22V, -0.13$cm^2$/V-s, -0.05V/decade, and $-3.05{\times}10^{-13}A$, respectively.

  • a-IGZO is an attractive material to make an AMOLED device with uniform TFT properties for use in a large size display. However, this material shows TFT properties that are very sensitive to water or hydrogen. Therefore, it is essential to control these critical factors during fabrication of the backplane in order to improve the TFT performance. In this paper, we report the effect of passivation layer properties on the performance of the oxide TFTs.

  • A 2.8 inch fully integrated SOP employing a high performance LTPS CMOS TFT technology has been developed for mobile display applications. The LCD module is directly interfaced with 3V 6-bit RGB source via timing control circuitry. The integrated data driver comprises a 6-bit hybrid type DAC with low power analog buffer.

  • Resilient pads play a major role in reducing the impact of loads on a rail in a rail-fastening system, which is essentially used for a concrete track. Although a compression set test is commonly used to measure the durability of a resilient pad, the static spring constant is often observed to be different from the fatigue test. In this study, a modified compression set test method was proposed to monitor the variations in the compression set and static spring constant of a resilient pad with respect to temperature and time. In addition, the life of the resilient pad was predicted by performing an acceleration test based on the Arrhenius equation.
