This study aimed to establish the quantitative method to analyze the content of peroxynitrite-scavengers belonging to polyphenols in six Korean Quercus species (Quercus mongolica, Q. dentata, Q. acutissima, Q. alienta, Q. serrata, and Q. variabilis) by HPLC. The twelve peroxynitrite-scavengers, flavanols (catechins: (+)-catechin, (-)-epicatechin, and (-)-epigallocatechin), flavonols (kaempferol and quercetin), flavonol glycosides (astragalin, quercitrin, and isoquercitrin), flavonol acylated glycosides (astragalin 6''-gallate and isoquercitrin 6''-gallate), gallic acid and its dimer (ellagic acid) were analyzed by HPLC. Further, anti-Alzheimer's activity was assayed in a passive avoidance testusing mice by measuring the retention latency (sec), the concentration of acetylcholine (ACh), and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity. Simultaneous analysis of the extracts of the six Quercus leaves was achieved on a Capcell C18 column ($5{\mu}m$, $250mm{\times}4.6mm\;i.d.$) with a gradient elution of 0.05% HAc and 0.05% HAc in $CH_3CN$. In the extract of Q. mongolica leaves, the content of gallic acid (32.53 mg/g), (+)-catechin (28.78 mg/g), (-)-epicatehin (22.03 mg/g), astragalin 6''-gallate (20.94 mg/g), and isoquercitrin 6''-gallate (44.11 mg/g) and peroxynitrite-scavenging activity ($IC_{50}$, $0.831{\mu}g/ml$) were high. This extract delayed the retention latency and inhibited acetylcholinesterase activity in scopolamine-induced memory impairment of mice, suggesting that it has anti-Alzheimer's activity.
Oak wilt caused by Raffaelea quercus-mongolicae was first noticed in South Korea in 2004 and, ever since, its distribution and damage have been increasing. To screen a fungicide effective for oak wilt control by tree injection, laboratory and field experiments were conducted. Ten fungicides and one antibiotic were examined in vivo for their effectiveness in restricting the growth of R. quercus-mongolicae and R. quercivora (Japanese oak wilt pathogen) isolates. To the Korean isolates of R. quercus-mongolicae, chlorothalonil showed the highest fungicidal effects, followed by benomyl and propiconazole. To the Japanese one, propiconazole was highest in the fungicidal effectiveness, followed by benomyl and bitertanol. Propiconazole was selected for field-testing of its control efficacy because it showed good fungicidal effects in vitro and systemic activity. The control efficacy in the field was 87.5% in the first year of injection and 66.7% in the second year, indicating the fungicidal effects last at least over one year.
This investigation involves a study of the physical and chemical factors of Pinus densiflora SIEB. et ZUCC. and Quercus mongolica Fisher barks affecting on the adsorption of heavy mteal ions. The results obtained can be summarized as follows. 1. The capacity of the untreated bark to remove the Cu and Cd from solution was similar to or 5% higher than that of formaldehyde treated bark in both species. Considering that untreated bark lead to color-leaching problem, bark treated with formaldehyde are economical. 2. With decreasing particle size of bark(20-80), the adsorption ratio of the Cu and Cd from solution was increased. Quercus bark adsorbed more Cu and Cd at smaller particle size compared to Pinus bark. 3. The heavy metal eqilibrium adsorption of the bark from Cu and Cd solution was attained within 10 min. Pinus bark removed about 48% of the Cu and 41% of the Cd from solution in 10 min while Quercus bark removed about 50% during that period. 4. As the initial metal concentration increased. the absolute metal uptake was increased while percentage removal was decreased. At the lower metal concentration (10 ppm). Pinus and Quercus barks removed 77-94% of the Cu and 72-84% of the Cd. At high metal concentration (200 ppm), the adsorption ratio was 40% Cu and 25% Cd, respectivelty. 5. The maximum adsorption of the Cu and Cd from solution was obtained at pH 5-6 in filtrate. 6. With increased bark weight per given metal concentration, absolute removal of metal ion from solution was increased, but the percentage removal was decreased. The amount of adsorption was 4.2 mg Cu and 4.2 mg Cd per gr. Pinus, bark and 5.4 mg Cu and 4.3 mg Cd per gr. Quercus bark, respectively.
Biomass expansion factors, which convert timber volume (or dry weight) to biomass, are used for estimating the forest biomass and accounting for the carbon budget at a regional or national scale. We estimated the biomass conversion and expansion factors (BCEF), biomass expansion factors (BEF), root to shoot ratio (R), and ecosystem biomass expansion factor (EBEF) for Quercus mongolica Fisch. and Quercus variabilis Bl. forests based on publications in Korea. The mean BCEF, BEF, and R for Q. mongolica was 1.0383 Mg/$m^3$ (N = 27; standard deviation [SD], 0.5515), 1.3572 (N = 27; SD, 0.1355), and 0.2017 (N = 32; SD, 0.0447), respectively. The mean BCEF, BEF, and R for Q. variabilis was 0.7164 Mg/$m^3$ (N = 17; SD, 0.3232), 1.2464 (N = 17; SD, 0.0823), and 0.1660 (N = 8; SD, 0.0632), respectively. The mean EBEF, as a simple method for estimating the ground vegetation biomass, was 1.0216 (N = 7; SD, 0.0232) for Q. mongolica forest ecosystems, and 1.0496 (N = 8; SD, 0.0725) for Q. variabilis forest ecosystems. The biomass expansion factor values in this study may be better estimates of forest biomass in Q. mongolica or Q. variabilis forests of Korea compared with the default values given by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
Data with collected from 278 trees sampled through out the climatic range of Quercus acuta in Jeju Experiment Forests. The models tested to select the best-fit equations form the Max & Burkhart's model, Kozak's model, and Lee's model. Performance of the equations in predicting of residuals on predicted values. In result, all three models gave slightly better values of fit statistics. In plotting residuals against predicted diameter, Max & Burkhart's model showed underestimation in predicting small diameter and Lee's Model did the same in predicting small diameter. Based on the above analysis of three models in predicting stem taper, Kozak's model was chosen for the best-fit stem taper equations, and its parameter estimates was given for Quercus acuta. Kozak's model was used to develop a stem volume table outside bark for Quercus acuta.
