  • Aucubin, an iridoid glucoside, which is isolated from Aucuba japonica, has some biological effects. This study was to investigate the effect of aucubin on the remainig pulp tissues after pulpotomy. Mongrel dog's coronal pulps were mechanically exposed with a sterile round bur and excised with sterile sharp excarvator. After bleeding was controlled, in control group, $Ca(OH)_2$ powder was applied on the remaining pulps and the cavities were sealed with Z.O.E. cement. In experimental group 1, mixed powder with $Ca(OH)_2$ and aucubin(l : 1 by weight) was applied on the pulpotomized pulp surfaces. After the cavities were covered with sterile aluminum foil, they were sealed with Z.O.E. cement. In experimental group 2, only aucubin powder was applied on the remaining pulps and then they were treated the same as experimental group 1. In the all groups, the pulps were histopathologically observed by light microscope at the time intervals of 1, 2 and 4 weeks after experiment. The results were as follows : 1. In control and experimental groups, mild vascular congestion and bleeding were found in most of the specimens. Less inflammatory infiltration was observed in experimental groups than in control group. 2. Dentin bridge formation was found after 1 week at both control and experimental group 1. Dentin birdge had discontinuous osteodentin like appearance or contained some dentin chips. In experimental group 2, dentin bridge was not seen. 3. The coagulation necrosis layer on the remaining pulp tissues was seen in all groups. In experimental group 2, the thickest layer was observed. And in control group, coagulation necrosis layer was similar as in experimental group 1.

  • TFormic acid-hydrogen peroxide (or performic acid) pulping process needs milder reaction condition than other chemical pulping process. Two-step formic acid-hydrogen peroxide pulping process can produce the chemical pulp with similar pulp yield and lignin content compared with soda-anthraquinone process. Formic acid-hydrogen peroxide pulp can be produced less xylan content than other alkaline pulps, which favor for dissolving pulp production. Formic acid-hydrogen peroxide pulp showed better response beating than soda-anthraquinone(AQ) pulps with reaching target freeness with less beating. Also, formic acid-hydrogen peroxide pulp had better tensile index at similar freeness level compared with soda-AQ pulps.

  • Polylactic acids polymer (PLA) was applied as an additive to improve the strength properties of handsheets prepared from three unbleached southern pine kraft pulps with different kappa number and an aspen bleached chemithermomechanical pulp (BCTMP). The results showed that PLA could greatly improve the tensile and burst strength of the pulp handsheets. Heat pressing effect was also important to enhance the strength properties. For unbleached kraft pulps, it was found that an appropriate amount of residual lignin in pulps had a positive effect on the handsheets strength improvement when adding PLA. The thickness of the handsheet did not change the PLA strengthening effect. In general, PLA effect on tear strength improvement could be neglected. However, it had a significant effect on the improvement of tear strength for the aspen BCTMP handsheets not containing sufficient amount of fines.

  • Enzymatic pulping properties of mixed office waste paper in standard disintegrator were investigated for successful enzymatic deinking of mixed office waste paper. Enzymatic pulping need more revolution in standard disintegrator than alkaline pulping and Cellusoft need more revolution than Denimax. The freeness of disintegrated pulp with enzyme was higher than those of disintegrated pulps with alkaline and heat killed enzyme. The freeness of disintegrated pulp with Denimax was higher than that of disintegrated pulp with Cellusoft. The freeness of disintegrated pulps were increased with a dosage of enzymes. The mechanical properties of disintegrated pulp were improved with enzyme addition comparing with heat killed enzyme. The tensile and burst index of hand sheet of disintegrated pulps with acidic Cellusoft were higher than that of others.

  • The purpose of this study was to decrease pollutants of effluents from KP bleaching. Multistage bleaching that combined with O, Eo, and C/D stage was conducted, after optimum bleaching conditions of O, Eo, and C/D stage were determined. Moreover the properties for bleached pulps and pollution level of bleaching effluent were measured by each standard method. Due to increase on the brightness and delignification of pulps by O, Eo, and C/D stage bleaching. It was possible that bleaching sequences were reduced from five stage to four stage. In addition to, OC/DEoD and OC/DEopD bleaching sequences had higher brightness than CEDED bleaching sequence. The pulps bleached by O and Eo stage had higher in tensile index than conventional bleaching sequences with the similar results in burst and tear index. While each bleaching sequences had little differences, bleaching sequences with Eo stage had higher in physical properties than with Eop stage. The pollution level measured by Chemical Oxygen Demand(COD), Biochemical Oxygen Demand(BOD) and Color of bleaching effluents were much lower in combined bleaching sequences of O, Eo and C/D stage than that of CEDED sequence. Particularly, a pollution index of bleaching effluents generated by C/DEoDEB and OC/DEopDED bleaching sequences were lower than that from the other bleaching sequences.

