In Korean context, the innovative cities imply new towns or urban clusters in the Non Capital Regions, all of which would accommodate the relocated Capital based public organizations. The central government-initiated innovative cities have provoked pros and cons towards their effectiveness and efficacy for the balanced territorial development. From a broader prospective, this paper firstly examines the current status quo of the innovative cities. Based on their master plans, it analyzes physical and non physical factors which would exert significant impact on the innovative cities. Secondly, it pays attention to how key factors strengthen or weaken their behavioral patterns in terms of dynamic location and implementation policies of the innovative cities. Using System dynamics approaches, it sets up couples of scenarios, categorizing between supporting and opposing arguments towards the innovative cities. Lastly, after divulging systematic structure of the innovative cities, it proposes a series of practical alternatives which would contribute to minimizing unexpected side effects or unwanted social cost in the long run. In order to guarantee reinforcing structure of the innovative cities, the paper suggests that QOL (quality of life) variables, which would require continuous investment in the social infrastructure, are pivotal in achieving original goals of the innovative cities. Otherwise, the innovative cities would not be innovative per se. In the worst case, they might be degraded into the unpopular ghost towns.
This paper presents an improved identification algorithm of active magnetic bearing rotor systems considering sensor and actuator dynamics. An AMB rotor system has both real and complex poles so that it is very hard to identify them together. In previous research, a linear transformation through a fictitious proportional feedback was used in order to shift the real poles close to the imaginary axis. However, the identification result highly depends on the fictitious feedback gain, and it is not easy to identify the additional dynamics including sensor and actuators at the same time. First, this paper discusses the necessity and a selection criterion of the fictitious feedback gain. An appropriate feedback gain minimizes dominant SVD(Singular Value Decomposition) error through maximizing rank deficiency. Second, more improvement in the identification is achieved through separating the common additional dynamics in all elements of frequency response matrix. The feasibility of the proposed identification algorithm is proved with two theoretical AMB rotor models. Finally, the proposed scheme is compared with previous identification methods using experimental data, and a great improvement in model quality and large amount of time saving can be achieved with the proposed method.
The intent of this study is to develop system dynamics model for assessment of organizational and human factors in nuclear power plant which can contribute to secure the nuclear safety. Previous studies are classified into two major approaches. One is engineering approach such as ergonomics and probability safety assessment(PSA). The other is social science approach such like sociology, organization theory and psychology. Both have contributed to find organization and human factors and to present guideline to lessen human error in NPP. But, since these methodologies assume that relationship among factors is independent they don't explain the interactions among factors or variables in NPP. To overcome these limits, we have developed system dynamics model which can show cause and effect among factors and quantify organizational and human factors. The model we developed is composed of 16 functions of job process in nuclear power, and shows interactions among various factors which affects employees' productivity and job quality. Handling variables such like degree of leadership, adjustment of number of employee, and workload in each department, users can simulate various situations in nuclear power plant in the organization side. Through simulation, user can get insight to improve safety in plants and to find managerial tools in the organization and human side. Analyzing pattern of variables, users can get knowledge of their organization structure, and understand stands of other departments or employees. Ultimately they can build learning organization to secure optimal safety in nuclear power plant.
Algal blooms in lakes are one of major environmental issues in Korea. A three-dimensional, hydrodynamic and water quality model was developed and tested in Lake Euiam to assess the performance and limitations of numerical modeling with multiple algal groups using field data commonly collected for algal management. In this study, EFDC was adopted as the basic model framework. Simulated vertical profiles of water temperature, dissolved oxygen and nutrients monitored at five water quality monitoring stations from March to October 2013, which are closely related to algal dynamics simulation, showed good agreement with those of observed data. The overall spatio-temporal variations of three algal groups were reasonably simulated against the chlorophyll-a levels of those estimated from the limited monitoring data (chlorophyll-a level and cell numbers of algal species) with the RMSEs ranging from 2.6 to $17.5mg/m^3$. Also, note that $PO_4-P$ level in the water column was a key limiting factor controlling the growth of three algal groups during most of simulation period. However, the algal modeling results were not fully attainable to the levels of observation during short periods of time showing abrupt increase in algae throughout the lake. In particular, the green algae/cyanobacteria and diatom simulations were underestimated in late June to early July and early October, respectively. The results shows that better understanding of internal algal processes, neglected in most algal modeling studies, is necessary to predict the sudden algal blooms more accurately because the concentrations of external $PO_4-P$ and specific algal groups originated from the tributaries (mainly, dam water releases) during the periods were too low to fully capture the sharp rise of internal algal levels. In this respect, this study suggests that future modeling efforts should be focused on the quantification of internal cycling processes including vertical movement of algal species with respect to changes in environmental conditions to enhance the modeling performance on complex algal dynamics.

