A laser ultrasonic inspection system is a non-contact inspection device which generates and measures ultrasounds by using laser beams. A laser ultrasonic inspection system provides a high measurement resolution because the ultrasonic signal generated by a pulse laser beam has a wide-band spectrum and the ultrasonic signal is measured from a small focused spot of a measuring laser beam. In this paper, we have investigated the detection techniques of a surface-breaking crack by using the laser ultrasonic surface waves. A crack acts as a low pass filter whose cut-off frequency is lowered in proportion to the depth of a crack. And, the center frequency value of a spectrum is decreased in proportion to the depth of a crack. In this paper, we extracted the crack information by using the frequency attenuation from the normalized transfer function spectrum of a surface-breaking crack. Also, we effectively measured the crack depth by using the decreasing value of the center frequency from a crack passed ultrasonic signal. The proposed measuring techniques of crack depths provided more precise information than the amplitude measuring technique.

It has not been performed to inspect the underclad cracking of nuclear pressure vessel in Korea since there is no code requirements for inspection. However, underclad cracks in nuclear pressure vessels have been reported since the early 1970s. The aim of this experiment is to find the suitable ultrasonic inspection techniques for underclad cracking. The various transducers, for example $70_{\backprime}$ refracted longitudinal wave, 50/70 multibeam, SLIC-40, SLIC-50, are used in this investigation. Experiments on prescreening blocks and a demonstration block under the same condition as in the nuclear power pressure vessels show that the $70_{\backprime}$ refracted longitudinal wave method is the best one for the length evaluation and also gives a good signal pattern for detection of the crack, while the 50/70 multibeam transducer is more effective for the detection of underclad cracking. On the other hand, the SLIC-50 transducer using M-SPOT(Satellite Pulse Observation Technique) and M-PET (Peak-Echo Technique) methods is the most effective one for the depth of underclad crack estimation.
To investigate the in-situ sound velocity of sediment in the southwestern part of the East Sea, the laboratory sound velocity was measured using the pulse transmission technique. The sediment sound velocity measured in laboratory was corrected to in-situ sound velocity based on the seafloor temperature, seawater sound velocity, Kim et al. (2004) model, and Hamilton (1980) model. The distribution of the corrected in-situ sound velocity applying Kim et al. (2004) and Hamilton (1980) models reflects the characteristics of sediments of the study area and shows a similar distribution pattern. The correction for in-situ sound velocity was mostly influenced by seafloor temperature. Then, correction of sound velocity using seafloor sediment temperature data should be accomplished for conversion of laboratory data to in-situ sound velocity.

Generally, laser machines with high generated power can be developed by means of enhancing their mean power, since the enhancement of mean power exerts an influence on peripheral parameters and machining performance. In this research, we evaluate the various machining properties by the use of two machines which bear different mean power each other, so that we may study various effects of the enhancement of mean power. As a result, when the mean power comes to be enhanced to 75%, we obtain the increase of output energy up to 69% and of peak power more than 95%, and also obtain almost twice of the cutting speed. Moreover we find the fact that if the test pieces have enough thickness in contrast with output energy, the pulse frequency moves toward the frequency bandwidth which takes proportion to the cutting speed mas well as to the amount of material removal per unit time. In addition it is finally obtained that the laser machine with high output power yields small taper degrees at kerf parts, while it has large cutting widiths and dross lengths.
In this paper, a 1.5 kW Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (IPMSG) with a power conditioner for the grid integration of a variable-speed wind turbine is developed. The power-conditioning system consists of a series-type 12-pulse diode rectifier powered by a phase shifting transformer and then cascaded to a PWM voltage source inverter. The PWM inverter is utilized to supply sinusoidal currents to the utility line by controlling the active and reactive current components in the q-d rotating reference frame. While the q-axis active current of the PWM inverter is regulated to follow an optimized active current reference so as to track the maximum power of the wind turbine. The d-axis reactive current can be adjusted to control the reactive power and voltage. In order to track the maximum power of the wind turbine, the optimal active current reference is determined by using a simple MPPT algorithm which requires only three sensors. Moreover, the phase angle of the utility voltage is detected using a simple electronic circuit consisting of both a zero-crossing voltage detecting circuit and a counter circuit employed with a crystal oscillator. At the generator terminals, a passive filter is designed not only to decrease the harmonic voltages and currents observed at the terminals of the IPMSG but also to improve the generator efficiency. The laboratory results indicate that the losses in the IPMSG can be effectively reduced by setting a passive filter at the generator terminals.

