We performed a numerical simulation based on the two-dimensional (2-D) unsteady Euler's equation with a single-step Arrhenius reaction model in order to investigate the detonation wave front propagation of an Argon (Ar) diluted oxy-hydrogen mixture ($2H_2+O_2+12Ar$). This simulation operates in the detonation frame of reference. We examine the effect of grid size and the performance impact of integrated quantities such as mass flow. For a given set of baseline conditions, the minimal and maximum grid resolutions required to simulate the respective detonation waves and the detonation cell structures are determined. Tertiary shock wave behavior for various grids and pre-exponential factors are analyzed. We found that particle fluctuation can be weakened by controlling the mass flow going through the oblique shock waves.
The use of LPG as clean fuel for Diesel engine is very attractive way to reduce soot and NOx emission. In this study, a numerical study has been done to know the transient behavior of LPG fuel in chamber pressures which is held at a pressure above (0.37MPa)and below(0.15MPa)the fuel vapor pressure. Results show that the vortex formed within the start of injection at the leading edge of the spray cone and was most apparent for 0.15MPa chamber pressure case. The high speed photographs and model results showed a narrower cone angle during the quasi-steady spray period at the 0.37MPa chamber pressure compared to the 0.15MPa case. And it can be shown that more realistic vaporization process is necessary to predict the spray length well.

In this paper, we proposes an adaptive flux observer to estimate initial values of rotor fluxes and unknown rotor resistance. The error system between the model of induction motor and a proposed observer is devided as a fast subsystem and a slow one by a singular perturbation system. The fast subsystem is exponentially convergent on a boundary-layer. And the overall error system is reduced to a quasi-steady-state system. The adaptive law for an unknown rotor resistance is designed to stabilize the approximate error system. As computer simulation results show, the proposed adaptive flux observer estimates fast initial values of rotor fluxes and unknown rotor resistance.

The static aeroelastic analysis of composite hingeless rotor blades in hover was performed using free-wake method. Large deflection beam theory was applied to analyze blade motions as a one-dimension beam. Anisotropic beam theory was applied to perform a cross-sectional analysis for composite rotor blades. Aerodynamic loads were calculated through a three-dimensional aerodynamic model which is based on the unsteady vortex lattice method. The wake geometry in hover was described using a time-marching free-wake method. Numerical results of the steady-state deflections for the composite hingeless rotor blades were presented and compared with those results based on two-dimensional quasi-steady strip theory and prescribed wake method. It was shown that wakes affect the steady-state deflections.

Helicopters and rotary-wing vehicles encounter a wide variety of complex aerodynamic phenomena and these phenomena present substantial challenges for computational fluid dynamics(CFD) models. This investigation presents the rotor aerodynamic analysis items for the helicopter development and variety aerodynamic analysis methods to provide the better solution to researchers and helicopter developers between aerodynamic problems and numerical aerodynamic analysis methods. The numerical methods to make an analysis of helicopter rotor are as below - CFD Modelling : actuator disk model, BET model, fully rotor model,... - Grid : sliding mesh, chimera mesh / structure mesh, unstructure mesh,... - etc. : panel method periodic boundary, quasi-steady simulation, incompressible,... The choice of CFD methodology and the numerical resolution for the overall problem have been driven mostly by available computer speed and memory at any point in time. The combination of the knowledge of aerodynamic analysis items, available computing power and choice of CFD methods now allows the solution of a number of important rotorcraft aerodynamics design problems.

Snap rolling during hard turning and instability during emergency rising are important features of submarine operation. Hydrodynamics modeling using a high incidence flow angle is required to predict these phenomena. In the present study, a quasi-steady dynamics model of a submarine suitable for high-incidence-angle maneuvering applications is developed. To determine the hydrodynamic coefficients of the model, static tests, dynamic tests, and control surface tests were conducted in a towing tank and wind tunnel. The towing tank test is conducted utilizing a Reynolds number of $3.12{\times}10^6$, and the wind tunnel test is performed utilizing a Reynolds number of $5.11{\times}10^6$. In addition, least squares, golden section search, and surface fitting using polynomial models were used to analyze the experimental results. The obtained coefficients are presented in tabular form and can be used for various purposes such as hard turning simulation, emergency rising simulation, and controller design.

