The aim of this study is to provide the values and descriptive implications of the Design Thinking (DT) method into the context of educational problems of practice in an undergraduate course. To achieve the research objective, both quantitative and qualitative studies were conducted. For the qualitative study, the student's productions and reflections on the experience of the application of the DT into educational problems were analyzed. For the quantitative research, one-group pre and post-test were designed to validate the effectiveness of the DT method into educational contexts in terms of creativity level to measure the student's Creativity Potential and Practiced Creativity, Academic Self-Efficacy Scale, and Problem-Solving Inventory. This study validated that the DT method had a statistically significant influence on those three competencies and also illustrated the detailed process from a qualitative viewpoint. The results and implications reflect the potential of the DT approach with the educational problem of practice, especially, in the ill-structured problem-solving contexts for student-centered instructional setting.

Risk elements of highway safety facilities are affected by complex environments. Thus, risk-based approach for traffic safety facilities is needed. For this, in this study, qualitative and quantitative risk assessment methodology and procedure for highway safety facilities is proposed, which can be used as risk-based approach incorporating VE process. Also, for the quantitative risk assessment, event tree using EPDO(Equivalent Property Damage Only) with respect to frequency and magnitude of risk events is introduced. As a result, risk index of alternative 1(140cm) and 2(127(cm) which can be used as performance factor in VE approach are estimated.

As the uncertainty of demand in B2B electronics market has increased, firms need a strong method to estimate the market demand. An accurate prediction on the market demand is crucial for a firm not to overproduce or underproduce its goods, which would influence the performance of the firm. However, it is complicated to estimate the demand in a B2B market, particularly for the private sector, because firms are very diverse in terms of size, industry, and types of business. This study proposes both qualitative and quantitative demand forecasting approaches for B2B PC products. Four different measures for predicting PC products in B2B market with consideration of the different PC uses-personal work, common work, promotion, and welfare-are developed as the qualitative model's input variables. These measures are verified by survey data collected from experts in 139 firms, and can be applied when individual firms estimate the demand of PC goods in a B2B market. As the quantitative approach, the multiple regression model is proposed and it includes variables of region, type of industry, and size of the firm. The regression model can be applied when the aggregated demand for overall domestic PC market needs to be estimated.

The use of Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) in the development of safety-related Human-Machine Interface (HMI) systems has gained much momentum in nuclear applications. Recently, one of the application areas for the Advanced Power Reactor 1400 (APR1400) is in the development of the advanced Component Interface Module (CIM) of the Engineered Safety Features Actuation System (ESFAS). Using systems engineering approach, we have developed a new FPGA-based advanced CIM software. The first step of our software development process involves the Preliminary Hazard Analysis (PHA) based on the previous CIM design. In this paper, we describe the qualitative approach used in performing the preliminary hazard analysis. The paper presents the methodology for applying a modified Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) procedure for the conduct of PHA which resulted in a qualitative risk-ranking scheme that informed the decisions for the safety criteria in the requirements specification phase. The qualitative approach provided the justification for design changes during the advanced CIM software development process.

The purpose of this study is to develop an approach to teaching qualitative research methods (TQRM) for Library and Information Science. To draw trend of TQRM, 76 course syllabi collected in the research oriented universities' master and doctoral programs, were analyzed using content analysis. The study proposes both common topics and essential strategies for TQRM in terms of the paradigm of qualitative research, research design, wide range of approaches to QR, diversity of collecting and analyzing data, writing, and evaluation criteria. It is very important to identify qualitative stance and to understand paradigms and philosophical and theoretical frameworks of QR for conducting QR reiteratively, creatively, reflectively.

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to understand and describe health-related experience of women with physical disabilities, using feminist qualitative approach. Methods: Eight women with physical disabilities participated to the study. Their mean age was 43, ranging from 39 to 67 years old. The data were collected by individual in-depth interviews and all interviews were audio-taped and transcribed verbatim. The transcribed data were analyzed using traditional qualitative content analysis from a feminist perspective. Results: Six major categories emerged from the data. Category 1: "Isolation and alienation from the world.", Category 2: "A distorted self-image of physically disabled body.", Category 3: "Difficulties due to a fixed gender role.", Category 4: "Constant suffering from chronic pain.", Category 5: "Health problems that they have to endure by themselves.", Category 6: "Sublimation through self-reliance." The results of the study show how Korean women with physical disabilities suffer from social stigma, indifferences, and discriminations and struggle to survive in these unfriendly surroundings. Conclusion: The results of the study would help health professionals in designing effective intervention to improve health and to empower women with physical disabilities by providing deep understanding and critical insights of those women.