In this paper, 3-dimensional numerical model of an escalator is developed to study the vibration characteristics. This proposed model is able to consider the elastic deformation of the frame during transient dynamic analysis. Deformation modes which are used to calculate the elastic deformation are selected from the FE model analysis. Because low frequency vibration is very important to the ride quality of fore/aft direction, low frequency deformation modes of the frame below 20Hz are considered. To show validity of this dynamics model, longitudinal acceleration of a step is compared with test data in frequency domain. Then robust design technique is applied to determine important design factors and improve ride quality with small number of experiments.
Mitochondrial quality control systems are essential for the maintenance of functional mitochondria. At the organelle level, they include mitochondrial biogenesis, fusion and fission, to compensate for mitochondrial function, and mitophagy, for degrading damaged mitochondria. Specifically, in mitophagy, the target mitochondria are recognized by the autophagosomes and delivered to the lysosome for degradation. In this review, we describe the mechanisms of mitophagy and the factors that play an important role in this process. In particular, we focus on the roles of mitophagy adapters and receptors in the recognition of damaged mitochondria by autophagosomes. In addition, we also address a functional association of mitophagy with mitochondrial dynamics through the interaction of mitophagy adaptor and receptor proteins with mitochondrial fusion and fission proteins.

Self-closing drawers are used in high-end products, such as furniture, home appliances, and a range of other storage devices. In this study, a self-closing mechanism is proposed. A system consisting of a friction latch, constant force spring, rotary damper with rack, and pinion is developed. The retracting drawer can be latched at any position and can be reactivated by simple touch. The constant force spring and rotary damper offer smooth closing action. The ergonomic quality of the closing action is quantified by an index based on velocity-time behavior. The effects of various design parameters are analyzed with a dynamics model and experimentally validated by prototype testing.
The production of high quality oil to meet new standard needs a 'next generation' innovative oil refining tool in paradigm shift. 'Nanoneutralization' using controlled hydrodynamic cavitation-assisted Nanoreactor is successfully being introduced and commercialized into edible oil industry and it plays a key driver for sustainable development of food processing. This emerging technology using bubble dynamics as a consequence of Bernoulli's principle by hydrodynamic cavitation in Venturi-designed multi-flow through cell is radically changing the conventionally chemical-oriented neutralization. Nanoneutralization derived by the creation of nanometer-sized bubbles formed through scientifically structured geometric channels under high pressure has been proven to improve mass transfer and reaction rate so substantially reduce the chemicals required for refined vegetable oil and to increase oil yield while even improving oil quality. More researches on science behind this revolutionary technology will help usto better understand the principle and process hence makes its potential applications expandable in extraction, refining and modification of fats and oils processing.

Due to the decrease in coastal productivity and deterioration in the quality of ecosystem which result from the excessive overfishing of fisheries resources and the environmental pollution, fisheries resources in the Korean waters hit the dangerous level in respect of quantity and quality. In order to manage sustainable and effective fisheries resources, it is necessary to suggest the potential yield (PY) for clarifying available fisheries resources in the Korean waters. So far, however, there have been few studies on the estimation methods for PY in Korea. In addition, there have been no studies on the comparative analysis of the estimation methods and the substantial estimation methods for PY targeted for large marine ecosystem (LME) For the reasonable management of fisheries resources, it is necessary to conduct a comprehensive study on the estimation methods for the PY which combines population dynamics and ecosystem dynamics. To reflect the research need, this study conducts a comparative analysis of estimation methods for the PY in the Korean waters of the East Sea to understand the advantages and disadvantages of each method, and suggests the estimation method which considered both population dynamics and ecosystem dynamics to supplement shortcomings of each method. In this study, the maximum entropy (ME) model of the holistic production method (HPM) is considered to be the most reasonable estimation method due to the high reliability of the estimated parameters. The results of this study are expected to be used as significant basic data to provide indicators and reference points for sustainable and reasonable management of fisheries resources.
