Physical and microstructural properties of Pungchon and Maggol limestone were investigated quantitatively during 50 cycles of artificial freezing and thawing test. There were decrease in dry weight and P,S-wave velocity, and increase in absorption rate in both rock types. Porosity, pore volume, equivalent diameter, throat thickness and pore orientation were analyzed using X-ray computed tomography images. Porosity increased, and initiation and expansion of pores were investigated as weathering progresses. Physical and microstructural variation in Maggol limestone was larger than that of Pungchon limestone because Maggol limestone has more pores and microcracks at initial state. As this study analyzes physical and microstructural properties of rock specimens comprehensively, it can be applied to further rock weathering study and can be used as fundamental data of construction and resource development in cold regions.
The purpose of this research is to investigate the dispersion pattern of gold during skarnization and genesis of gold mineralization in the Sangdong skarn deposits. The Sangdong scheelite orebodies are embedded in the Cambrian Pungchon Limestone and limestone interbedded in the Myobong Slate of the Cambrian age. The tungsten deposits are classified as the Hangingwall Orebody, the Main Orebody and the Footwall Orebody as their stratigraphic locations. Recently, the Sangdong granite of the Cretaceous age (85 Ma) were found by underground exploratory drillings below the orebodies. In geochemisty, the W, Mo, Bi and F concentrations in the granite are significantly higher than those in the Cretaceous granitoids in southern Korea. Highest gold contents are associated with quartz-hornblende skarn in the Main Orebody and pyroxene-hornblende skarn in the Hangingwall Orebody. Also Au contents are closely related to Bi contents. This could be inferred that Au skarns formed from solutions under reduced environment at a temperature of $270^{\circ}C$. According to the multiple regression analysis, the variation of Au contents in the Main Orebody can be explained (87.5%) by Ag, As, Bi, Sb, Pb, Cu. Judging from the mineralogical, chemical and isotope studies, the genetic model of the deposits can be suggested as follows. The primitive Sangdong magma was enriched in W, Mo, Au, Bi and volatiles (metal-carriers such as $H_2O$, $CO_2$ and F). During the upward movement of hydrothermal ore solution, the temperature was decreased, and W deposits were formed at limestone (in the Myobong Slate and Pungchon Limestone). In addition, meteoric water influx gave rise to the retrogressive alterations and maximum solubility of gold, and consequently higher grade of Au mineralization was deposited.
This research is focused on an improvement of additional value of high grade limestone. To obtain the basic data of precipitated calcium carbonate(PCC), studies of physical properties of limestone, calcination and hydration characteristics, the characteristics to manufacture quick lime, hydrated lime, ground calcium carbonate and precipitated calcium carbonate were performed. In the carbonation process, formation of rombohedral must be kept under $10^{\circ}C$ for reaction. Although the temperature of reaction of lime milk was limited under $30^{\circ}C$ for a colloidal PCC manufacture, over $50^{\circ}C$ for spindle type PCC. The recommended reaction conditions for colloidal PCC are $20^{\circ}C$ of reaction temperature, 4% of $Ca(OH)_2$ concentration, 1000rpm of stirring rate and 200ml/min of $CO_2$ gas flow rate.
The Second Yeon Hwa Mine which belongs to a so called Lead-Zines Belt Area in the central east Korea is located at about 10 km northeast of the Seogpo railway station on Yeongdong Line. The exploitation of the mine started in June, 1969 and furnished the machinary ore dressing plant in November, 1971. The current monthly production of rude ore is 15,000 meteric tons. The results of the study on the lead-zinc-copper deposits of the Second Yeonhwa mine are summerized as follows: (1) main ore deposits of the mine are localized in the Pungchon Limestion formation of Cambrian age, (2) related ingneous rock with ore deposits is granite porphyry, which distributed in NS and $N50^{\circ}W$ trend, (3) ore solution ascended along the $N50^{\circ}W$ trend which represents folding axis and fault plane and mineralized selectively in the limestone formation. (4) high grade ore deposits are localized in concave and convex boundaries of granite porphyry, and hanging walls of shale bed ($P_2S$ shale bed) in Pungchon Limestone formation and (5) skarn minerals are consisted of garnet, hedenbergite, diopside, and sulfide minerals are composed of zincblenede, galena, phyrhotite, pyrite and some amount of chalcopyrite and arsenopyrite.
