  • Purpose: This study is aimed at finding the conditions of ametropia of adults in the Philippines and the South Korean. Methods: The study objects were 7,695(15,390 eyes) Koreans and 2,256(4,512 eyes) Philippines who visited optic clinics and took refraction test. The distributions of their hypermetropias and myopias about astigmatisms were examined, using the method of equivalent spherical power. When astigmatisms were marked in S-C, cylinder lens diopter and astigmatism axis, presbyopic additions and pupillary distances were analyzed by comparison respectively. Results: Among ametropias of Koreans myopias and hypermetropias were 93.69% and 6.31% respectively and about ametropias of Philippines myopia and hypermetropias were 73.43% and 26.57% respectively. As for spherical equivalent power about Koreans, the results showed that Koreans marked -3.352 D about myopia and Philippines marked -2.213 D about it. There is a gap of -1.139 D between them. About hypermetropia Koreans marked 1.147 D and Philippines, 1.251 D and their gap is 0.104 D. As for ametropia of Koreans there is 49.86% in middle myopia, 32.28% about low myopia, 11.55% about high myopia, and 5.54% about low hypermetropia, 0.75% about middle hypermetropia. As for it about Philippines there is 44.53% in low myopia, 25.11% about middle myopia, 3.79% high myopia and 23.03% low hypermetropia, and 3.51% low hypermetropia respectively. As for cylinder lens there is differences of 0.194 D and 0.22 D between Korean and Philippine for both sexes. Totally Koreans have higher cylinders of 0.175 D than Philippines. As for astigmatism, Koreans have direct astigmatism, inverse astigmatism, and oblique astigmatism in their suffering sequence. As for Philippines, they have direct astigmatism, inverse stigmatism, and oblique astigmatism in their abnormal sequence, and they have higher oblique stigmatism than Koreans. As for presbyopic addition, Philippines have higher distributions than Koreans, and 0.296 D is higher in average. As for pupillary distance, Koreans have longer distance of 0.97 mm in man and 0.63 mm in women than Philippines. Conclusions: As for ametropia, Koreans and Philippines have more myopias than hypermetropias, but Philippines have more rates of hypermetropias than Koreans. And Philippines have more presbyopic additions. Koreans have higher morbidity of inverse astigmatism, and Philippines have higher morbidity of oblique astigmatism comparatively. As for pupillary distance, Koreans have longer length in the body characteristics. This shows that geographical circumstances have much to do with refraction conditions of eyes.

  • Iris recognition system is the one of the most reliable biometries recognition system. An algorithm is proposed to determine the localized iris from the iris image received from iris input camera in client. For the first step, the algorithm determines the center of pupil. For the second step, the algorithm determines the outer boundary of the iris and the pupillary boundary. The localized iris area is transformed into polar coordinates. After performing three times Wavelet transformation, normalization was done using a sigmoid function. The converting binary process performs normalized value of pixel from 0 to 255 to be binary value, and then the converting binary process is compared pairs of two adjacent pixels. The binary code of the iris is transmitted to the server by the network. In the server, the comparing process compares the binary value of presented iris to the reference value in the database. The process of recognition or rejection is dependent on the value of Hamming Distance. After matching the binary value of presented iris with the database stored in the server, the result is transmitted to the client.

  • This study was designed as a reference of vertical dimension in prosthetic treatment. The author analyzed six facial measurements, namely, (1) the height of lower face at maximum intercuspal position, (2) the height of lower face at resting position, (3) midface, (4) external ear and lateral wall of orbit, (5) interpupillary distance, (6) distance between pupil and mouth in the 100 Won-kwang Univ. Dental collage students(50 : male, 50 : female), who have normal occlusion, no posterior prosthesis, no experience of orthodontic treatment, and no deformity of facial soft tissue and no temporomandibular dysfunction. The results of this study were as follows : 1. The length of midface was shortest and the inter-pupillary distance was longest in both male and female. 2. The length difference with the length of midface and lower face at maximum intercuspal position was 5.64mm in male and 2.23mm in female, so the lower face was longer, 3. The facial measuring component, similar to lower face at maximum intercuspation, was the length of between medial wall of external ear and lateral wall of orbit. It's difference was 1.3mm in male, 1.77mm in female, and the lower face was shorter. 4. The difference of lower facial length in resting position and maximum intercuspation was 2.48mm in male, 2.24mm in female, the length of resting position was therefore longer. 5. The most clost correlation with the height of maximum intercuspal positioning lower face was resting lower face in both groups.