The experimental study of the behavior of dry medium and loose sandy soil under the action of a single impulsive load is carried out. Different falling masses from different heights were conducted using the falling weight deflectometer (FWD) to provide the single pulse energy. The responses of soils were evaluated at different locations (vertically below the impact plate and horizontally away from it). These responses include; displacements, velocities, and accelerations that are developed due to the impact acting at top and different depth ratios within the soil using the falling weight deflectometer (FWD) and accelerometers (ARH-500A Waterproof, and Low capacity Acceleration Transducer) that are embedded in the soil and then recorded using the multi-recorder TMR-200. The behavior of medium and loose sandy soil was evaluated with different parameters, these are; footing embedment, depth ratios (D/B), diameter of the impact plate (B), and the applied energy. It was found that increasing footing embedment depth results in: amplitude of the force-time history increases by about 10-30%. due to increase in the degree of confinement with the increasing in the embedment, the displacement response of the soil will decrease by about 25-35% for loose sand, 35-40% for medium sand due to increase in the overburden pressure when the embedment depth increased. For surface foundation, the foundation is free to oscillate in vertical, horizontal and rocking modes. But, when embedding a footing, the surrounding soil restricts oscillation due to confinement which leads to increasing the natural frequency, moreover, soil density increases with depth because of compaction, that is, tendency to behave as a solid medium.
A micromodel was applied to estimate the effects of geological conditions and injection methods on displacement of resident porewater by injecting scCO2 in the pore scale. Binary images from image analysis were used to distinguish scCO2-filled-pores from other pore structure. CO2 flooding followed by porewater displacement, fingering migration, preferential flow and bypassing were observed during scCO2 injection experiments. Effects of pressure, temperature, salinity, flow rate, and injection methods on storage efficiency in micromodels were represented and examined in terms of areal displacement efficiency. The measurements revealed that the areal displacement efficiency at equilibrium decreases as the salinity increases, whereas it increases as the pressure and temperature increases. It may result from that the overburden pressure and porewater salinity can affect the CO2 solubility in water and the hydrophilicity of silica surfaces, while the neighboring temperature has a significant effect on viscosity of scCO2. Increased flow rate could create more preferential flow paths and decrease the areal displacement efficiency. Compared to the continuous injection of scCO2, the pulse-type injection reduced the probability for occurrence of fingering, subsequently preferential flow paths, and recorded higher areal displacement efficiency. More detailed explanation may need further studies based on closer experimental observations.
In order to investigate the effect of tail state on the electrical and the optical properties in amorphous IGZO(a-IGZO), a-IGZO films were deposited at room temperature on fused silica substrats using pulsed laser deposition method. The laser pulse energy was used as the processing parameter. In-situ post annealing was carried out at $150^{\circ}C$ right after the film deposition. The $O_2$ partial pressure during the deposition and the post annealing was fixed to 10mTorr. The carrier mobility of the a-IGZO films had a range from 2 to $18\;cm^2/Vs$ at carrier concentrations greater than $10^{18}\;cm^{-3}$. As the laser energy density increased, the Hall mobility increased. And post annealing improved the Hall mobility, as well. The optical property was examined using the ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The a-IGZO films that have low Hall mobility exhibited stronger and broader absorption tails in >3.0 eV region. Post annealing reduced the intensity of the tail-like absorption. The absorption tail in a-IGZO films is an important factor which affects the electrical and the optical properties.

In this study, we evaluated the flow characteristics of various types of waveguide-below-cutoff (WBC) arrays and their shielding effectiveness (SE) of electromagnetic pulses (EMP) based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Three types of waveguides were selected for analysis: (1) grid type, (2) honeycomb type, and (3) multi-layer types (2-ply, 4-ply, 6-ply, and 8-ply). To analyze the air flow characteristics, the flow velocities in the longitudinal center of the WBC and the differential pressures between the WBC array inlet and outlet were evaluated. Consequently, we derive the following conclusions: (1) despite an increase in the inlet velocity, the pressure drop of the 6-ply multi-layer type did not significantly increase as compared to that of other types of waveguides (waveguide thickness of 0.1 mm, SE of 100 dB); (2) the grid and honeycomb type had the fastest flow rate of 17.5 m/s, which is approximately 2.5 m/s faster than that at the inlet (waveguide thickness of 1 mm, module size of 30 mm); and (3) the average pressure drop of the grid type waveguide is the lowest in the overall model, whereas that of the 8-ply is the highest (waveguide thickness of 1 mm, module size of 30 mm, and SE of 80, 100 dB).

There is considerable interest in developing energy sources capable of larger power densities. In our previous works, we proved that by coupling an exothermic chemical reaction with 1D nanostructures, a self-propagating reactive wave can be driven along its length with a concomitant electrical pulse of high specific power, which we identified as a thermopower wave. Herein, we discuss details about many different aspects of a thermopower wave. Different alignment degree in vertically aligned CNT films is evaluated in the reactive wave speed and correlated with its thermal reaction that affects the change in the magnitude of energy generation. The effects of the temperature-dependent properties of chemical fuels and CNTs are evaluated. Furthermore, we explore the convection and radiation portions in this thermal wave as well as the synchronization between the thermal reaction transfer and the oscillation of the electrical signal.