${\delta}^{13}C$ and ${\delta}^{18}O$ values were determined for the Paleozoic limestones (Great Linestone Series) from the Taebaegsan region and the age-unknown limestones (Janggun Formation) from the Janggun mine, Korea. Limestones of the Great Limestone Series exhibit a range of carbon isotopic composition from -4.5 +1.3‰ with a mean ${\delta}^{13}C$ value of -1.1‰, relative to the PDB standard, and of oxygen isotpic composition from +8.8 to +23.3‰ with a mean ${\delta}^{18}O$ value of +16.0‰, relative to the SMOW, falling into the normal marine limestone range according to Keith and Weber (1964), and Degens and Epstein(1964). Carbon isotopic composition of limestones of the Great Limestone Series becomes progressively lighter from Pungchon limestone of middle Cambrian age to mid-Ordovician Maggol limestone, possibly due to change in depositional environment in the Taebaegsan basin. Variation in isotopic composition of limestones from Hwajeol to Dumugal formation offers the possibility or deposition in shallow sea environment, in which fresh waters were added in several stages. Janggun limestone of unknown age may be corelated with the Paleozoic limestones of Great Limestone Series as infered from the istopic composition ranging from -2.8 to + 0.7‰ of ${\delta}^{13}C$ and +13.4 to +22.4‰ of ${\delta}^{18}O$.
Tungsten skarn mineralization of the Sangdong mine is localized in the interbedded limestone layers of the Myobong Slate Formation and in the limestone of the Pungchon Limestone Formation of Cambrian age. Fluid inclusion, gas composition and Nd-Sr isotope for granites and skarns have been investigated. Gas compositions show $CO_2$ rich in the Sangdong granite and CH, rich in the Nonggeori and Eopyeong granites. The initial $^{87}Sr/^{86}Sr$ and $^{143}Nd/^{144}Nd$ ratios of the Sangdong granites have 0.714~0.716(${\varepsilon}_{Sr}$=138~162) and 0.51173~0.51178(${\varepsilon}_{Nd}$=-14.4~15.5), respectively. And their two stage model ages range from 1687 to 1764 Ma. The granite characterized by high strontium initial ratios and negative eNd value could have originated from the old continental crust source. Low homogenization temperature of the Sangdong granite having $203{\sim}296^{\circ}C$ with 1.9~9.2 NaCl equiv. wt% indicates the post-magmatic hydrothermal alteration temperature. Skarn ore fluid responsible for tungsten mineralization has been evolved from CH, rich fluid of early pyroxene garnet skarn to $CO_2$ rich later quartz-mica skarn.

The mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of diverse carbonate rocks can be investigated by using VNIRSWIR(visible near infrared-short wavelength infrared) spectroscopic analysis as a rapid, nondestructive, and inexpensive tool. Comparing whole rock analysis to VNIR-SWIR spectroscopic analysis, the analytical method was investigated to estimate CaO contents, mud impurity, and whiteness of carbonate rocks involved in high-grade limestones in the field. We classify typical carbonate rocks in the upper Pungchon Formation in high-grade limestone mine area such as the Gangweon, Chungmu and Baegun mine in the Jeongseon area. The results show that powdered specimen has much higher reflectance than cutted specimen between the same sample. Whiteness is highly correlated with reflectance(0.99) for powdered specimen. The absorption of mineral mixtures shifts in position as a result of the mass ratio of calcite and dolomite in the Chungmu mine by changing to 75:25, 50:50, and 25:75. The absorption peak position in carbonate mixtures is highly correlated with CaO contents(0.98~0.99). Based on color system, the carbonate rocks are grouped into (milky) white, light grey, light brown, grey, and dark grey. The absorption peak position shifts from 2340 nm to 2320 nm as CaO contents decrease from 55.86 wt.% to 29.71 wt.%. We confirmed that absorption peak position shifts depending on the amount of Ca, which is bonded to $CO{_3}^{-2}$, Mg, and Fe contents replacing Ca. This result suggests that CaO contents in carbonate rocks can be considered to quantitative analysis in the field by spectroscopic analysis.
