  • Recently, the use of wood resources has been limited due to global environmental change, like global warming and desertification. It is very critical in Korea's paper industries because lots of virgin pulp are dependant on direct import from abroad for printing grade of paper. In this work, the alternatively best available technique for reducing the import amounts of BKP (bleached Kraft pulp) was considered by mixing DIP (deinked pulp) and TMP (thermomechanical pulp) for the manufacture of high quality paper. Generally known, the sheet prepared from fibrous raw materials of DIP and TMP has lower strength and optical properties than that prepared from BKP. This study was aimed to improve the sheet quality by using DIP and TMP. 4 kinds of polyelectrolytes were approached to find out the best effects on physical strength and optical brightness improvements, and high retention behaviors with GCC (ground calcium carbonate). In conclusion, amphoteric PAM with 1,000,000 molecular weight (g/mol) and 0.5 charge density (meq/g) was best for the improvement of strength properties with the mixture of DIP and TMP. GCC retention rate was also the highest with cationic-PAM of above 2,000,000 molecular weight (g/mol) and about 2.0-3.0 charge density (meq/g) of strengthening agent.

  • A white light interferometery (WLI) method for investigating surface microstructure was introduced. Brief description of the principle of this method was provided. The surface structure of various samples, for example, a liner board paper, a pigment coated paper, a intaglio printed paper and a polymer laminated paper were tested and characterized with the WLI method. The data showed the WLI method provided very detailed information about surface topography, which were little affected by the surface condition such as color, opacity, roughness, etc. The data stitching mode of the WLI method could provide high spatial resolution over a large field-of-view, which made it possible to obtain the statistically valid results. Fast and high repeatability also made this method a promising way for investigating the surface micro-structure of paper products and prints.

  • In this study, as a fuel filter for automobiles, base paper which can filtrate the polluted particles must satisfy with the standards of each vehicle. and a filter of impregnation paper made that combining the base paper with the resin. Therefore, They were wanted to found out the factors that affect base paper and impregnation paper according to content of HPZ, Mulberry pulp(MP), Laub holze bleached kraft pulp(LBKP). The most important things we wanted to find out in base paper and impregnation paper test were weight, thickness, air permeability, burst and tensile strength, maximum pore size and mean pore size, stiffness. we wanted to measure a rate of change of these condition by adjusting a rate of mixing for HPZ, MP and LBKP. Moreover, It suited for an impregnation paper mixed with a rate of mulberry pulp 20%, HPZ 40% and LBKP 40%. Used resins in this study was Phenol, Acryl, PVAc. And as every resins, sample was divided into existence and nothing of embossing. as a fuel filter for automobiles, It was appeared that the suitable condition of base paper was a rate of mixing for HPZ(40%), MP(20%) and LBKP(40%).

  • Three different species of cattails (Typha orientalis, Typha angustata, Typha latifolia) cultivated in South Korea were examined as raw materials for the production of pulp and paper. Soda pulping with anthraquinone was used for the stems and the leaves of cattail, separately. Addition of anthraquinone in soda pulping improved the yield greatly. Chemical components between three cattail species and within each species (leaves and stem) gave little differences. Average fiber length of the bleached cattail fibers was a little shorter than that of the HwBKP of Eucalyptus. Average fiber width of the cattail fibers was a half of that of the HwBKP. Compared to the HwBKP, cattail pulp gave higher breaking length, higher opacity, and better smoothness at equivalent freeness.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the characteristics of handsheets made from nonwoody New-Zealand hemp (Phormium tenax) fibers that was not used before in Korea. The results were as follows : 1. Physical properties of bleached phormium fiber were satisfactory for handsheet forming. Specially, tensile strength was improved by adding bleached phormium fiber. 2. Opacity of handsheet with phormium pulp was fine, therefore it can be useful fiber to improve opacity of light-weight printing paper. 3. Filler retention rate was improved when phormium pulp was added, while drainage time was increased. 4. Phormium fiber has good characteristics as pulp for paper manufacture. So it can be valuable non-wood fiber resource if drainage problem is solved.

  • Mechanical fibres are commonly characterized by measuring their length distribution and freeness. These parameters, however, do not adequately characterize the influence of refining on their mechanical properties. In this work we conducted multiple compression on fibre mats prepared from different length fractions (Bauer McNet fractions) to generate stress-strain curves from which several quality parameters can be derived such as modulus, stress and toughness. We found that these characteristics of fibre are strongly influenced by the refining energy used to produce pulp; fibres of similar length exhibit different mechanical properties depending on the refining energy6 consumption.

  • This study was aimed to decrease AOX(Adsorbed Organic Halide Compounds) by applying bleaching methods of A(HNO$_3$ + NaNO$_2$) and $D^{(H/L)}$(dual pH chlorine dioxide bleaching) to conventional OCEDED bleaching stages. And so we investigate the effects of NSA treatment and the influence of production rate of ion species in chlorine dioxide and pulp mixtures according to various pH as well as dual pH on pulp bleaching. Finally the effects of AOC_DED^{(H/L)}ED^{(H/L)}$ bleaching stage were investigated by measuring AOX, brightness, kappa number and viscosity of pulps. A stage was treated by using 4% $HNO_3$ and 0.05~2.0% $NaNO_2$ on pulp and $D^{(H/L)}$ stage was like that pulp mixed with chlorine dioxide solution was adjusted at pH 7.0 and reacted in pulp cosistency 3%, S~20min, $70^{\circ}C$, and then successively for 160~175min at pH 4.0. It was found that suitable $NaNO_2$ addition rate was at 0.6% where the brigtness of pulp was most higher and pulp viscosity was not decreased much. Chlorate ($CIO_3$) was decreased according to pH increase but chlorite($CIO_2$) was highly decreased according to pH increase. And chloride was slightly increased with pH increase. The applying of A and D^{(H/L)}$ bleaching stages to some various multiple bleaching stages ($AOC_DED^{(H/L)}/EopD^{(H/L)} etc.$) had good results that brightness was increased more 2~3% ISO than conventional method(OCEDEopD), but viscosity was dropped by only 1~2cps.
