  • The purpose of this research was to test multiplex polymerase chain reaction in investigating the microbiological quality of the risky surfaces in social living places of a military base where over 15 thousand people live together. In 22 samples of 99, there were no bacteria. Only four of the samples contained Shigella, and one of them contained Salmonella, but 77 of the samples contained thermotolerant coliform organisms. There was no statistically significant difference among the microbiological quality of different sites and different equipment surfaces (p>0.05).

  • As a part of the quality control of herbal prescriptions which has been used for diabetes and related diseases, a reversed-phase liquid chromatographic method was developed for the simultaneous quantification of the three marker compounds, puerarin (Puerariae Radix), glycyrrhizin (Glycyrrhizae Radix), schizandrin (Schizandrae Fructus) in Oc Chun San. The HPLC analysis method was validated for parameters such as linearity, Limits of Detection(LOD), quantification(LOQ), repeatability, stability and recovery.

  • The pH value of grass silages is one important parameter to determine the quality of the forages. In an attempt to use NIRS spectra taken for other quality parameter of grass silage it has been shown that a good correlation between NIR spectra of the dried forage and pH value of the fresh forage could be determined. Further investigations revealed that the B coefficients of the pH value calibration were almost the same as the B coefficients of the sugar calibration multiplied with -1. And indead the pH value - in the fresh sample material - of the calibration set is strongly correlated with the sugar concentration - in the dried sample material. It is concluded that next to scientific tools in research the scientist and the user of NTRS equippment has to scrutinze his own work. Examples are given. NIRS is a powerfull technique, but pitfalls are present in surplus.

  • This study compares the performance of neural networks and ordinary least squares regression with quality-control processes. We examine the applicability of neural networks because they do not require any assumptions regarding either the functional from of the underlying process or the distribution of errors. The coefficient of determination($R^2$), mean absolute deviation(MAD), and the mean squared error(MSE) metrics indicate that neural networks are a viable and can be a superior technique. We also demonstrate that an assessment of the magnitude of the neural notwork input layer cumulative weights can be used to determine the relative importance of predictor variables.

  • A study of concurrent bioassay for protein quality and energy level in protein sources was rnade by determining urinary nitrogenous compounds in excreta. The carry over effect of previous feeding was eliminated by 48 h of feeding the experimental diets prior to the determination of for protein digestibility and utilizability, and energy digestibility and metabolizability at 24 h interval during 3 days. Then, protein qualities and energy levels for soybean meal, rapeseed meal and fish meal were calculated by a substitution method. Apparent protein utilization (NB/NI) was affected by the increased fecal nitrogen excretion in soybean meal and by the increased urinary nitrogen excretion in rapeseed meal and fish meal. The apparent metabolizability of energy (ME/GE) was affected by the fecal energy excretion in soybean meal and rapeseed meal and by urinary energy excretion in fishmeal. The results indicated that the concurrent bioassay of protein quality and energy levels in ingredients appears to be applicable to chickens of other age, sex, breeds and environmental conditions.

  • TQM is a kind of generic strategy. Especially it is a competitive strategy which is concerned with the determination of competitive advantages. Strategic a, pp.oach is very important for the successful implementation of TQM. Unfitness between the company's strategy and the TQM program has been a major barrier preventing the effective implementation. In spite of its importance, little is known for TQM's strategic characteristics. TQM's strategic characteristics are different by its evolution stages. Therefore the generic strategic types that TQM seeks can be changed while TQM programs are progressing over its stages. This paper identifies the intended strategic type of TQM by its stages, which will greatly help to prepare the good implementation program of TQM.

  • The issue of capacity constraint resources (CCR) or bottlenecks wandering in product mix decision by applying Theory of Constraints (TOC) management philosophy has been mentioned and demonstrated in several papers. In this study, the effect for prolonging the planning period (PPP) so as to stabilize the CCR is investigated. The results show that the effect for PPP alternative will be positive or negative which is depending on the environment condition. However, a majority cases which have positive effect for PPP alternative can be recognized prior knowing the marketing demand, which is significant in the real application.

  • The maintenance of a deteriorating system is often imperfect. Previous studies have shown that the imperfect preventive maintenance (PM) can reduce the wear out and aging effects of deteriorating systems to a certain level between the conditions of as good as new and as bad as old. In this paper, we employ the concept of the improvement factor in investigating two optimal PM policies; failure limit policy and periodic PM policy. We redefine the improvement factor model as a function of the cost of PM, using this concept, we derive the conditions of optimal PM policies and formulate expressions to compute the expected cost rate. Based on this information, the determination of the maintenance policies which minimize the cost rate is examined. Numerical examples for the Weibull distribution case are also given.

  • This paper presents an automated visual inspection/measuring system for the door inner panel manufacturing process. The main objective of this research is to develop inspection applications with a machine vision system related to the determination or quantification of parameters such as dimension, shape, quality of surfaces, number of holes in a panel, and presence or absence of specific features. For quality measurements, we showed a subpixel image processing technology that will improve the consistency of results and level of precision. Also presented is a data analysis method th detect process shifts so that corrective action can be undertaken before more defective units are manufactured.

  • Motion estimation is a core part of most video compression systems since it directly affects the output video quality and the encoding time. The full search (FS) technique gives the highest visual quality but has the problem of a significant computational load. To solve this problem, we present in this paper a modified median (MMED) operation and advanced search strategies for fast motion estimation. The proposed MMED operation includes a temporally co-located motion vector (MV) to select an appropriate initial candidate. Moreover, we introduce a search procedure that reduces the number of thresholds and simplifies the early termination conditions for the determination of a final MV. The experimental results show that the proposed approach achieves substantial speedup compared with the conventional methods including the motion vector field adaptive search technique (MVFAST) and predictive MVFAST (PMVFAST). The proposed algorithm also improves the PSNR values by increasing the correlation between the MVs, compared with the FS method.
