  • Active queue management (AQM) refers to a family of packet dropping mechanisms for router queues that has been proposed to support end-to-end congestion control mechanisms in the Internet. The proposed AQM algorithm by the IETF is Random Early Detection (RED). The RED algorithm allows network operators simultaneously to achieve high throughput and low average delay. However. the resulting average queue length is quite sensitive to the level of congestion. In this paper, we propose the Refined Adaptive RED(RARED), as a solution for reducing the sensitivity to parameters that affect RED performance. Based on simulations, we observe that the RARED scheme improves overall performance of the network. In particular, the RARED scheme reduces packet drop rate and improves goodput.

  • Active queue management (AQM) is a leading congestion control system, which can keep smaller queuing delay, less packet loss with better network utilization and throughput by intentionally dropping the packets at the intermediate hubs in TCP/IP (transmission control protocol/Internet protocol) networks. To accelerate the responsiveness of AQM framework, proportional-integral-differential (PID) controllers are utilized. In spite of its simplicity, it can effectively take care of a range of complex problems; however it is a lot complicated to track down optimal PID parameters with conventional procedures. A few new strategies have been grown as of late to adjust the PID controller parameters. Therefore, in this paper, we have developed a Squirrel search based PID controller to dynamically find its controller gain parameters for AQM. The controller gain parameters are decided based on minimizing the integrated-absolute error (IAE) in order to ensure less packet loss, high link utilization and a stable queue length in favor of TCP networks.

  • This study aims to develop a mainline metering strategy considering queue imbalance among lanes that can reduce congestion at a toll plaza section by managing queue caused by mainline metering. The suggested strategy considers simultaneously optimizing the number of cars in merging area and managing queue by lane. This study analyzes the effectiveness of the strategy with respect to the average travel time and the occurrence rate of spillback using the PARAMICS. The results show that the suggested strategy has an effect on reducing congestion and improving operation efficiency at toll plaza. In particular, the congestion become more intensified when the length of waiting space is shorter; however, this study shows that the suggested strategy can relieve the congestion in that condition.

  • This research suggested a new real-time traffic signal control algorithm using fusion data of the travel time and the occupancy rate. This research applied the travel time data of traffic information system to traffic signal operation, and developed the signal control process using the degree of saturation that was estimated from the travel time data. This algorithm estimates a queue length from the travel time based on a deterministic delay model, and includes the process to change from the queue length to the degree of saturation. In addition, this model can calculate the traffic signal timings using fusion data of the travel time and the occupancy rate based on the saturation degree. The micro simulation analysis was conducted for effectiveness evaluation. We checked that the average delay decreased by up to 27 percent. In addition, we checked that this signal control algorithm could respond to a traffic condition of oversaturation and detector breakdown effectively and usefully. This research has important contribution to apply the traffic information system to traffic signal operation sectors.

  • Many urban cities deployed ITS technologies to improve the efficiency of traffic operation and management including a real-time franc control system (i.e., COSMOS). The system adopted loop detector system to collect traffic information such as volume, occupancy time, degree of saturation, and queue length. This paper investigated the applicability of detector information within COSMOS to represent the congestion level of the links. Initially, link travel times obtained from the field study were related with each of detector information. Results showed that queue length was highly correlated with link travel time, and direct link travel time estimation using the spot speed data produced high estimation error rates. From this analysis, a procedure was proposed to estimate congestion level of the links using both degree of saturation and queue length information.

  • The virus throttling technique[5,6] is the one of well-known worm early technique. Virus throttling reduce the worm propagration by delaying connection packets artificially. However the worm detection time is not sufficiently fast as expected when the worm generated worm packets at a low rate. This is because the virus throttling technique use only delay queue length. In this paper we use the trend of weighted average delay queue length (TW AQL). By using TW AQL, the worm detection time is not only shorten at a low rate Internet worm, but also the false alarm does not largely increase. By experiment, we also proved our proposed algorithm had better performance.

  • The state of channel between two or more wireless terminals is changed frequently due to noise or multiple environmental conditions in wireless network. In this paper, we analyze packet transmission time and queue length in a time-varying channel of packet based Wireless Networks. To reflect the feature of the time-varying channel, we model the channel as two-state Markov model and three-state Markov model Which are transformed to SFG(Signal Flow Graph) model, and then the distribution of the packet transmission can be modeled as Gaussian distribution. If the packet is arrived with Poisson distribution, then the packet transmission system is modeled as M/G/1. The average transmission time and the average queue length are analyzed in the time-varying channel, and are verified with some simulations.

  • In this research, a model was developed for estimating the queue length of vehicles, based on occupancy time of each vehicle collected by loop detectors which were setup at the upstream of urban street. The estimation model suggestes a method which minimizes architectural effects of the street, such as existence of pedestrian crossing, for future applications to the field. The estimation model suggested in this research was established based on real traffic data collected at up-stream detectors in Kangnam Subway station, Seoul, and the formula of the model is based on Multi-Polynomial equations. Consequence of the experiments showed that the model can adequately and in real-time mode measure length of the queue which were constructed at the 80 to 90 meters away from the upstream detectors. The estimation accuracy of the model was verified in statistical analysis conducted by regressing analysis and test results in real traffic situation.

  • Under unsaturated capacity conditions with balanced approach flows, roundabout gives less delay and queue length than existing signalized intersections; however, over capacity conditions with unbalanced approach flows(flow above 450 pcu/h/lane), roundabouts efficiency drops due to the short gap between entering vehicles and circulating vehicles. This study provides a roundabout Signal Metering transfer standard and operation method. In this study, a four-way-approach with one-lane roundabout is selected to compare the Signal Metering performance for the case of unbalanced flow conditions. The performance is evaluated by using SIDRA software in terms of average delay and queue length. The result shows that the Signal Metering provides substantial improvements for the case of total approach flow is 1,800~2,000 pcu/h in which the main approach flow ratio is 60~70% gives 30~40% less delay and 30~60% less queue length than normal roundabout operation. Also, it is approved that operational performance saving can be achieved when the Metered Approach is selected adjoining to the main approach in pair.