This research was conducted to determine if the obtained serological data would reveal: (1) grouping among basic Quercus species, (2) the degree of correspondence within and among any detected grouping, and (3) the comparative value of new serological technique, "rocket immunoelectrophoresis". Overall quantitative and qualitative data indicate the genus Quercus is distantly separated from the Fagus. Within the Quercus, the subgenus Cyclobalanopsis is separable from the Lepidobalanus. But the elevation of the Cyclobalanopsis to the rank of a separate genus is not warranted. Antisera produced to the species belonging to Lepidobalanus gave strong reactions with other experimental species in the same subgenus. Particularly, Q. aliena, Q. donarium, and Q. serrata are tied up each other in terms of serological similarity. Rocket immunoelectrophoresis used in this systematic research proved to be a valuable new technique for systematic serology. To obtain the degree of protein similarity (serological correspondence) this technique was used in plant systematic research and determined by sum of total rocket heights. The rocket immunoelectrophoresis illustrated the measurement of individual immunoprecipitin systems identical or partly identical to those in the reference-reaction as quantitation of all available rocket heights.t heights.
Wood properties depend on not only environmental factors such as soil, climate change, or forest stand characteristics, but also silviculture practices such as thinning, regeneration, or selection. This study report influences of the extent of thinning intensity from no thinning, moderate and heavy thinning to the wood property of Quercus acuta forest stands in Wan-do arboretum, Jeollanam-do Province. The results showed that there were close relationships between thinning intensity and anatomical, physical or mechanical properties of Quercus acuta wood. Especially, there are close relationships between thinning intensity and ring width or mechanical properties of wood. As a result, this study showed high correlations between Quercus acuta wood properties and thinning intensity of Quercus acuta forest stand. These findings are expected to be very useful as fundamental data for the implementation of silviculture practices of this specie to produce timber.
This text was analyzed and investigated the vegetation and floristic composition by cluster analysis and classification of phytosociological method, to evaluate the species composition, habitat environment and community structure of Liriope platyphylla and Liriope spicata group in Korea. The southeast slope gradient of the habitat of L. platyphylla and L. spicata was 6.7 to 8.4%, and the habitat altitude of L. platyphylla (41.0 m), L. spicata (114.9 m) was different. Habitat distribution of L. spicata was broader than L. platyphylla. Appearing plants of L. platyphylla and L. spicata group was 58 taxa, 99 taxa, respectively, and Coverage of tree layer was 87.5%, 92.5% respectively. In genus Liriope group, the highest appearing frequency of plant grow in the moist valley as Quercus serrata. Thus, plants of genus Liriope growth was better in moist shade. The vegetation of L. platyphylla group was classified into Quercus serrata community, Castanopsis sieboldii community, Pinus densiflora community and Pinus thunbergii community, and the Liriope spicata group was classified into Quercus serrata community, Quercus alien community, Quercus acutissima community, Prunus verecunda community, Robinia pseudoacacia community, Pinus densiflora community and Pinus thunbergii community. In genus Liriope group, Quercus serrata and Pinus densiflora communities was the closest the similarities.

This study was investigated to determine the antimicrobial effect of the ethanol extract of Quercus mongolica leaf on microbial growth. The ethanol extract at the concentration of $250\;\mu\textrm{g}/mL\;and\;500\;\mu\textrm{g}/mL$ inhibited the growth of gram positive and gram negative food-borne disease bacteria for 40 hours in tryptic soy broth, respectively. Antimicrobial activity of the ethanol extract from Quercus mongolica leaf was not affected by pH and heat treatment. The comparision between ethanol extract and commercially available preservatives on antimicrobial activity in food system was conducted. When the 0.1% ethanol extract of Quercus mongolica leaf was added to pine needle drink and carrot juice, antimicrobial activity was similar to those of containing 0.05% benzoic acid and 0.5% grapefruit seed extract. Also addition of 2~3% ethanol extract to the soybean paste inhibited the microbial growth up to 7 week, comparable to the inhibition of 2% ethanol. Thus, this results indicate that the ethanol extract of Quercus mongolica leaf may be useful as natural antimicrobial agents.
Disclosed is a study related to the thermal characteristics of Pinus densiflora and Quercus dentate identifying the presence of any significant difference in the above trees, which are native to Young Dong Province of Korea, according to different regions of the trees such as branches, barks, living leaves and dead leaves. For this purpose, we have carried out a cone calorimeter test focusing on the variables such as mass loss, heat release, ignition time, flame holding time and concentrations of CO and $CO_2$. The results showed that the total mass loss was greatest in tree branches, whereas the ignition time of dead leaves was fastest both in Pinus densiflora and Quercus dantata. The flame holding times of dead leaves and barks were about $640{\sim}1,016s$ and the total heat release of dead leaves was around 60.1 $MJ/m^2$, twice the total heat release of living leaves. In addition, the maximum exhaust concentrations of CO and $CO_2$ in tree branches of Quercus dentata was 2.82 times higher than those of Pinus densiflora, respectively. From the foregoing, it was confirmed that there exist region-specific differential thermal characteristics in Pinus densiflora and Quercus dentata.
