  • Despite the important of qualitative research method, little is used to understand dress and culture in Korea. This study proposed qualitative research method to understand deeply cultural aspects of dress. The articles which were selected from J. of Korean Society of Clothing and Textiles, The Korean Society of Costume, Clothing and Textiles Research Journal, Home Economics Research Journal, published master's thesis and doctoral dissertation, and interdisciplinary articles were analyzed from 1977~1999. Based on results of the analysis of articles, it was found that qualitative research method was appropriate to understand dress and culture. Many articles were dealt with non-western culture. However, the use of qualitative research method is very well suited to help the researcher understand concepts that are deeply embedded in western culture. Implications pertain to researcher in the area of human behavior and marketing. The importance of dependability and credibility was discussed in qualitative research method.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the possibility of qualitative evaluation and applicable models in the evaluation area of educational program. To this end, the concept and characteristics of qualitative evaluation are examined, and grounded theory is selected as a suitable methodology for evaluation, and its characteristics and procedures are described. Because qualitative evaluation focuses on the spontaneous practice elements of the site, it can supplement the quantitative evaluation of the variables set in advance. The researcher presented the theory of qualification as a methodology for qualitative evaluation, aiming to extract the theory explaining the phenomenon among the qualitative methodologies.

  • In order to examine the ways to improve the efficiency of R&D investment, this paper presents analysis on both quantitative and qualitative efficiency of R&D projects. As Korea's R&D investment has significantly increased in recent years, the efficiency of R&D investment has attracted attention. In this paper, a Data Envelopment Analysis(DEA) method is used to construct models for quantitative efficiency and qualitative efficiency analysis. Based on a cases of agricultural R&D projects of Korea, the efficiency of national R&D projects were analyzed and their quantitative and qualitative efficiencies are compared. As a result, statistically significant difference between quantitative and qualitative efficiency was found. Also, characteristics of Decision Making Units(DMUs) which can influence both quantitative and qualitative efficiency were identified. In particular, the stage of a R&D project has significant impact on R&D efficiency. This study suggests that in order to enhance R&D efficiency both quantitative and qualitative nature of outputs should be considered when measuring R&D efficiency.

  • The purpose of this paper is to examine the important characteristics of the qualitative research methods and to analyze application of these methods in the field of family therapy. First, general characteristics of qualitative research methods and typical features of qualitative research designs are described. Second, contents related with meanings, adequacy, and application process of qualitative research methods in the field of family therapy are discussed. Third, cardinal issues that could hinder the development of qualitative family therapy research are reviewed. Qualitative research methods provide a scientific and systematic way of looking at family therapy holistically. These methods may add new dimensions to qualitative research in the field of family therapy and thus increase its diversity. The versatility of qualitative research methods is a good match for examining the complexity and the diversity of family forms and experience. Therefore, qualitative research methods has the potential to advance the science and practice of family therapy and that family therapy researchers have the potential to advance qualitative research methods. Implications for the development of qualitative research methods in the field of family therapy in Korea are suggested.

  • Objectives This research was aimed to analyze and assess the articles of qualitative research of Pediatrics by following Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ). Methods Two researchers analyzed and assessed the reports' quality and appropriateness based on COREQ guideline. The articles that failed to achieve consensus from the two researchers, the third researcher made a final decision. Results A total of fifty-six reports which used caregivers as participants, were selected and adopted qualitative research methods were chosen. In most qualitative studies, COREQ was not implemented. Some parts of the studies were poorly described and elaborated when reviewing them based on the COREQ guidelines. In the 'Research team and reflexivity', there was lack of description about the researcher. In the 'Study design', there were no detailed descriptions on the approaches they took in recruiting their study participants. There was not enough detail reflexivity participants who refused, and where the recruitment took place. There were also no records of whether there was a pilot test or a data saturation. In 'Analysis and findings' section, there were few articles mentioning Participant checking, and the main opinion of the participants were well analyzed in all the papers, but excluding opinions of few participants. Conclusions There are still many qualitative studies that have caregivers as participants, in the field of pediatrics. However, methodological skills are insufficient. The use of the COREQ guidelines should be further implemented for more robust and methodological improvement.

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to achieve a qualitative understanding of childcare teachers' cooperation experiences with Nuri curriculum teaching assistants. Methods: The study adopted a qualitative research design. Participants comprised 23 childcare teachers working with Nuri curriculum teaching assistants. Focus group interviews were conducted to discuss their cooperation experience with the teaching assistants. Qualitative themes analyses were carried out following individual-level analyses, group-level analyses, and cross-group-comparisons. Results and Conclusion: The results showed that childcare teachers, at first, had low expectation for Nuri curriculum teaching assistants because they have ambiguous job descriptions. However, the teachers' actual interactions exhibited cooperation effects on improving the quality of childcare. Childcare teachers suggested the ways to promote cooperation between childcare teachers and Nuri curriculum teaching assistants at individual and systemic levels.

  • Purpose: Exploring the variables that predict teachers' intent when referring students to mental health professionals is important. The Theory of Planned Behavio (TPB) is a theory of predicting people's intentions of performing a particular behavior; the intent to perform a certain behavior is determined by three factors. (1) attitudes toward the behavior, (2) subjective norms, and (3) perceived control. This study aimed to develop a TPB measurement to investigate what variables predict the intentions of teacher's referral behaviors. Methods: A qualitative study following standardized manuals and guidelines for developing a TPB measurement was used. As a qualitative research method, the Consensual Qualitative Research-Modified (CQR-M) was used. According to the findings from the qualitative study, the quantitative measurement to assess teachers' referral intention, attitude, subjective norm, and behavioral control was developed. Results: The reliability and validity of the newly developed measurement were tested and verified. Conclusion: The newly developed measurement would contribute to a future empirical study that will examine predictors of teachers' referral intention.

  • Objectives This study was aimed to analyze the reports of qualitative research published in domestic Korean medicine journals. Methods Eleven published qualitative research studies were selected for analysis. Selected reports were analyzed by Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ), a reporting guideline for qualitative research. Results In the 1st domain, descriptions of personal characteristics, interviewer's bias or assumption were insufficient. In the 2nd domain, descriptions such as presence of non-participants, research questions for the interview guidelines, data saturation and transcript return to participants were insufficient. In the 3rd domain, descriptions of items related to number of data coder, participants evaluating the finding, and clarity of minor themes were insufficient. Conclusions Qualitative studies in Korean Medicine have increased. COREQ should be considered by investigators who report qualitative research, in order to improve the quality of research.

  • The purpose of this research is to study the meanings and characteristics of qualitative research method in LIS. As the philosophy and epistemology of qualitative research are widely different from those of quantitative research, the meaning of validity and reliability must be interpreted in its ow9 structure and dimension. Essentially qualitative researchers seek to understand and interpret the world of others from their own viewpoints which basically tend to be subjective. Accordingly, qualitative researchers‘ understandings and interpretations are met with readers' subjectivity. By carefully analyzing the nature of qualitative research in LIS, I tried to point out some problems in terms of validity and reliability and practical strategies. Six problems issued in the qualitative research method are presented.