  • Purpose: In this study, dynamic stereoacuity of 20s' adults were measured by using the Howard-Dolman test(H-D TEST, Bernell, U.S.A), and compared of male and female. And the correlation between dynamic stereoacuity and PD(pupillary distance), and between dynamic stereoacuity and anisometropia caused by difference in the spherical refractive power of the left and right eyes were analyzed. Methods: The mean age of $22.68{\pm}0.50$(20~29)years old, 20s' 63 adults (30 male, 33 female) were conducted for this experiments. After the full correction of subject's refractive error, dynamic stereoacuity was measured 5 times for 1 subject at 2.5 m distance using the H-D test. at 2.5 distance. Results: The mean of dynamic stereoacuity was $28.44{\pm}25.03$ sec of arc for total subjects, $28.23{\pm}23.34$ sec of arc for male, and $28.63{\pm}26.83$ sec of arc for female. In the dynamic stereoacuity classified by the range of inter-pupil distance (IPD), the dynamic stereoacuity was $33.87{\pm}18.53$ sec for the IPD being under 59.80 mm, $26.24{\pm}25.26$ sec of arc for 59.81~66.15 mm, $34.60{\pm}25.65$ sec of arc for over 66.15 mm. However, there were no significant differences between 3 groups (P=0.73, r=0.03). In dynamic stereoacuity classified by the refractive error difference between two eyes, dynamic stereoacuity was $26.81{\pm}24.86$ sec of arc for the under 1 D, $41.45{\pm}24.18$ sec of arc for over 1 D, and there was no significant difference between two groups (P=0.15, r=0.15). Conclusions: Dynamic stereacuity by the H-D test in 20s adults showed that there was no significant differences between male and female, and PD and anisometropia did not have a significant impact upon the dynamic stereoacuity.

  • This study investigated that total 1071 reading glasses wearers (male 432, female 639) without any eye disease or deformation in eyelid, orbit, eyeball (over 50 years old), were tested. Reading pupillary distance of 524 (male 202, female 322) of 1071 were examined and reading glasses power was examined for all 1071 patients. As a result of average reading diopters analysis by sex. male had S+2.34Dptr, female had S+2.23Dptr in average and male had a little more average power than female by 0.11Dptr. However, the difference was not much enough and by aging accommodation reduction changes were applied to both male and female. After dividing ready-made reading glasses on sale in optical shops into 5 groups by F.P.D. the average D.B.O.C(distance between optical centers) of each 5 group was examined (1st group 64.04 mm, 2nd group 66.96 mm, 3rd group 68.28 mm, 1th group 62.03 mm, 5th group 72.00 mm : the average of all groups was 66.96 mm : each group included 3 random samples : 195 ready-made reading glasses were measured), and compared with the average reading P.D of males and females (male 60.04 mm, female 58.23 mm). The result showed D.B.O.C of ready-made reading glasses on sale was bigger than the average reading P.D of them. The result reviewed the average range for male was $0.23{\Delta}(minimum){\sim}5.06{\Delta}(maximum)$, and for female was $0.46{\Delta}{\sim}5.79{\Delta}$. In conclusion when wearing ready-made reading glasses, female got more effected by average $0.45{\Delta}$ because reading P.D of female was smaller than that of male.

  • In todays security industry, personal identification is also based on biometric. Biometric identification is performed basing on the measurement and comparison of physiological and behavioral characteristics, Biometric for recognition includes voice dynamics, signature dynamics, hand geometry, fingerprint, iris, etc. Iris can serve as a kind of living passport or living password. Iris recognition system is the one of the most reliable biometrics recognition system. This is applied to client/server system such as the electronic commerce and electronic banking from stand-alone system or networks, ATMs, etc. A new algorithm using nonlinear function in recognition process is proposed in this paper. • The aim of this study was to provide data for the relief of asthenopia during binocular vision by determining the characteristics of ocular function in adults. A total of 260 subjects were between the age of 19-35years. We measured individually the refractive error correction, pupillary distance, optical center distance, phoria, convergence, accommodation and the AC/A as well as the asthenopia during binocular vision using a questionnaire. After analysis of factors affecting asthenopia, we also examined the reductive effect of asthenopia in subjects who had asthenopia using prism. To determine the factors affecting asthenopia during binocular vision, statistic analyses were carried out the multivariate Logistic regression model. The results of this study were as follow. The asthenopia during binocular vision was found 26.9% of subjects. Multivariate logistic regression model was used to determine factors affecting binocular vision of myopia. When the accommodation and convergence were low compared to being high, when subjects had esophoria or there was more exophoria, and when AC/A was lower than the standard, the rate of asthenopia was higher. Therefore the accommodation, convergence and AC/A could be predictive factors for asthenopia. We used prism for subjects who had asthenopia during binocular vision, the results showed that the symptom of asthenopia was eased up to 74.3%.