This study focuses on the development of simple qualitative indicators for evaluating and selecting innovation leading companies that challenge National Award. Another purpose of this study is to complement the aspect in which the innovative or value of the companies' products, technologies, and services is only quantitatively evaluated. Existing evaluation indicators of national award have too many evaluation items and were not suitable for innovation-based company evaluation. The research approach is to select category for developing qualitative indicators based on previous studies and TF discussion. From the input-process-output-outcome point of view, we have set up an indicator system as a series of flows. Finally, five categories such as creativity, system excellence, customer value, performance, and ripple effects are selected as qualitative indicator. For these selected indicators, conceptual definitions and the main points of evaluation are described. And the system level evaluation and the ADLI approach are presented for reference. The appendix also includes examples of qualitative and quantitative evaluation of real companies using these indicators. However, this study implies the possibility that the evaluation results may vary depending on the level and perspective of the evaluator. We hoped that detailed research on candidate indicators that can be used as qualitative indicators and research on the development of mixed indicators(qualitative and quantitative) will continue in the future.

미래사회의 농업-농촌은 다양성과 복합성을 지닌 도시화된 형태로의 변화를 예견해 볼 수 있다. 이는 인력개발, 기술개발, 시설개발, 문화개발 및 환경개발 및 환경개발 등 그 영역과 요구 또한 구체화되고 다양화되는 추세에 비추어 볼 수 있다. 이 연구는 연구자의 관점(qualitative approach)에서 농업-농촌사회 개발 전문가들의 개발 진행과 그 영역들은 무엇이며 어느 영역들에 개발비중을 두었는 지를 알아 보는 데 있었다. 11명의 농업 및 농촌 지역 개발 전문가들의 개발관점은 그 중요성과 영역의 다양성에서 공통점과 차이점이 있었다. 즉, 인력개발과 경제개발 영역에서 공통점으로 보였으며, 환경영역 및 문화영역에서 다소의 차이가 있었다. 이제 농업-농촌개발은 "instead of"의 개발접근이 지양되면서 "as well as"의 다각적 접근(multidisciplinary approach)이어야 한다. 또한, 개발의 개념은 성장(growth)이 아닌 유지(keeping)와 진행(process)의 차원에서 이해되어야 한다.

Although there have been many efforts to reduce accidents on construction sites, such accidents continue to occur. New technologies have recently been developed to improve safety and their performance needs to be evaluated to determine their suitability prior to the application. The assessment for safety performance mainly is conducted depending on qualitative and subjective judgment of supervisors. However, there are rarely proper approaches to assess such qualitative measures. Therefore, we propose a fuzzy-based approach to assessing the performance of a new technology. The assessment of a new technology, called a mobile detector (MD), was carried out as a case study. The output is compared with those by a numerical simulation. As a result, the fuzzy-based performance assessment is shown to be appropriate for this evaluation.

Utilizing a qualitative multimethod approach, this study was to discover and improve the understanding of occupational socialization process of librarians. Through theoretical sampling, 42 participants were in-deathly interviewed at three studies, i.e phenomenological, ethnographic, and grounded theory approach. Analyzed data were finally integrated using grounded theory approach. 'Acquiring Social Recognition as an Information Professional' was emerged as the core category for describing and guiding the occupational socialization process. A seven-stage process was discovered: 'Adapting', 'Experiencing being the Periphery', 'Perceiving the Role', 'Pursuing the advancement', 'Realizing the professionality', 'Rediscovering the Value', and 'Showing the Professionality'. Especially, 'Experiencing being the Periphery' was identified as a critical and unique process, reflected the perceived status of librarians in Korea. Also, it discussed characteristics and socialization strategies of the process.
