Effects of interlayer insertion between multi-quantum well and electron blocking layer of green light emitting diode on diode performances were studied by device simulation. Dependence of Mg doping depth on characteristics of current-voltage, emitting wavelength, leakage current, and external quantum efficiency was investigated, and the optimum diode structure was presented. Device structures with interlayers doped in entire region and up to 30 nm showed remarkable reduced leakage current and effectively relieved efficiency droop which is one of the biggest challenges in green light emitting diode. Furthermore, the most improved characteristics in current-voltage and electroluminescence was obtained by the latter structure.

Controlled precipitation of quasi-binary semiconductor system is newly proposed as an effective and reliable technique for the formation of well-defined and crystallographically aligned semiconductor nanostructures. Using HgTe-PbTe quasi-binary semiconductor system, self-aligned HgTe nanocrystallites distributed three dimensionally within PbTe matrix were successfully formed by the simple three step heat treatment process routinely found in age hardening process of metallic alloys. Examination of the resulting nano precipitates using conventional transmission electron microscopy (CTEM) and high resolution TEM (HRTEM) reveals that the coherent HgTe precipitates form as thin discs along the (100) habit planes making a crystallographic relation of {100}$\_$HgTe///{100}$\_$PbTe/ and [100]$\_$HgTe///[100]$\_$PbTe/. It is also found that the precipitate undergoes a gradual thickening and a faceting under isothermal aging up to 500 hours without any noticeable coarsening. These results, combined with the extreme dimension of the precipitates (4-5 nm in length and sub-nanometer in thickness) and the simplicity of the formation process, leads to the conclusion that controlled precipitation is an effective method for preparing desirable quantum-dot nanostructures.
The safety of nuclear power plants is analyzed by a probabilistic risk assessment, and the fault tree analysis is the most widely used method for a risk assessment with the event tree analysis. One of the well-known disadvantages of the fault tree is that drawing a fault tree for a complex system is a very cumbersome task. Thus, several graphical modeling methods have been proposed for the convenient and intuitive modeling of complex systems. In this paper, the reliability graph with general gates (RGGG) method, one of the intuitive graphical modeling methods based on Bayesian networks, is improved for the reliability analyses of dynamic systems that have various operation modes with time. A reliability matrix is proposed and it is explained how to utilize the reliability matrix in the RGGG for various cases of operation mode changes. The proposed RGGG with a reliability matrix provides a convenient and intuitive modeling of various operation modes of complex systems, and can also be utilized with dynamic nodes that analyze the failure sequences of subcomponents. The combinatorial use of a reliability matrix with dynamic nodes is illustrated through an application to a shutdown cooling system in a nuclear power plant.
The fluorescence spectroscopic properties of both trans and cis forms of 9-anthryiethylene derivatives such as 9-AnthCH=$CHCO_2CH_3$ [Ⅰ] and 9-AnthCH=CHCN [Ⅱ] as well as 9-AnthCH=>TEX>$CHCH_2O_2CCH_3$ [Ⅲ] and 9-AnthCH=$CHCH_2OH$ [Ⅳ] have been measured in various solvents. In nonpolar solvent, the trans-I and trans-Ⅱ show dual emission spectral bands at 340 nm and 460 nm when exciting with 270 nm while the other trans derivatives show single emission band at 430 or 460 nm. The dual emissions exhibit different excitation spectra, indicating that two emissive states are different from each other. It is interesting to note that the 340 nm emission of both trans-Ⅰ and trans-Ⅱ is enhanced at the expense of the drastic quenching of the 460 nm emission as the solvent polarity increases. The dual emissions are also observed for both cis-Ⅰ and cis-Ⅱ. The solvent dependence of the fluorescence decay times and quantum yields can be correlated with the solvent and excitation wavelength dependences of the trans→cis photoisomerization quantum yields. These results indicate that the 340 nm emission is originated from the $S_2$ state of the cis-form, and the $S_1$ state is the only singlet excited state presenting a large CT (charge transfer) character to facilitate the photoisomerization.
Irradiation of tert-butyl 9-anthroate and furan through a Uranium glass filter gave the [4+4] cyclodimer (21.8%) of tert-butyl 9-anthroate and furan and the 1,4-10',9' cyclodimer (4.2%) of tert-butyl 9-anthroate as well as the 9,10-10',9' cyclodimer (65.7%) of tert-butyl 9-anthroate. The [4+4] cyclodimer of tert-butyl 9-anthroate and furan was found to be thermally dissociated into their unit components with the activation enthalpy of 35.6 kcal/mole and the activation entropy of 7.6 eu, and photochemically dissociated to produce excited tert-butyl 9-anthroate. Quantum yields for the photodissociation to tert-butyl 9-anthroate and the formation of excited tert-butyl 9-anthroate in cyclohexane at room temperature were determined to be 0.56 and 0.19, respectively. The 1,4-10',9' cyclodimer of tert-butyl 9-anthroate in DMF was thermally dissociated into tert-butyl 9-anthroate with the activation enthalpy of 34.8 kcal/mole and the activation entropy of 16.4 eu. Upon irradiation, the [4+4] cyclodimers of tert-butyl 9-anthroate and the [4+4] cyclodimers of methyl 9-anthroate were quantitatively dissociated. However, no adiabatic photoreversion was observed from any of the cyclodimers. Quantum yields for the photodissociation in cyclohexane at room temperature were measured and compared.
