  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is the research of the 2D:4D ratio and its correlation with the Sasang constitution and the MBTI preference types. Methods: A measurement of the 2D:4D ratios of 101 South Korean medical students was performed, the QSCC-II and PSSC-2004 were used to diagnose the Sasang constitution, and MBTI testing was performed to classify the preference types. Results: In the relationship between the Sasang constitution and the 2D:4D ratios, a statistically significant difference is absent in the 2D:4D ratios of the group comprising both sexes in the order of Taeumin, Soyangin, and Soeumin. A statistically significant difference is also lacking in the 2D:4D ratios of the male-only group in the order of Taeumin, Soyangin, and Soeumin. The 2D:4D ratios are higher in the female group only, but again a statistically significant difference is absent. In the 2D:4D ratios according to the MBTI preference type, the 2D:4D ratios of the I, S, F, and P types are higher in the unisex group, but a significant difference is not evident. The 2D:4D ratios of the E, N, F, and P types are higher in the male-only group, but again a significant difference is not evident. In the female-only group, the mean of the 2D:4D ratios of the I, S, F, and P types is higher, but a significant difference is not identifiable. Conclusions: The Sasang constitution and the MBTI preference types did not show statistically significant differences regarding the 2D:4D ratios of the male, female, and unisex groups.

  • Objectives The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of positive and negative emotion on the quality of life(QoL) in each Sasang contitution, using Positive Affect and Negative Affect Schedule(PANAS) and Short Form-12 Health Survey Questionnaire(SF-12) questionnaire. Methods A total of 1,123 participants completed the Korean version of the PANAS and SF-12 questionnaire. The participants were classified into one Sasang constitution by QSCC II. The effects of emotion on the QoL were compared between the each Sasang contitution using analysis of variance(ANOVA). Results We found significant differences between constitutions in Positive Affect(PA), PA-Joy, PA-Interest and PA-Activation of PANAS. And we found significant differences between constitutions in Mental Component Summary(MCS) of SF-12. Negative correlation of less -0.4 was shown in Negative Affect(NA), NA-Afraid, NA-Upset of PANAS and MCS of SF-12. Conclusions The Soyangin has significantly higher score than Soeumin in PA, PA-Joy, PA-Interest and PA-Activation of PANAS as previous studies. This study also shows the correlation between negative emotion and decline in the quality of mental status.

  • Purpose: As body weight management is significantly important for women and newborn infants during pregnant and postpartum periods, there have been studies about changes of body weight during those periods. However, there are not enough studies about it which is based on the Sasang Constitution. The following is a result of the study which analyzes the changes with Sasang Constitution. Methods: This study investigated those who understand and agree this study#s purposes out of 109 primiparae who did normal delivery, who gave birth to a healthy infant and who are breastfeeding and who were treated by S postpartum care center from March 2005 to November 2005. The result of survey was collected from the questionnaires that included postpartum pattern and QSCC II. Results: There are remarkable changes of body weight and BMI based on the Sasang Constitution in pregnant and postpartum periods and they appear to be in order of Taeumin, Soyangin, Soeumin. In terms of the amount of milk according to the Constitution, there are no key changes between Soeumin and Taeumin, but there is a significance between Soyangin and Soeumin and Soyangin and Taeumin. In terms of the average body weight of infants according to the Constitution, there are no essential changes between Soeumin and Soyangin, but there is a magnitude between Soeumin and Taeumin and Soyangin and Taeumin. Conclusion: The changes of the body weight and BMI based on the Sasang Constitution appear to be the smallest for Soeumin, and the largest for Taeumin. The amount of milk from mothers did not affect on the changes and the weight of newborn infant did affect on the changes.

  • 1. Objectives : The purpose of this study was to validate the Sasang Personality Questionnaire (SPQ) with Positive And Negative Affection Schedule(PANAS) for emotionality and Body Mass Index (BMI) for body constituents. 2. Methods : The SPQ along with Questionnaire for Sasang Constitution Classification (QSCC) II, PANAS, BMI was measured with 232 College students. The correlation coefficient was measured with Pearson correlation between SPQ and PANAS, BMI. The SPQ, PANAS, and BMI score of each Sasang constitution groups based on QSCCII were compared using analysis of variance and profile analysis. 3. Results : The SPQ score of each Sasang constitution groups was significantly (p<0.01) different. The SPQ showed significant correlation with PANAS Positive Affect (r=0.201, p=0.002), but not with the BMI (r=0.097, p=0.146). The SPQ-Emotionality scale, unlike other SPQ subscales, showed positive correlation with PANAS Negative Affection. 4. Conclusions : We performed the constructive validity of SPQ using PANAS and BMI. The SPQ would be useful for the study on psychophysiological mechanism of the Sasang constitutions.

  • 1. Objectives Functional medicine is a system which utilizes certain Investigative and treatment methods that are primarily oriented toward the recognition of functional disorder. The 7-zone-diagnostic system(VEGA-DFM722 and ABR-2000, etc) is a diagnostic device which applies pulse signals to predetermined bodily locations. We think that we can discriminate between Soeumin, Soyangin and Taeumin with this system. 2. Methods The subject of our study is no disease men and women who are decided the same constitution both survey of the QSCC II and diagnosis of specialist of the Sasang Constitution. All subject are 76(Soeumin(N=24), Soyangin(N=17), Taeumin(N=35)) cases. We make an analysis of a distinctive feature on the result of the VEGA-DFM722. 3. Results and Conclusions 1) Soeumin or Taeumin women had that the red bar graphs of and 1, 2 and 3 are lower than the red bar graphs of zone 4, 5, 6 and 7 in factor AA on the result of the VEGA-DFM722 with the naked eye. Soyangin or Taeumin men had that the red bar graphs of zone 1,2 and 3 are higher than the red bar graphs of tone 4, 5, 6 and 7 in factor AA on the result of the VEGA-DFM722 with the naked eye. 2) The typical discrimination between Soeumin and Soyangin showed statistical significance(p<0.05) in Factor PF 4(red bar) on the result of VEGA-DFM722.

  • 1. Objectives As a basic trial for identification of Sasang constitutional gene marker, we genotyped and analysed statistical relationships of STR(short tandem repeat) alleles and its distribution in each constitution. 2. Methods After obtaining basic constitutional data with questionnaire (QSCC II), decision of constitution was made by 3 different constitution specialists' diagnosis, and only the samples of specialists' agreement of each constitution by discussion were taken into this research. Using multiplex PCR kit, total 146 constitutional samples were amplified in 16 autosomal STR marker, genotyped, and analysed statistically. Among 16 markers, 15 were analysed in this study excluding the amelogenin marker is used for in gender identification. 3. Results and Conclusions It is difficult to determine the relationship between constitution and STR marker as the sample size is small, however, Penta D and vWA were shown to be related statistically with constitution. It has been know that STRs has no genetic informations, however there are some recent research results showing STRs as a regulatory element, relationship between microsatellite instability and repeat number and size, and post-transcriptional sigualing. STRs which is not known about its function currently, are proposed to have function and/or regulatory activities anyhow with Sasang constitution. It is believed that the results of this study can halp determine and deatify the markers related to Sasang Constitutional Medicien.
