  • In the planar flow casting(PFC) process, the conditions of the melt puddle between nozzle and rotating wheel affect significantly the quality and dimensional uniformity of the downstream ribbon. For stable puddle formation, the nozzle is placed very close to the quenching wheel, so the surface-tension and wall-adhesion forces have an important effect upon the fluid flow.\`In this study the planar flow casting process has been mode]ed using the VOF method for free surface tracking. The transient puddle formation from the present analysis shows good agreements with the previous experimental results. Furthermore, the variation of melt temperature and the corresponding cooling rate of the melt have been examined. The present results also show how the melt puddle can be farmed on the rotating substrate, how the melt flows within the puddle, and how the changes of the process variables affect the puddle formation and its corresponding fluid flow and heat transfer behavior.

  • This paper describes the effectiveness of laser pulse shaping in eliminating weld defects such as porosity, cracks and undercuts in pulsed Nd:YAG Laser welding. A large porosity was formed in a keyhole mode of deep penetration weld metal of any stainless steel. Solidification cracks were present in Type 303 with about 0.3%s. The conditions for the formation of porosity were determined in further detail in Type 316. With the objectives of obtaining a fundamental knowledge of formation and prevention of weld defects, the fusion and solidification behavior of a molten puddle was observed during laser spot welding of Type 310S. through high speed video photographing technique. It was deduced that cellular dendrite tips grew rapidly from the bottom to the surface, and consequently residual liquid remained at the grain boundaries in wide regions and enhanced the solidification cracking susceptibility. Several laser pulse shapes were investigated and optimum pulse shapes were proposed for the reduction and prevention of porosity and solidification cracking.

  • This paper describes the effectiveness of laser pulse shaping in eliminating weld defects such as porosity, cracks and undercuts in pulsed Nd:YAG laser welding. A large porosity was formed in a keyhole mode of deeply penetrated weld metal of any stainless steel. Solidification cracks were present in STS 310S with above 0.017%P and undercuts were formed in STS 303 with about 0.3%S. The conditions for the formation of porosity were determined in further detail in STS 316. With the objectives of obtaining a fundamental knowledge of formation and prevention of weld defects, the fusion and solidification behavior of a molten puddle was observed during laser spot welding of STS 310S through a high speed video photographing technique. It was deduced that cellular dendrite tips grew rapidly from the bottom to the surface, and consequently residual liquid remained at the grain boundaries in wide regions and enhanced the solidification cracking susceptibility. • Effects of the nitrogen application time and amounts on the nitroger. uptake and recovery of fertilizer nitrogen applied at panicle formation stage was investigated in connection with the growth and yield of rice drill-seeded in puddle-soil. silt loam of Jeonbuk series. Urea was applied as nitrogen source. Nitrogen uptake and recovery of fertilizer nitrogen by rice plant was highest in the treatment applied nitrogen at 20 days before heading. Culm length, internode length (4th and 5th) and lodging index were increased by earlier application time and higher level of nitrogen. but filled grain ratio and 1,000 grain weight showed the opposite trend Panicle number per square meter and grain number per panicle was significantly decreased in nitrogen application at 10 days before heading. Rice yield was the highest in 33kgN/ha(conventional amount at 20days before heading, and yield in 26kgN/ha(80% of conventional amount) at 20 days before heading and in 33kg/ha at 15days before heading were nearly the same as conventional treatment.
