  • This study rigorously examined uncertainty in the TMI-1 benchmark within the Uncertainty Analysis in Modeling (UAM) benchmark suite using the STREAM/RAST-K two-step method. It presents two pivotal advancements in computational techniques: (1) Development of an uncertainty quantification (UQ) module and a specialized library for the pin-based pointwise energy slowing-down method (PSM), and (2) Application of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) for UQ. To evaluate the new computational framework, we conducted verification tests using SCALE 6.2.2. Results demonstrated that STREAM's performance closely matched SCALE 6.2.2, with a negligible uncertainty discrepancy of ±0.0078% in TMI-1 pin cell calculations. To assess the reliability of the PSM covariance library, we performed verification tests, comparing calculations with Calvik's two-term rational approximation (EQ 2-term) covariance library. These calculations included both pin-based and fuel assembly (FA-wise) computations, encompassing hot zero-power and hot full-power operational conditions. The uncertainties calculated using both the EQ 2-term and PSM resonance treatments were consistent, showing a deviation within ±0.054%. Additionally, the data compression process yielded compression ratios of 88.210% and 92.926% for on-the-fly and data-saving approaches, respectively, in TMI fuel assembly calculations. In summary, this study provides a comprehensive explanation of the PCA process used for UQ calculations and offers valuable insights into the robustness and reliability of newly developed computational methods, supported by rigorous verification tests.

  • A practical and effective method of X-ray powder diffraction analysis was investigated for quantitative analysis of the mineral content of natural samples. Sample mounting experiments were conducted to select the best randomly oriented powder sample mount. A comparative experiment was also made between a reference intensity ratio (RIR) method, which compares a single peak intensity with standard material, and the Rietveld method, which calculates a full X-ray diffraction pattern, to search for the effective method of mineral quantification. In addition, samples containing amorphous minerals were quantitatively analyzed by the Rietveld method and the efficiency was reviewed. As a result of the study, the optimal random orientation could be reached by the side mounting method. The Rietveld method using the full pattern of X-ray diffraction was more suitable for mineral quantitative analysis, rather than the RIR method using a specific peak. However, either method could depend on the analyst's experience in addition to analytical technique. Moreover, amorphous minerals can be quantitatively analyzed by the Rietveld method, and the analysis results make the geological analysis possible.

  • A simple and sensitive method for erythromycin quantification by liquid chromatography electrospray mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) in fishery products was developed. Samples were extracted by liquid-liquid extraction using 70% acetonitrile. Lipids were removed by acetonitrile saturated hexane. LC separation was performed on a Shiseido UG C-18 column ($150\;mm{\times}2.0\;mm$ internal diameter.) with a gradient system of 0.2% acetic acid-acetonitrile containing 0.2% acetic acid as a mobile phase at flow rate of 0.2 mL/min. The mass spectrometer was operated in selected reaction monitoring with positive electro-spray interface. Transitions were monitored a m/z $734{\to}577$ and $734{\to}158$, with m/z $734{\to}577$ chosen for quantification. Recovery of erythromycin from fish and shrimp fortified at the 10 ng/mL, 50 ng/mL and 100 ng/mL were 91.6-109.4%, 84.4-111.2% and 98.8-109.6% with high precision, respectively. Limits of quantification and limits of detection of erythromycin in both fish and shrimp were 10.0 ng/mL and 1.0 ng/mL, respectively. This analysis method for erythromycin has been proposed for registration in the Korean Official Methods of Food Analysis and has been utilized for fishery products analysis by the Korea Food and Drug Adminstration and the National Fisheries Products Quality Inspection Service.

  • Rock joint roughness obtained from the camera-type 3D scanner was classified into waviness and unevenness. The classification criteria were established in the previous study; digital filtering was used to distinguish one from another. The classified and original profiles were used to produce metal moulds. For accurate machining of the moulds, the WEDM(Wire-cut Electric Discharge Machining) was adopted. Specimens were cast using high strength gypsum, and joint shear tests were performed by varying normal stress from low value to high one. Roughness mobilization characteristics depending on the asperity scale and the applied normal stress were investigated. A new equation was proposed to predict shear strength of rock joint, which can consider the characteristics of roughness mobilization and roughness parameters. The roughness quantification composed of waviness and unevenness was found to be a useful method to predict the joint shear strength.