  • Pulps were separated from wood chips using an Electron beam irradiation (EBI) treatment without a NaOH-AQ (anthraquinone) treatment for cooking. The methods were based on a hot water treatment after EBI and two-step bleaching processes. Chemical compositions and FT-IR spectroscopy demonstrated that the content of lignin and hemicellulose in the bleached wood pulps treated with various EBI dose decreased with an increase of EBI doses. Specifically, the lignin in the bleached with pulps treated at 600 kGy of EBI dose was almost completely removed. Moreover, TGA analysis showed that a thermal stability increased with increasing the content of cellulose but the lignin decomposed slowly over the wide region.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the bio-stimulating effect of low power density laser radiation on the mechanically exposed pulp. Class V cavities on dog's teeth were prepared and the pulps were mechanically exposed with a round bur. In control group, the exposed pulps were capped with $Ca(OH)_2$ powder and the cavities were sealed with Z.O.E.. In experimental group A, the pulps were irradiated with GaA1As laser for 5 minutes and then they were treated the same as control group. In experimental group B, the exposed pulps were covered by aluminum foil and sealed with Z.O.E. after they were irradiated with the laser as the experimental group A. In the all groups, the pulps were histopathologically observed at the time intervals of 1, 2 and 3 week after experiment and the results were statistically evaluated. The results were as follows: 1) In control and experimental groups, mild vascular congestion and bleeding was found in most of the specimens and for the new formation of dentin bridge, experimental group A had the most cases. The dentin bridge had discontinuous osteodentin like appearance without any dentinal tubules. Inflammatory cell infiltration consisted of acute and chronic inflammatory cell, and the formation of microabscess was also observed. 2) The degree of inflammatory cell infiltration was not significantly different among control group and experimental groups at 1 week, 2 week and 3 week. 3) The formation of new dentin bridge was not significantly different between control group and experimental group A at 1 week, but at 2 week and 3 week, experimental group A showed significantly more cases of new dentin formation than control groups. (P < 0.05). 4) Between control group and experimental group B, there was no significant difference in formation of the new dentin bridge at 1, 2 and 3 week. (P> 0.05). 5) There was no significant difference in formation of the new dentin bridge at 1 and 2 week between experimental group A and experimental group B, but at 3 week, the former significantly had more cases of new dentin bridge formation than the latter.(P < 0.05).

  • Commercial micro pulps(Arbocel) were coated with three kinds of polymers using spray method. These coated micro pulps were used to papermaking additives to evaluate retention, drainage and physical properties of paper. The retention and drainage were improved with addition of polymer coated micro pulp. The bulk index of paper was also increased, but tensile and tear strength were decreased slightly, probably due to weakening of internal bonding. These results showed that the use of polymer coated micro pulp was an effective method to improve retention, drainage and bulk index of paper.

  • Effect of calendering on structural and surface properties of sheets made of various pulp was investigated. BKP, BCTMP and KOCC were used as raw materials for handsheets and sheets were calendered at the different calendering temperature and pressure conditions. Caliper, air permeability, and PPS roughness were reduced by calendering, but their effects were a little different depending on pulp type and calendering condition. Increase of density with increase of calendering Pressure was remarkable on sheet made of BCTMP or KOCC, and the effect of temperature was more significant than pressure. PPS roughness of sheet made of BCTMP or KOCC was reduced by calendering, but BKP sheet showed little reduction of roughness at higher calendering pressure. The compressibility of sheet increased logarithmetically with calendering pressure and surface compressibility of KOCC sheet was relatively higher than other pulps.

  • Currently, many forest residues have been generated by the National Forest Management Operation. Unfortunately, most of the forest residues are supposed to be used as raw materials for burning fuels like wood pellets. Even though the forest biomass must be effectively used for making high value-added products, they may be subject to disposable raw materials for wood pellets. Wood pellets are regarded as burning fuels with less contribution to the decrease in carbon gas emission, compared to raw materials for kraft pulps. In this study, we studied whether or not forest biomass mixed with various ages and, species could be used as raw materials for kraft pulps.