The frustrated magnet has been regarded as a system that could be a promising host material for the quantum spin liquid (QSL). However, it is difficult to determine the spin configuration and the corresponding mechanism in this system, because of its geometrical frustration (i.e., crystal structure and symmetry). Herein, we systematically investigate one of the geometrically frustrated magnets, the $TbB_4$ compound. Using resonant soft x-ray scattering (RSXS), we explored its spin configuration, as well as Tb's quadrupole. Comprehensive evaluations of the temperature and photon energy/polarization dependences of the RSXS signals reveal the mechanism of spin reorientation upon cooling down, which is the sophisticated interplay between the Tb spin and the crystal symmetry rather than its orbit (quadrupole). Our results and their implications would further shed a light on the search for possible realization of QSL.

A new radiation scale is proposed. With empathy toward the vast majority of people who are not well versed in radiation and related matters, and thus suffering from misunderstanding that breeds unnecessary fear of radiation, the aim of proposing a new radiation scale, radiation index (RAIN), is to put the general public at ease with the concept of radiation. RAIN is defined in dimensionless numbers that relate any specific radiation dose to a properly defined reference level. As RAIN is expressed in plain numbers without an attached scientific unit, the public will feel comfortable with its friendly look, which in turn should help them understand radiation dose levels easily and allay their anxieties about radiation. The expanded awareness and proper understanding of radiation will empower the public to feel that they are not hopeless victims of radiation. The correspondence between RAIN and the specific accumulated dose is established. The equivalence will allow RAIN to serve as a common language of communication for the general public with which they can converse with radiation experts to discuss matters related to radiation safety, radiation diagnosis and therapy, nuclear accidents, and other related matters. Such fruitful dialogues will ultimately enhance public acceptance of radiation and associated technologies.
A sub-channel solver, named ${\underline{S}}teady$ and ${\underline{T}}ransient$${\underline{A}}nalyzer$ for ${\underline{R}}eactor$${\underline{T}}hermal$ hydraulics (START), has been developed using the homogenous model for two-phase conditions of light water reactors. The code is developed as a fast and accurate TH-solver for coupled and multi-physics calculations. START has been validated against the NUPEC PWR Sub-channel and Bundle Test (PSBT) database. Tests like single-channel quality and void-fraction for steady state, outlet fluid temperature for steady state, rod-bundle quality and void-fraction for both steady state and transient conditions have been analyzed and compared with experimental values. Results reveal a good accuracy of solution for both steady state and transient scenarios. Axially different values for turbulent mixing coefficient are used based on different grid-spacer types. This provides better results as compared to using a single value of turbulent mixing coefficient. Code-to-code evaluation of PSBT results by the START code compares well with other industrial codes. The START code has been parallelized with the OpenMP algorithm and its numerical performance is evaluated with a large whole PWR core. Scaling study of START shows a good parallel performance.
Background: For proper monitoring of the eye lens dose, an appropriate calibration factor of a dosimeter and information about the mean energies of X-rays are indispensable. The scattered X-ray energy spectra should be well characterized in medical practices where eye lenses of medical staffs might be high. Materials and Methods: Scattered X-ray energy spectra were experimentally derived for three different types of X-ray diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, i.e., the computed tomography (CT) scan, the angiography and the fluoroscopy. A commercially available CdZnTe (CZT) spectrometer with a lead collimator was employed for the measurement of scattered X-rays, which was performed in the usual manner. Results and Discussion: From the obtained energy spectra, the mean energies of the scattered X-rays lied between 40 and 60 keV. This also agreed with that obtained by the conventional half value layer method. Conclusion: The scattered X-rays to which medical workers may be exposed in the region around the eyes were characterized by means of spectrometry. The obtained mean energies of the scattered X-rays were found to match the flat region of the dosimeter response.
Nuclear thermal-hydraulic system analysis codes have been developed to comprehensively model nuclear reactor systems to evaluate the safety of a nuclear reactor system. For analyzing complex systems with finite computational resources, system codes usually solve simplified fluid equations for coarsely discretized control volumes with one-dimensional assumptions and replace source terms in the governing equations with constitutive relations. Wall boiling heat transfer models are regarded as essential models in nuclear safety evaluation among many constitutive relations. The wall boiling heat transfer models of two widely used nuclear system codes, RELAP5 and TRACE, are analyzed in this study. It is first described how wall heat transfer models are composed in the two codes. By utilizing the same method described in Part 1 paper, heat fluxes from the two codes are compared under the same thermal-hydraulic conditions. The significant factors for the differences are identified as well as at which conditions the non-negligible difference occurs. Steady-state simulations with both codes are also conducted to confirm how the difference in wall heat transfer models impacts the simulation results.