  • Background: Maspin expression is a potential prognostic factor for various malignancies but its relation with gallbladder cancer is unknown and needs to be investigated needs to be investigated. We therefore here focused on maspin mRNA expression in normal, gall stone disease and gallbladder cancer subjects, with particular attention to prognostic importance in individuals with malignancies. Materials and Methods: This study was carried out at the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, King George's Medical University, Lucknow, India. Gallbladder samples from normal (n=25), gall stone disease (n=25) and cancer patients (n=38) were analysed for maspin mRNA expression by semi-quantitative reverse transcriptase PCR and quantitative real time PCR. Statistical analysis was carried out using the Students t test or ANOVA. Survival analysis was conducted according to the Kaplan-Meier method and correlations were assessed using the Pearson correlation method. p<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Significant increase (p=0.028) in expression of maspin mRNA was observed in gallbladder cancer as compared to gall stone disease, whereas no expression was found in normal tissues. Significant correlation (Pearson's coefficient(r)=-0.798, p<0.0001) was observed between relative quantification of maspin mRNA and survival of cancer patients after surgery, with significantly shorter (p=0.002) survival in patients having relative quantification >1.5 as compared to those having relative quantification <1.5. Similarly, significant differences in patient survival for maspin mRNA expression was observed for stage II (p=0.025) and III (p=0.011) cancer. Conclusions: Higher expression of maspin mRNA in gallbladder cancer has prognostic significance for stage II and III cancer, which needs to be investigated further.

  • Assay for the detection and quantification of porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV 2) with the real-time PCR were developed. TaqMan probe real-time using a set of primer/probe was developed for detection of PCV 2. In this study we applied real-time PCR assay to 320 samples, collected from pig farms. In 151 of 320 samples, PCV 2 DNA was detected by conventional PCR assay. All samples positive for PCV 2 DNA in conventional PCR assay were also positive in Real-time PCR assay, but 69 of 169 samples that tested negative for PCV 2 DNA in conventional assay were tested positive in TaqMan probe real-time PCR assay. The test of TaqMan probe real-time PCR resulted in detection and quantification limits of 101 copies per sample. TaqMan probe real-time PCR assay increased the number of samples in which PCV 2 was detected by 21%. TaqMan probe real-time PCR assay is very efficient method in contrast to the conventinal PCR, becoming increasingly important method for gene analysis.

  • Tunnel behavior measured by monitoring during construction is a main item for safety evaluation and it depends widely upon local geological characteristics. To assess in this study how much the geological factors influence on tunnel behavior for each RMR factor, a quantification analysis was carried out using tunnel face maps and measurements as explanatory variables and dependent variables, respectively. The results showed that average significance of the influence of RMR factors - R1, R2, R3, R4 and R5, on tunnel displacements are 17.0%, 20.4%, 20.4%, 11.6% and 30.6%, respectively, and this probably indicates that the groundwater condition played a significant role for the tunnel displacement.

  • Since a variety of sound occur in same place and similar sound occurs in other places, the performance of acoustic scene classification is not guaranteed in case of insufficient training data. A Bag of Words (BOW) based histogram feature is foreseen as a method to overcome the problem. However, since the histogram features is made by using a feature distribution, the ordering of sequence of features is ignored. A temporal information such as periodicity and stationarity are also important for acoustic scene classification. In this paper, temporal features about a periodicity and a stationarity are extracted by using a recurrent quantification analysis. In the experiment, performance of the proposed method is shown better than other baseline methods.

  • A simple HPLC quantification method was developed for genistein, genistin, daidzein, and daidzin in soybeans and soybean products. The procedure used a $4.6{\times}100\;mm$ $Chromolith^{(R)}$ RP-18e column with a mobile phase of 1% HOAc in 20% MeOH to 1% HOAc in 80% MeOH for 10 min. The injection volume was $2\;{\mu}L$ at a flow rate of 2 mL/min. Detection was carried out under UV at 254 nm. Under these conditions, the major isoflavones daidzein, daidzin, genistein, and genistin in soybean and soybean pastes were eluted within 7 min with baseline separation. Optimal extraction of the above four major isoflavones was achieved when 40 g of soybean or soybean paste was refluxed in 100 mL of 95% ethanol for 2 hr. Ten different soybean cultivars and nine commercial soybean pastes were analyzed by this method. The total isoflavone content was highest in the cultivar Somyung ($2,497\;{\mu}g/g$ dry weight). The isoflavone content in soybean pastes varied widely from manufacturer to manufacturer (an almost five-fold difference between the highest and lowest values). Such variations were presumably due to differences in fermentation conditions, type of soybeans used, and levels of such additives as starch and salt.

  • This paper analyzes the film in a quantitative method to understand the principle to assign film's narrative as an art form. To do this, we tried to quantify 'conflict', which is a key factor of narrative, according to measuring the information represented in images. And thus, we measured the face areas of Protagonist and Antagonist, and then analyzed the relationship between area and conflict. The reason why the face area is used as the measurement target is because it is an index showing the way in which the director represents the conflict in the film. The quantification of conflict in films can be applied to indexing the narrative structure or specific conflict sections based on objective figures. In addition, it is possible to visualize narrative through conflict graphs, and it is meaningful that the computational criticism can apply into narrative study by quantification of conflict.
