  • In order to investigate the possible application of immobilized yeast cells in sparkling wine production instead of riddling puns by the traditional method, fermentation characteristics were tested during the sparkling wine fermentation in the bottle using immobilized yeast cells with alginate. The rates of sugar consumption and alcohol production were faster with free cells than those with immobilized cells during the fermentation. The higher concentration of yeast cells and the lower concentration of alginate in the cell immobilization resulted in the faster sugar consumption and alcohol production. It also resulted in the increase of yeast cell concentration released from immobilized beads during the fermentation. However, no differences were shown in the contents of alcohol, residual sugar and CO2 pressure after fermentation. In case concentration of yeast cells released from immobilized beads during bottle fermentation, the higher concentration of alginate had and the lower had.

  • The purpose of this paper is to scrutinize how Parks recalling, deconstructing and reconstructing African-American memories of the absences in American history through a black Lincoln impersonator named, The Foundling Father or The Lesser Known. Parks unearths and reconstitutes a significance for the historical event of Lincoln's assassination by repetitive mimicry and verbal puns. As a pun of the Founding Father, the Foundling Father reminds us of Abraham Lincoln, one of the most venerated figures in American history. In the first act, the black Foundling Father performs as The Great Man. This inverted minstrel show of the black Foundling Father performing a white Lincoln exposes the desire of the Foundling Father to insert his narrative within the history of America. With a series of assassinations, the African-American performers figuratively murder the power and control of the American myth. In the second act, his wife Lucy and his son Brazil dig relics from the past out of 'The great hole of history' instead of the Foundling Father. Digging and burial for African-Americans are their livelihood and their calling as well. As Parks pointed out, they should locate the ancestral buried ground, dig for bones and find bones because so much of African-American history has been unrecorded, dismembered and washed out. Parks leaves the possibilities of digging and burying on the black history through Lucy and Brazil.

  • During the reign of King Sejong (世宗, 1418-1450) in the Joseon Dynasty, there were lots of astronomical instruments, including miniaturized ones. Those instruments utilized the technical know-how acquired through building contemporary astronomical instruments previously developed in the Song(宋), Jin(金), and Yuan(元) dynasties of China. In those days, many astronomical instruments had circles, rings, and spheres carved with a scale of 365.25, 100, and 24 parts, respectively, on their circumference. These were called the celestial-circumference degree, hundred-interval (Baekgak), and 24 direction, respectively. These scales are marked by the angular distance, not by the angle. Therefore, these circles, rings, and spheres had to be optimized in size to accomodate proper scales. Assuming that the scale system is composed of integer multiples of unit length, we studied the sizes of circles by referring to old articles and investigating existing artifacts. We discovered that the star chart of Cheonsang yeolcha bunyajido was drawn with a royal standard ruler (周尺) based on the unit length of 207 mm. Interestingly, its circumference was marked by the unit scale of 3 puns per 1 du (or degree) like Honsang (a celestial globe). We also found that Hyeonju ilgu (a equatorial sundial) has a Baekgak disk on a scale of 1 pun per 1 gak (that is an interval of time similar to a quarter). This study contributes to the analysis of specifications of numerous circular elements from old Korean astronomical instruments.

  • This study aims to understand the possibility of small city marketing strategies using B-grade cultural contents. This research focused on the case of Chungju City which applied B-grade cultural contents to city marketing. The process using B-grade cultural contents to small city marketing was investigated and hash-tags and comments on social media were coded and analyzed based on grounded theory. Also, the details were examined through in-depth interviews with the local government official in charge. The result has shown the characteristics of B-grade cultural contents describing the differences from the original B-grade culture as subcuture. First, publicity materials showed the characteristics of general B-grade culture such as retro, puns, and escape, showing the process of communication/participation/empathy. Second, improbability, intertextuality, extensibility, subversiveness, and authenticity were the five main factors for responses and empathy from the audience. Third, the ripple effect was formed through the simple narrative structure of 'intro-conclusion'. Finally B-grade cultural contents of Chungju showed new possibilities for sustainable small city marketing through the formation of new cultural assets.

  • A term that has been used since ancient times, 'trickster' means 'a person who performs general tricks'. In other words, a trickster is a person who exhibits his or her intrinsic characteristics by using tricks, or who has a special ability to make any situation work well only for him or herself. This thesis looks for basic concepts and features of tricksters in research undertaken into tricksters to date. It also aims to uncover the trickster side of Maltugi in Talchum (a traditional mask dance). A trickster is a person who tricks, but the characteristic itself is unclear and abnormal. A trickster also has borderline, duplicitous or multi-value characteristics, so it is impossible to merely define him or her as 'a person who tricks'. When dealing with a trickster's characteristics, the 'Liminality' element is very important, because he or she is a person who exists in all the borderlines of space, time, society, and language, and assaults the social order via deceit, play, and the fulfillment of greed. Maltugi in Talchum is a man of humble birth, but he is a character who attacks the Yangban (aristocrats) without hesitation. He is a kind of representative of the people who speaks for the commoners' feelings. At a time of the Three Policies' Disorder and frequent external aggressions, the commoners felt a sense of helplessness against the Yangban, who they viewed as immoral. Maltugi laughs at and depreciates the Yangban through the use of puns, and shows a faithful attitude to the present without being afraid of the result caused by his activity. This implies that he has the characteristics of a trickster.
