  • The aim of this study is to obtain the nonlinear and post-buckling responses of relatively thick functionally graded plates with oblique elliptical cutouts using a new semi-analytical approach. To model the oblique elliptical hole in a FGM plate, six plate-elements are used and the connection between these elements is provided by the well-known Penalty method. Therefore, the semi-analytical technique used in this paper is known as the plate assembly technique. In order to take into account for functionality of the material in a perforated plate, the volume fraction of the material constituents follows a simple power law distribution. Since the FGM perforated plates are relatively thick in this research, the structural model is assumed to be the first order shear deformation theory and Von-Karman's assumptions are used to incorporate geometric nonlinearity. The equilibrium equations for FGM plates containing elliptical holes are obtained by the principle of minimum of total potential energy. The obtained nonlinear equilibrium equations are solved numerically using the quadratic extrapolation technique. Various sets of boundary conditions for FGM plates and different cutout sizes and orientations are assumed here and their effects on nonlinear response of plates under compressive loads are examined.

  • This work addresses a three-dimensional nonlinear structural analysis of the constructive phases of a cable-stayed segmental concrete bridge using The Finite Element Method through ANSYS, version 14.5. New subroutines have been added to ANSYS via its UPF customization tool to implement viscoelastoplastic constitutive equations with cracking capability to model concrete's structural behavior. This numerical implementation allowed the use of three-dimensional twenty-node quadratic elements (SOLID186) with the Element-Embedded Rebar model option (REINF264), conducting to a fast and efficient solution. These advantages are of fundamental importance when large structures, such as bridges, are modeled, since an increasing number of finite elements is demanded. After validating the subroutines, the bridge located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and known as "Ponte do Saber" (Bridge of Knowledge, in Portuguese), has been numerically modeled, simulating each of the constructive phases of the bridge. Additionally, the data obtained numerically is compared with the field data collected from monitoring conducted during the construction of the bridge, showing good agreement.

  • This paper presents an exact integration for the hypersingular boundary integral equation of two-dimensional elastostatics. The boundary is discretized by straight segments and the physical variables are approximated by discontinuous quadratic elements. The integral for the hypersingular boundary integral equation analysis is given in a closed form. It is proven that using the exact integration for discontinuous boundary element, the singular integral in the Cauchy Principal Value and the hypersingular integral in the Hadamard Finite Part can be obtained straightforward without special treatment. Two numerical examples are implemented to verify the correctness of the derived exact integration.

  • In this paper, we discuss a reduced-order modeling for the Benjamin-Bona-Mahony-Burgers (BBMB) equation and its application to a distributed feedback control problem through the centroidal Voronoi tessellation (CVT). Spatial distcritization to the BBMB equation is based on the finite element method (FEM) using B-spline functions. To determine the basis elements for the approximating subspaces, we elucidate the CVT approaches to reduced-order bases with snapshots. For the purpose of comparison, a brief review of the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is provided and some numerical experiments implemented including full-order approximation, CVT based model, and POD based model. In the end, we apply CVT reduced-order modeling technique to a feedback control problem for the BBMB equation.

  • A two-dimensional FEM program, which considers bending effects in the membrane fromulation, was developed under plane strain assumption for analyzing forming processes of an arbitrarily shaped draw-die of automotive panels. For the evaluation of bending effects with membrane elements, the bending equivalent forces and stiffnesses are calculated from the bending moment computed using the changes in curvature of the formed shape of two membrane ones. The curves depicted with 3 nodes are described by a circle, a quadratic equation, and a cubic equation, respectively, and in the simulation of the stretch/draw sections of an automotive inner panel, three different description results are compared each other. Also, the bending results are compared with membrane results and measurements in order to verify the validity of the developed program.

  • The scattering property of TMz illuminated a elliptic dielectric cylinders with arbitrary cross section are analyzed by the boundary element techniques. The boundary element equations are for- mulated via Maxwell's equations, weighted residual of Green's theorem, and the boundary conditions. The unknown surface fields on the boundaries are then calculated by the boundary element integral equations. Once the surface fields are found, the scattered fields in far-zone and scattering widths (SW) are readily determined. To show the validity and usefulness of this formulation, computations are compared with those obtained using analytical method and one layer circular cylinder. As exten- sion to arbitrary cross-sectioned cylinders, plane wave scattering from a elliptic dielectric cylinders are numerically analyzed. A general computer program has been developed using the quadratic ele- ments(Higher order borndary elements) and the Gaussian quadrature.

  • In this study, a fundamental approach to make clear the mechanism of the mutual interference and coalescence of stress fields in the vicinity of two crack tips on the process of their slow growth, using boundary element method. Automatic generation of quadratic discontinuous elements along both of the crack boundaries which can be defined by an arbitrary piece-wise straight geometry. The direction of the crack-extension increment is predicted by the maximum principal stress criterion, corrected to account for the discreteness of the crack extension. Along the computed direction, the crack is extended one increment. Automatic incremental crack-extension analysis with no remeshing, computation of the stress intensity factors by J-integral. Numerical stress intensity factors for two growing cracks in plane-homogeneous regions were determined.

  • Currently, computational analysis is a popular technology in automobile engineering. Finite element analysis is an excellent method for body analysis. For finite element analysis, accurate modeling is very important to obtain precise information. Stick modeling is a convenient way in that it is easy and simple. When a stick model is utilized, the joints are modified in the tuning process. A tuning method for the joint has been developed. The joints are modeled by designated beam elements. An optimization method called "Goal Programming" is employed to impose the target values. With the tuned joints, the entire optimization has been carried out. Using the "Recursive Quadratic Programming" algorithm, the optimization process determines the configuration of the entire structure and sizes of all the sections. For example, the structure of an electrical vehicle is modeled and analyzed by the method. The stick model works well since the structure is made of aluminium frames. Although the example handles an electrical vehicle, this method can be applied to general vehicle structures.

  • The model updating problems, which are to find the optimal approximation to the discrete quadratic model obtained by the finite element method, are critically important to the vibration analysis. In this paper, the structured model updating problem is considered, where the coefficient matrices are required to be symmetric and positive semidefinite, represent the interconnectivity of elements in the physical configuration and minimize the dynamics equations, and furthermore, due to the physical feasibility, the physical parameters should be positive. To the best of our knowledge, the model updating problem involving all these constraints has not been proposed in the existed literature. In this paper, based on the semidefinite programming technique, we design a general-purpose numerical algorithm for solving the structured model updating problems with incomplete measured data and present some numerical results to demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.
