Performance Test of 200-MW Pulse Transformer for 80-MW Klystron Load (80-MW 클라이스트론 부하용 200-MW 펄스 트랜스포머의 성능시험)

  • A pulse transformer producing pulses with the peak power of 200-MW (400 kV 500 A at load side with $4.4{\mu}s$ flat-top) is required to drive the 80-MW pulsed klystron in the PLS linac. We have designed and manufactured the high power pulse transformer with 1 : 17 turn ratio. Its primary functions are to match the impedance of klystron tube to the modulators, and to provide step-up of the voltage. To obtain a fast rise time of the pulse voltage. Low leakage inductance and low distributed capacitance design is very important. In this paper, we discuss the equivalent circuit analysis of the pulse transformer, and present the full power performance test results of pulse transformer.

  • The main purpose of this work is to investigate the effects of the wall thickness, the ultrasonic frequency, and the acoustic impedance of wall material on the liquid-film thickness measurement by an ultrasonic pulse echo method. A series of liquid-film thickness measurements in a horizontal air-water stratified system was performed employing a plate-type and a tube-type test sections. Measurements were repeated changing (1) the wall thickness of the test section and (2) the transducer frequency. Also, in an effort to improve the accuracy of the measurement and to exam me the effect of acoustic impedance of wall material on the measurement by an ultrasonic technique, two different stand-off rods, one made of stainless steel and the other polyacrylate, were used in the liquid-film thickness measurement. These experimental results are discussed and compared with the actual film thicknesses.

  • The Korean Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) tokamak device is being constructed to perform long-pulse, high-beta, advanced tokamak fusion physics experiments. The long-pulse operation requires the non-inductive current drive system such as the Lower-Hybrid Current Drive (LHCD) system. The LHCD system drives the non-inductive plasma current by means of C-band RF with 2-MW CW power and 5-GHz frequency. For the LHCD test experiments, an RF test system is developed. It is composed of a 5-GHz, 1.5-MW pulsed magnetron and a compact pulse modulator with $4\;{\mu}s$ of pulse width. The pulse modulator provides the maximum output voltage of 45 kV and the maximum current of 90 A. It is composed of 7 stages of Pulse Forming Network (PFN), a thyratron tube (E2V, CX1191D), and a pulse transformer with 1:4 step-up ratio. In this paper, the detailed design and the performance test of the pulse modulator are presented.

  • Most of the Stirling cryocoolers used for infrared detector cooling in domestic is imported. Because the cooler has a high price, short life and poor durability, demand for the coolers continues steadily. However, the cooler is highly related to defense and space technology, technology transfer or co-development with the countries having experties in cooler design is very limited. The pulse tube cooler to be developed in this study is such that the mechanical piston in low temperature actuating part is replaced by the gas piston and linear compressor is adopted, which results in low vibration, long life and better durability. It is expected that development of the pulse tube cooler will not only improve our technology to the level of advanced countries, but also enhance the skills in designing and manufacturing of the infrared detector.

  • The nuclear steam generators are subjected to corrosion environmental condition during operation that can result in stress corrosion in the tube wall. If any tube wall degradation is recognized, the tube must be repaired by plugging or sleeving. For the sleeving repair, Nd : YAG laser welded sleeving technology is one of the most promising when considering radioactive working conditions in the nuclear power plant. In this paper, the laser welding characteristics of steam generator tube and sleeve materials are investigated. The effects of average laser power, laser energy, welding speed, pulse duration and frequency are evaluated. Based on these results, Nd : YAG laser welded sleeving repair was applied to the degraded steam generator tubes in real environment.

  • In this paper, a current-source type parallel indudor compensated load resonant high-frequency soft switching inverter using IGBTs for driving the newly-produced silent discharge type ozone generating tube and excimer lamp for UV generation which incorporate a single switched capacitor resonant snubber between the port in DC busline side is presented, together with its pulse modulated unique output power regulation characteristics.

  • A gas fueling system composed of a gas reservoir, an on-off valve, and a gas transferring tube, which is the simplest construction for the pre-programmed gas puffing, was simulated by numerically solving the time-dependent one-dimensional gas flow equation. The purpose of the simulation is to establish the relationship between the gas flow pattern (the elapsed time to the maximum flow, the maximum flow rate, the gas pulse duration) and the system parameters (the filling pressure and the volume of the gas reservoir, and the length and the diameter of the gas transferring tube).

  • The cleaning characteristics of pulse air jet type cleaning system which is widely applied in the industries were identified by utilizing the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and the cleaning performance in modified shape of dedusting unit was compared in this study. The review on each shape of cleaning part showed that the case of installing the nozzle on the blow tube (Case-3) and the case of installing the double intaking tube to the venturi (Case-4 and Case-5) were more excellent than the structure (Case-1). Also, the optimal venturi shape was designed and examined its applicability to the site in a pilot scale plant. A combined system of a blow tube and a venturi proposed by this study turned out to be very effective for concentrating an cleaning air compared to existing systems, such as using only blow tube and combines the blow tube and venturi. In addition, as a result of installing and testing a venturi proposed by this study, the cleaning frequency and cleaning time were much improved compared to a case of using a commercial venturi that is under use at the industrial sites.

  • The dual pulse rocket motor is a pressure vessel containing two pulse grains separated by a pulse separation device such as a fragile bulkhead. One of the important things in this systems is case insulation design using the excellent materials in the 1st stage pulse motor. We investigated manufacturing process of fabric/EPDM chamber insulations in order to protect the 1st stage pulse motor case with high intensity gas flow. Simulation motor connected with extension tube having FRP disc was designed to study ablation characteristics of insulation.