Domestic marbles are mostly distributed in Gyeonggi and Yeongnam Massifs, southwest and northeast Ogcheon Belts, which belong to Precambrian, age-unknown, Cambrian-Ordovician ages, respectively. The former marbles occur as interbedded rocks in metasediments and xenoliths in granitic gneisses. Age-unknown ones occur as interbedded in the formations of Hyangsanri, Gyeomyeongsan, Hwajeonri and Munjuri, and some in metasedimentary rocks. The latter ones occur as interbedded in Pungchon Limestone, and in Jeongseon Limestone, Hwacheonri Formation and Great Limestone Group, respectively. Among physical properties, porosity shows irregular patterns to density and compressive strength, respectively. Absorption ratio has a linear pattern of positive trend to porosity, and compressive strength mostly shows a positive trend to tensile strength. Compressive strengths of the marbles are as follows : Precambrian $1,106{\;}kg/\textrm{cm}^2$, age-unknown $935{\;}kg/\textrm{cm}^2$. Cambrian $1,162{\;}kg/\textrm{cm}^2$ and Ordovician $1,560{\;}kg/\textrm{cm}^2$, respectively. Tensile strengths have decreasing trends as the above order of geologic age. In diagrams of major elements, $Al_2O_3,{\;}Fe_2O_{3(t)}{\;}and{\;}Na_2O+K_2O$ generally show positive trends with increasing $v_2$. MgO/CaO of Precambrian and age-unknown marbles have much higher values than Cambrian and Ordovician marbles as follows, Precambrian 0.31, age-unknown 0.30, Cambrian 0.03 and Ordovician 0.08. And MgO shows a negative trend with increasing CaO, which nay be caused by dolomitization. By MgO contents they can be classified into calcitic dolomite, dolomitic limestone, limestone and dolomitic limestone, respectively.
This study is aimed to emphasize the significance of ore selection in lime manufacturing through the evaluation of applied-mineralogical impact factors of crude ores controlling calcination characteristics for some domestic limestones used currently for lime manufacturing. To do this work, systematic characterization and determination were carried out for the limestone ores and their calcination products in a fixed calcining condition (target temperature: $1000^{\circ}C$, retention time: 30 minutes, 2, 4, 10, 16 hours), and the results were correlated and discussed. Selected high-Ca limestones in this study are as much as > 98 wt%, but they are somewhat diverse in crystallinity, texture, and impurity composition. Synthesized quicklimes are varied depending on such a difference in ore characters. The Pungchon limestone has relatively very low calcination rate, and the limestones from the Gabsan formation and the Jeongseon formation exhibit good quality in calcination rate and decrepitation. Among these samples, the limestone ore from the Jeongseon formation is evaluated to be the best for crude ore in manufacturing of highly-reactive quicklime. In addition, it is characteristic that the Gabsan limestone comparative rich in Fe-bearing mineral such as pyrite and goethite is more conspicuous in sintering effect.
The Baegjeon Au-Ag and Sb deposits, small of disseminated-type gold deposits are formed as a result of epithermal processes associated a shallow-seated Cretaceous Yeogdun granitoids intrusion. The orebodies are formed by the replacement of carbonate minerals in thin-bedded oolitic limestone beds favorable for mineralization within the upper-most Cambrian Pungchon Limestone Formation. The mineralization can be recognized one stage, ore minerals composed of base metal sulfides, electrum, AgSb-S, Ag-Cu-S, and Sb-S minerals. Gold-bearing minerals consist of electrum and submicroscopic invisible gold in pyrite and arsenopyrite. The composition of electrums ranges from 33.58 to 63.48 atomic % Ag. Fluid inclusion studies reveal that ore fluids were low saline $NaCl-CO_2-H_2O$ system. Temporary fluid mixing and boiling occured in later stage. Fluid inclusion data indicates the homogenization temperatures and salinities of NaCl eqivalent wt% were 176 to $246^{\circ}C$ and from 0.0 to 4.8 wt%, respectively. And $-logfs_2$, of mineralization obtained by thermodynamic considerations as 12.4 to 13.8 atm. The ${\delta}^{34}S_{H_2S}$, values of hydrothermal sulfides were calculated to be 6.8 to 10.2‰ which was of sedimentary origin. The ${\delta}^{18}O_{H_2O}$ and ${\delta}^{13}C_{CO_2}$, range from -3.9 to 9.6‰, from -1.1 to -2.2‰, and ${\delta}D$ range from -89 to -118‰, respectively. The Au deposition during mineralization seems to have occurred as a result of decrease of temperature, $fs_2$, $fo_2$, and pH probably due to oxidation by meteoric water mixing, which destabilized original $Au(HS)^-{_2}$. The mineralization of the Baegjeon deposits is similar to the Carlin-type deposits characterized by sediments-hosted epithermal bedding replacement disseminated gold deposits.