A new measuring method is proposed, which measures the atomization characteristics of a non-evaporating, axi-symmetric diesel spray by means of an image analysis of high speed shadow photographs. The instantaneous sauter mean diameter and the fuel concentration in the spray are calculated of the splay axis and in the radial direction and the data of the fuel injection rate, using an onion peeling model. Some examples of application of this method to eight different diesel sprays are demonstrated, and the results are compared to predicted results by the conventional immersion method and a quasi-steady one dimensional spray model.

This study presents a numerical simulation model of vertical ground heat exchangers, considering unsaturated hydro static ground conditions induced by the ground water table fluctuation. Heat transfer in ground and grout is modeled by a 3-D FEM transient conductive heat transfer model, where heat transfer between circulating fluid and heat exchanging pipe is treated as 1-D quasi steady state forced convective elements. To take into account the unsaturated ground condition, soil thermal conductivity and heat capacity which are dependent on the matric suction are applied to ground elements. Parametric studies considering various ground water table conditions are conducted to investigate the influence of unsaturated hydro static ground condition on the mean heat exchange rate of ground heat exchanger. Simulation results considering water table fluctuation show 60~100% of mean heat exchange rate for a saturated soil condition and 125~208% of that for a dry soil condition. Thus consideration of unsaturated soil condition is substantially recommended for more accurate design and performance evaluation for ground heat exchangers.

The cool-down performance after soaking is very important in an automotive air-conditioning system and is considered as the key design variable. Therefore, understanding of the overall transient characteristics of the system is essential to the preliminary design as well as steady-state characteristics. The objective of this study is to develop a computer simulation model and estimate theoretical1y the transient performance of an automotive air-conditioning system. To accomplish this, a mathematical modelling of each component, such as compressor, condenser, expansion valve, and evaporator, is presented first of all. For a detailed calculation, condenser and evaporator are divided into many subsections. Each sub-section is an elemental volume for modelling. In models of expansion valve and compressor, dynamic behaviors are not considered in an attempt to simplify the ana1ysis, but the quasi-static ones are just considered, such as the relation between mass flow rate and pressure drop in expansion device, polytropic process in compressor, etc. The developed simulation model is validated with a comparison to laboratory test data of an automotive air-conditioning system. The overall time-tracing properties of each component agreed fairly well wish those of test data in this case.
Formation of self-gravitating gas clouds and hence stars in galaxies is a consequence of both thermal and dynamical evolution of a gaseous medium. Using hydrodynamics simulations including cooling and heating explicitly, we follow simultaneously thermal and dynamical evolution of galactic gas disks to study dynamics and structures of galactic spiral shocks with thermal instability and regulation of the star formation rates (SFRs). We first perform one-dimensional simulations in direction perpendicular to spiral arms. The multiphase gas flows across the arm soon achieve a quasi-steady state characterized by transitions from warm to cold phases at the shock and from cold to warm phases in the postshock expansion zone, producing a substantial fraction of intermediate-temperature gas. Next, we allow a vertical degree of freedom to model vertically stratified disks. The shock front experiences unsteady flapping motions, driving a significant amount of random gas motions, and self-gravity promotes formation of bound clouds inside spiral arms. Finally, we include the star formation feedback in both mechanical (due to supernova explosion) and radiative (due to FUV heating by young stars) forms in the absence of spiral arms. At saturation, gravitationally bound clouds form via thermal and gravitational instabilities, which are compensated by disruption via supernova explosions. We find that the FUV heating regulates the SFRs when gas surface density is low, confirming the prediction of the thermal and dynamical equilibrium model of Ostriker et al. (2010) for star formation regulation.
