An Exploratory Study on The Weight Control of Adult (성인의 체중조절에 대한 탐색적 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the subjective opinions related to the weight control by using Q-methodology. Forty four adults were selected for P-sample from July to August, 1998. The collected data were analyzed by PC Quanl program. The results were as follows : There were 5 types of the adult's opinions about the weight control. Type I(Concern about weight control) : This type believes that there is a problem with general social attitudes, but the weight control it self is necessary. Type II(Health conscious) : This type believes that good health is very important and weight control is way of maintaining and improving good health. Type III(Obsessive) : This type believes that weight control is absolutely necessary no matter what it takes including extreme dietary change. Type IV(Influence by social pressure) : This type believes that the external stimulation and help is needed to motivate weight control. Type V(Self control) : This type believes that self determination is necessary regardless of social pressure.

The Types of Smoking Cessation Among Adult Smokers: Q Methodological Approach (성인 금연자의 금연유형에 관한 연구 - Q 방법론적 접근 -)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the subjectivity of smoking cessation methods of smokers. Method: The Q. methodology which provides a method of analyzing the individual's subjectivity was used. The 34 subjects classified 38 selected Q-statements into a 9 point scale to make a normal distribution. The collected data was analyzed using a QUANL PC program. Result: Three types of smoking cessation among smokers were identified. Type I, Family Centered; Type II, Suppressing Temptation; Type III, Self Overcoming. Conclusion: This study results revealed that different approaches of support programs are needed to address the three types of smoking cessation and their characteristics.

  • Purpose: Individuals' view of multiculturalism can be varied. The purpose of this study was to survey subjective view of and attitude toward multiculturalism in first-year undergraduate nursing students who had completed a multicultural subject. Methods: The Q methodology, which integrates quantitative and qualitative methods, was used. Forty one Q-statements selected from each of the 40 participants were classified into the shape of normal distribution using a nine-point scale. The collected data were analyzed using the QUANL program. Results: Two types of view of multiculturalism were identified: 'domestic type-constructive view' and 'global type-advanced view.' Conclusion: The findings show how nursing students think about multiculturalism and provide a basis for further research and education.

Exploring Science Education Anxiety Among Early Childhood Teachers Using Q-Methodology (Q 방법론을 사용한 유아교사의 과학교육에 대한 불안 탐색)

  • Objective: This study aimed to explore early childhood educators' anxiety regarding science education via Q-methodology. Methods: As the first step, 268 Q samples were collected from resources such as books and research papers related to science education for young children. Through five stages of excluding and modifying, a set of 33 Q statements was finalized. The P sample consisted of 40 early childhood educators and was based on educational levels, years of teaching experiences and types of centers. The collected data were analyzed using QUANL statistical program. Results: The results of this study indicate that science anxiety among early childhood educators are classified into four types, explaining 45.13% of the total variance. Conclusion: We conclude that early childhood educators' science anxiety stems from "preparing educational environment and materials," "instructional methods focused on process and scientific inquiry skills," "lack of understanding regarding early childhood science education," and "simple science avoidance."

Gender Role Identity of Female College Students and the Diversity of its Types (여자대학생의 성역할정체감과 그 유형의 다양성)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe the facets of gender role identity as reported by several disciplines undergraduate female college students, and to confirm the characteristics and differences according to the types. Methods: A Q sort methodology was utilized to gather responses to gender role identity. Forty subjects' responses were analyzed by QUANL PC program. Results: The subject responses were classified into four gender role patterns: 1) paternity-sensitive type, 2) conviction-sensitive type, 3) sensibility-inhibitive type and 4) sensibility-expressive type. Conclusion: The findings add to the understanding of women college students and their perception of their gender role identify. Further studies need to be done to understand how the four patterns relate to success or satisfaction for female college students.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze attitude toward dignified dying of Korean students majoring in human service area. Methods: The Q-methodology which provides a method of analyzing the subjectivity of each item was used. The 34 selected Q-statements from each of 38 subjects were classified into a shape of normal distribution using a 9 point scale. The collected data was analyzed using a QUANL PC program. Results: Four types of attitude toward dignified dying from the subjects were identified. Type I is an expression type for happy emotion, Type II is a dislike type for life prolongation, Type III is a pursuit type for relationship improvement, and Type IV is a perception type for family presence. Conclusion: The results of the study indicate that integrating multi-disciplinary curriculum development related to dignified dying and death education for students majoring in human service area are needed.

Personality-based Contraception Behavior of Female College Students (여대생들의 피임행위에 대한 주관성 연구)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the types of female college students' personality-based contraception behavior. Method: A Q-methodology was used to identify factors in female college students' personality-based contraception behavior. The 32 selected Q-sample from each of 28 subjects were classified into a shape of normal distribution using a 9 point scale. The collected data was analyzed using a QUANL PC program. Result: Three types of contraception behavior of female college students were identified. Type I is corporate responsibility, Type II is self-protection type, Type III is perceived risk of pregnancy. Conclusion: These results suggest that sexual health education for contraception behavior promotion should focus characteristics influencing on contraception attitudes. Also, efficient contraception should be educated by continuous qualitative research based on contraceptive experiences of college students.

A Study on the Life Adjustment of Widowed Elderly Women in Korea - A Q-Methodological Approach - (한국 독거 여성노인의 생활적응 - Q 방법론적 접근 -)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the types of life adjustment of widowed elderly women in Korea. Methods: The research design was a Q-Methodological Approach. Thirty selected Q-statements from 32 subjects were classified into a shape of normal distribution using a 7 point scale. The collected data was analyzed using a QUANL PC program. Results: Three types of life adjustment were identified. Type I is the independent type: overcome the reality. Type II is the abandonment type: deny the reality. Type III is the accommodation type: accept the reality. Conclusion: The results of the study indicate that different approaches to the quality of life for widowed elderly women in Korea are recommended based on the three types of life adjustment.

Mothers' Experiences of Caring for Children with Precocious Puberty: A Q-Methodological Approach (성조숙증 아동 어머니의 돌봄 경험: Q 방법론적 접근)

  • Purpose: This study explored experiences of mothers caring for children with precocious puberty. Methods: Q-methodology was used for analyzing individual subjectivity. Seventy Q-statements were selected and scored by 50 participants on an 11-point scale. The collected data were analyzed using the PC QUANL program. Results: The following eight types of care experiences of mothers of children with precocious puberty were identified: Type I-1: hypersensitive and best-result oriented, Type I-2: treatment burden, Type II-1: treatment-oriented, Type II-2: self-blame, Type III-1: accepting and compliant, Type III-2: treatment confused, Type IV-1: serious and engaged, and Type IV-2: naturalism-oriented. Conclusion: These results can help develop specific education programs based on types of care experiences for the promotion of care among mothers of children with precocious puberty.

Fear Factors in Children with Emotional and Behavioral Problems : A Q-Methodological Approach (정서·행동 문제아가 지각하는 두려움의 유형분석 : Q 방법론적 접근)

  • The structure of fears was identified and measured by Q methodology. Subjects were 40 school-aged children with emotional and behavioral problems. Subjectivity of children's fears was classified into 3 types by the QUANL program. Three types occupied 52% of all variance and correlations ranged between .31 and.52. The first type is "imaginative-sensitive perception" where children are fearful about unreal and imaginative objects related to death. The second type is "rational-empirical perception" where children are concerned about the impact of fearful objects and authoritative figures based on their own personal experience. The last type is "realistic-egocentric perception" where children are fearful of possible violence, crime, and disease.
