  • This study develops an approximate procedure for incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) using modal pushover analysis (MPA) with empirical equations of the inelastic displacement ratio ($C_R$) and the collapse strength ratio ($R_C$). By using this procedure, it is not required to conduct linear or nonlinear response history analyses of multi- or single- degree of freedom (MDF) systems. Thus, IDA curves can be effortlessly obtained. For verification of the proposed procedure, the 6-, 9- and 20-story steel moment frames are tested under an ensemble of 44 ground motions. The results show that the MPA-based IDA with empirical equations of $C_R$ and $R_C$ produced accurate IDA curves of the MDF systems. The computing time is almost negligible compared to the exact IDA using repeated nonlinear response history analysis (RHA) of a structure and the original MPA-based IDA using repeated nonlinear RHA of modal SDF systems.

  • Dynamic elastoplastic LPM (lumped parameter mass) analyses are carried out in order to investigate the seismic resistant performance of a typical high-rise shear wall apartment subjected to several earthquakes. Three-dimensional nonlinear pushover analysis is adopted to estimate initial elastic stiffness, yielding strength and post-yielding stiffness of each story for the time history analysis of LPM shear model. For the hysteresis of each story, Clough and bilinear models are used with the input of four recorded earthquake ground motions of EI Centro 1940 NS, Taft 1952 EW, Hachinohe 1968 NS and Kobe 1995 NS, of which the amplitudes are scaled down to have the same maximum ground velocity of 12 kine. The result shows that yieldings take place in most storys of the building, i.e. the earthquake resistant capacity of this high-rise shear wall apartment is not sufficient at the event of earthquake M=5~6.

  • In this study, an unbraced five-story steel-framed structure was designed in accordance with KBC2005 to understand the features of structural behavior for the arrangement of semi-rigid connections. A pushover analysis of the structural models was performed, wherein all the connections were idealized as fully rigid and semi-rigid. Additionally, horizontal and vertical arrangements of the semi-rigid connection were adopted for the models. A fiber model was utilized for the moment-curvature relationship of the steel beam and the column, and a three-parameter power model was adopted for the moment-rotation angle of the semi-rigid connection. The top displacement, base-shear force, required ductility for the connection, sequence of the plastic hinge, and design factors such as the overstrength factor, ductility factor, and response modification coefficient were investigated using the pushover analysis of a 2D structure subjected to the equivalent static lateral force of KBC2005. The partial arrangement of the semi-rigid connection was found to have secured higher strength and lateral stiffness than that of the A-Semi frame, and greater ductility than the A-Rigid frame. The TSD connection was found suitable for use for economy and safety in the sample structure.

  • The objective of present paper is to investigate elasto-plastic behaviour and estimate the resistance capacity of a beam-shear wall structural system against earthquake ground accleration exciations. Pushover analysis is adopted to estimate inttiate and post stiffnesses and yielding point for inelastic response analysis in LPM (Lumped Parameter Mass) model, and modified Clough model is used as the hysteresis rule of each story. Three earthquake waves are used in the analysis but their peak ground accelerations are changed to be 0.12g, 0.24g. It is assumed that the earthquakes act in the longigtudianl direction of a 25 Story apartment building which consists of two some unit plan. The distribution of story ratio and ductility ratio are estimated and discussed within Korean, Japanese code and UBC.

  • The pushover analysis technique is now attracting the world-wide interest for the prediction of elastic and inelastic behavior of structures in the seismic evaluation of existing buildings. However, the reliability of this analysis technique has not been fully checked by the test results in the case of structures with nonseismic details. The objective of this study is to verify the correlation between the experimental and analytical responses of a 1:12 scale 10-story reinforced concrete frame with non-seismic details by using DRAIN-2DX program and the test results performed previously. It is concluded from this comparison that the overall responses such as the relations between story shear versus interstory drift and the local deformations such as plastic rotations can be predicted with quite high reliability.

  • In many structures, the masonry infill panels have been used for architectural reasons and their influence on the structure is often ignored by engineers. However, it has been recognized that the presence of masonry infills may debates. Recently, the pushover analysis technique is used for the prediction of the inelastic behaviors of structures in the seismic evaluation of existing buildings. However, the reliability of this analysis method has not been fully checked with the test results, particularly in the case of masonry-infilled frames. The objective of this study is to verify the correlation between the experimental and analytical reponses of a high-rise masonry-infilled reinforced concrete frame using DRAIN-2DX program and the test results performed previously. It is concluded from this comparison that the strength and stiffness of members can be predicted with quite high reliability while the ductility capacity of members can not be described reasonably.

  • Nonseismic designed RC frame have a possibility of shear failure because of deficiencies of reinforcing details. To model the shear failure in numerical analysis, shear strength degradation models which include Moehle's and ATC 40 are compared and applied to push-over analysis. For numerical analysis, three storied building frame is selected and designed according to Korean Concrete Design Code(2003). From the numerical analysis, it is pointed out that there may be great difference in lateral drift capacity if a different shear strength model is used. And the capacity can be severely underestimated if the restraining model of plastic rotation of ATC 40 is used, compared to the use of shear spring for shear degradation.

  • Since the modal pushover analysis (MPA) is introduced by A.K.Chopra in 2002, it has been the leading procedure for the seismic evalution of structures. However it has scarcely used on bridge structures dueing to its inherent limitation. In this paper, MPA is applied on cable-stayed bridges to check its applicability on such structures.

  • The capacity spectrum method(CSM) can be used for the evaluation of inelastic maximum response of structures and has been recently used in the seismic design using the incorporation of pushover analysis and response spectrum method. To efficiently evaluate seismic performance of multi-degree-of freedom(MDOF) bridge structures, it is important that the equivalent response of MDOF bridge structures should be calculated. To calculate the equivalent response of MDOF system, equivalent responses are obtained by using Song method, Fajfar method and Calvi method. Also, those responses are applied to CSM method and seismic performance of bridge according to the ESDOF method are compared and evaluated straightforwardly.
