  • Automated essay grading has been proposed for over thirty years. Only recently have practical implementations been constructed and tested. This paper investigated the role of the nearest-neighbour algorithm within the information retrieval as a way of grading the essay automatically called Automated Essay Grading System. It intended to offer teachers an individualized assistance in grading the student\`s essay. The system involved several processes, which are the indexing, the structuring of the model answer and the grade processing. The indexing process comprised the document indexing and query processing which are mainly used for representing the documents and the query. Structuring the model answer is actually preparing the marking scheme and the grade processing is the process of assessing the essay. To test the effectiveness of the developed algorithms, the algorithms are tested against the History text in Malay. The result showed that th information retrieval and the nearest-neighbour algorithm are practical combination that offer acceptable performance for grading the essay.

  • In this paper, we present an object-based modeling and language for an object-oriented spatio-temporal database system. For handling the structure of spatio-temporal objects and the spatio-temporal operators, we propose the two layers of data modeling: a spatio-temporal object model (STOM) and an spatio_temporal internal description model (STIM). We then propose STOQL, a spatio-temporal object-oriented query language. STOQL provides an integrated mechanism for the graphical display of spatial objects and the retrieval of spatio-temporal and aspatial objects.

  • This paper proposes a basic framework of tight management of the group membership for Internet Multicast applications. At first, this paper describes and summary requirements for group management in multicast applications. So, tile framework model is designed to support the requirements. In the framework model, the CM (Croup Manage.) plays a main .ole. The CM has the four functionality: group creation, group announce, group query, group enroll, and group notification. Consequently, the proposed framework should support the new protocol for group management.

  • In this paper, we propose a query expansion method based on word graphs using pseudo-relevant and pseudo non-relevant documents to achieve performance improvement in information retrieval. The initially retrieved documents are classified into a core cluster when a document includes core query terms extracted by query term combinations and the degree of query term proximity. Otherwise, documents are classified into a non-core cluster. The documents that belong to a core query cluster can be seen as pseudo-relevant documents, and the documents that belong to a non-core cluster can be seen as pseudo non-relevant documents. Each cluster is represented as a graph which has nodes and edges. Each node represents a term and each edge represents proximity between the term and a query term. The term weight is calculated by subtracting the term weight in the non-core cluster graph from the term weight in the core cluster graph. It means that a term with a high weight in a non-core cluster graph should not be considered as an expanded term. Expansion terms are selected according to the term weights. Experimental results on TREC WT10g test collection show that the proposed method achieves 9.4% improvement over the language model in mean average precision.

  • This paper is on query processing in the mobile devices where memory capacity is limited. In case that a query against a large volume of XML data is processed in such a mobile device, techniques of fragmenting the XML data into chunks and of streaming and processing them are required. Such techniques make it possible to process queries without materializing the XML data in its entirety. The previous schemes such as XFrag[4], XFPro[5], XFLab[6] are not scalable with respect to the increase of the size of the XML data because they lack proper memory management capability. After some information on XML fragments necessary for query processing is stored, it is not deleted even after it becomes of no use. As such, when the XML fragments are dynamically generated and infinitely streamed, there could be no guarantee of normal completion of query processing. In this paper, we address scalability of query processing over dynamic XML fragment stream, proposing techniques of deleting information on XML fragments accumulated during query processing in order to extend the previous schemes. The performance experiments through implementation showed that our extended schemes considerably outperformed the previous ones in memory efficiency and scalability with respect to the size of the XML data.

  • Many researches are going on with regard to issues and problems related to mobile database systems, which are caused by the weak connectivity of wireless networks, the mobility and the portability of mobile clients. Mobile computing satisfies user's demands for convenience and performance to use information at any time and in any place, but it has many problems to be solved in the aspect of data management. The purpose of our study is to design Mobile Continuous Query Processing System(MCQPS) to solve problems related to database hoarding, the maintenance of shared data consistency and the optimization of logging, which are caused by the weak connectivity and disconnection of wireless networks inherent in mobile database systems under mobile client server environments. We proved the superiority of the proposed MCQPS by comparing its performance to the C I S(Client-Intercept-Slaver) model. In Addition, we experiment on proposed index structure and methodology in various methods.

  • Stream data need a efficient data management with high reliability and real time processing. The characteristics of these data are a large volume, a short report interval and asynchronous report time. The typical queries of these systems consist of the current query to search the latest signal value, the snapshot query to search the signal value of a past time, the historical query to search the signal value of a past time to current. This paper proposes the efficient method to manage the above signals by using a file structured database in QNX operating systems. The query model to accommodate various query for stream data is proposed. The proposed methods are applied to reactive protection system to verify their usefulness. The COM(Cabinet Operator Module) based on the QNX employs file database that adopts a delta version and a buffering method for the resource limit of a small storage and a low computing power.

  • The improved DFSA for 2.4GHz multi-tags active RFID is suggested in 2 different ways: 1) simplified tag collection and Ack procedure using query command and 2) modified Schoute's method to control the number of slots in the frame. To evaluate the performance of the improved system we develop the simulation model. Varying the number of tags in the system we track the performance measures such as throughput, recognition time for multi-tags and tag recognition rate during a given time. The suggested method shows the best performance over all measures. Simplification of collection and Ack commands using query commands contributes to reducing tag recognition time. And the modified Schoute's method which controls the frame size using $k_1$ and $k_2$ contributes to throughput improvement and reduces target cognition time by reducing the number of collection rounds.

  • Relational databases have a notion of normalization, in which the model for storing data is standardized according to the organization's business processes or data operations. However, the graph database is relatively early in this standardization and has a high degree of freedom in modeling. Therefore various models can be created with the same data, depending on the database designers. The essences of the graph database are two aspects. First, the graph database allows accessing relationships between the objects semantically. Second, it makes relationships between entities as important as individual data. Thus increasing the degree of freedom in modeling and providing the modeling developers with a more creative system. This paper introduces different graph models with test data. It compares the query performances by the results of response speeds to the query executions per graph model to find out how the efficiency of each model can be maximized.
