  • Objectives : Despite various government initiatives, including the expansion of national health insurance coverage, health inequality has been a key health policy issue in South Korea during the past decade. This study describes and compares the extent of the total health inequality and the income-related health inequality over time among Korean adults. Methods : This study employs the 1998, 2001 and 2005 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (KNHANESs). The self-assessed health (SAH) ordinal responses, measured on a five-point scale, resealed to cardinal values to measure the health inequalities with using interval regression. The boundaries of each threshold for the interval regression analysis were obtained from the empirical distribution of the EuroQol-5 Dimension (EQ-5D) valuation weights estimated from the 2005 KNHANES. The final model predicting the individuals' health status included age, gender, educational attainment, occupation, income, and the regional prosperity index. The concentration index was used to measure and analyze the health inequality. Results : The KNHANES data showed an unequal distribution of the total health inequality in favor of the higher income groups, and this is getting worse over time (0.0327 in 1998, 0.0393 in 2001 and 0.0924 in 2005). The income-related health inequality in 2005 was 0.0278, indicating that 30.1% of the total health inequality can be attributed to income. Conclusions : The findings indicate there are health inequalities across the sociodemographic and income groups despite the recent government's efforts. Further research is warranted to investigate what potential policy actions are necessary to decrease the health inequality in Korea.

  • IEEE 802.11 standard has achieved huge success in the past decade and is still under development to provide higher physical data rate and better quality of service (QoS). An important problem for the development and optimization of IEEE 802.11 networks is the modeling of the MAC layer channel access protocol. Although there are already many theoretic analysis for the 802.11 MAC protocol in the literature, most of the models focus on the saturated traffic and assume infinite buffer at the MAC layer. In this paper we develop a unified analytical model for IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol in ad hoc networks. The impacts of channel access parameters, traffic rate and buffer size at the MAC layer are modeled with the assistance of a generalized Markov chain and an M/G/1/K queue model. The performance of throughput, packet delivery delay and dropping probability can be achieved. Extensive simulations show the analytical model is highly accurate. From the analytical model it is shown that for practical buffer configuration (e.g. buffer size larger than one), we can maximize the total throughput and reduce the packet blocking probability (due to limited buffer size) and the average queuing delay to zero by effectively controlling the offered load. The average MAC layer service delay as well as its standard deviation, is also much lower than that in saturated conditions and has an upper bound. It is also observed that the optimal load is very close to the maximum achievable throughput regardless of the number of stations or buffer size. Moreover, the model is scalable for performance analysis of 802.11e in unsaturated conditions and 802.11 ad hoc networks with heterogenous traffic flows.

  • Multiprocessor architectures and platforms, such as, a multiprocessor system on chip (MPSoC) recently introduced to extend the applicability of the Moore's law, depend upon concurrency and synchronization in both software and hardware to enhance design productivity and system performance. With the rapidly approaching billion transistors era, some of the main problem in deep sub-micron technologies characterized by gate lengths in the range of 60-90 nm will arise from non scalable wire delays, errors in signal integrity and non-synchronized communication. These problems may be addressed by the use of Network on Chip (NOC) architecture for future System-on-Chip (SoC). We have modeled a concurrent architecture for a customizable and scalable NOC in a system level modeling environment using MLDesigner (from MLD Inc.). Varying network loads under various traffic scenarios were applied to obtain realistic performance metrics. We provide the simulation results for latency as a function of the buffer size. We have abstracted the area results for NOC components from its FPGA implementation. Modeled NOC architecture supports three different levels of quality-of-service (QoS).

  • As the number of services available on the Web increases, it is vital to be able to identify which services can be trusted. Since there can be an extremely large number of potential services that offer similar functionality, it is challenging to select the right ones. Service requestors have to decide which services closelysatisfy their needs, and theymust worry about the reliability of the service provider. Although an individual service can be trusted, a composed service is not guaranteed to be trustworthy. In this paper, we present a trust model that supports service discovery and composition based on trustworthiness. We define a method to evaluate trust in order to discover trustworthy services. We also provide a method to perform trust estimation for dynamic service composition, and we present results of two experiments. The proposed model allows for service requestors to obtain the most trustworthy services possible. Our mechanism uses direct and indirect user experience to discover the trustworthiness of the services and service providers. Moreover, composing services based on quantitative trust measurements will allow for consumers to acquire a highly reliable service that meet their quality and functional requirements.

  • The performance of IEEE 802.11e enhanced distributed channel access (EDCA) is influenced by several interactive parameters that make quality of service (QoS) control complex and difficult. In EDCA, the most critical performance influencing parameters are the arbitration interframe space (AIFS) and contention window size (CW) of each access category (AC). The objective of this paper is to provide a scheme for parameter control such that the throughput per station as well as the overall system throughput of the network is maximized and controllable. For this purpose, a simple and accurate analytical model describing the throughput behavior of EDCA networks is presented in this paper. Based on this model, the paper further provides a scheme in which a Pareto optimal system configuration is obtained via an appropriate CW control for a given AIFS value, which is a different approach compared to relevant papers in the literature that deal with CW control only. The simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method which shows significant performance improvements compared to other existing algorithms.

  • The most challenging issues in the multi-channel MAC of the IEEE 1609.4 standard is how to handle the dynamic vehicular traffic condition with a high mobility, dynamic topology, and a trajectory change. Therefore, dynamic channel coordination schemes between CCH and SCH are required to provide the proper bandwidth for CCH/SCH intervals and to improve the quality of service (QoS). In this paper, we use a Markov model to optimize the interval based on the dynamic vehicular traffic condition with high mobility nodes in the multi-channel MAC of the IEEE 1609.4 standard. We evaluate the performance of the three-dimensional Markov chain based on the Poisson distribution for the node distribution and velocity. We also evaluate the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) effect for the multi-channel MAC coordination scheme of the IEEE 1609.4 standard. The result of simulation proves that the performance of the dynamic channel coordination scheme is affected by the high node mobility and the AWGN. In this research, we evaluate the model analytically for the average delay on CCHs and SCHs and also the saturated throughput on SCHs.

  • In this thesis, we propose a Speed Accommodation Priority Algorithm Scheme(SPAS) and Traffic Control Model Scheme (TCMS) to satisfy a desired handoff dropping probability and to reduce the blocking probability of new calls using mobility characteristics and handoff rate in mobile communication networks. The guard channels below threshold can guarantee the Quality of Service(QoS) in terms of the request handoff dropping probability and the guard channels above the threshold can be used to handle high priority new calls and high priority handoff calls. When the ratio of the handoff call arrival rate is less then the ratio of the new call arrival rate, the proposed method can guarantee the new call better than the previous guard channel scheme.

  • This paper presents the design of a value-added ATM switch. The ATM switch ca perform CAC Processing and Firewall Processing Routine at packet-level (IP) at the ATM environment per port. The proposed two routine are integrated into the components of ATM switch. The Firewall switch employs a suggested two routine model to avoid or reduce the latency caused by filtering. Also, we suggest four classes are defined. namely, classes A, B, C, and D, which are orded from the safest to the most dangerous. The suggested model performance of ATM Firewall switch is estimated simulation in terms of the throught and latency by computer.
