  • This paper empirically investigates potential factors that might affect firms' incentives to license out technology. The analysis is done with the help of a panel data set of observed licensing transactions involving U.S. public companies in high-technology industries. The important explanatory factors relate to the firm characteristics such as the company's stock of technological knowledge (patent stock). prior involvement in technology licensing. the company size, R&D intensity and capital expenditure. The results suggest that there seems to be significant inter-sectoral differences as well as similarities in determinants of the propensity to transfer technology through licensing agreements.

  • Underground space, especially very-deep tunnel development in urban area, is a good alternative to solve the problem of insufficient ground space, and the need for underground space development is steadily increasing. However, due to the complex and time-consuming nature of design and construction, public conflicts related to the deep tunnel project are getting aggravating and more complex. In addition, since the public budget is mainly invested, when civil complaints arise, they often respond passively, resulting in amplification of conflicts or prolonging the deadlock in many cases. In this study, by analyzing the progress of major conflicts related to the construction of very-deep tunnels in urban area, the causes of conflicts, factors prolonging conflicts, and solutions are reviewed. Through a survey targeting ordinary citizens and tunnel experts, thoughts about the deep tunnel construction and major conflict factors were analyzed, and suggestions for minimizing conflicts were presented. The results of this study can be used to prepare alternatives such as various public involvement measures and improvement of project procedures to form a civic consensus on the construction of very-deep tunnels, and to prepare measures to improve prejudice against very-deep tunnels.

  • Despite the continuous development and provisions of state public library standards there has been little research about how useful they are for what aspects of public library activities The purposes of the present study are 1) to understand, from the directors points of view the utility of state standards for planning and evaluation: and 2) to explore the types of factors, related to the directors' backgrounds and/or the library planning and evaluation contexts associated with the directors perceptions. Through a self-administered mail questionnaire, 1,198 public library directors in Kansas Texas and Wisconsin were surveyed. and 737 directors replied ($61.5\%$ response rate). The directors perceived the standards useful for both planning and evaluation. Public library directors viewed the collection and service standards as more useful than administration, staffing and facilities standards. Library size and community involvement were associated with the directors perceptions, yet the directors professional background, was not significantly related to his or her perceptions. The findings suggest that public library directors perceptions of the utility of state standards need to be understood within the library condition and Its community context. and the emphasis on community based public library planning and evaluation should continue to be employed in the standards.

  • In Bangkok, dental clinics are ubiquitous with high competition in many areas. It was quite difficult for new entries to survive in the market. However, there was an interesting dental clinic that opened in the Asoke area and has more than 4,000 patients within 2 years of opening. The number of employees in this dental clinic was only 20. The purpose of the study was to investigating the corporate culture of this dental clinic and how the corporate culture impacted the company performance. The result of this study showed that this dental clinic had "involvement type" corporate culture. This is another example of a case study about corporate culture and corporate characteristics that motivate employees and ultimately helped organizations maximize their performance. The case study might motivate entrepreneurs to set up the proper corporate culture and help the company to be more sustainable.

Method: The subjects of this study consisted of 251 mid-aged adults who lived in D city and N city. The instrument for this study was exercise performance scale by Kim and QOL scale by Ro. Data were collected form February 20 to March 20. 2003. Result: 1. Among participants. 'good' exercise performance consisted $39.2\%$ and exercise involvement was $41\%$. 2. The quality of life showed positive significant correlation with the exercise performance(r=.21. p=.00). 3. Exercise performance was a predictor of quality of life and $8.3\%$ of the variance explained with exercise performance. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that further development and applying of exercise performance programs are recommended for quality of life of mid-aged adults. In addition. further research needs to be done to identify relationship with these factors for various age group.

  • Infrastructures in Japan constructed mostly in high economic growth period become elder & elder, and the troubles & accidents caused by the aging increase. Though investment for the renewal is necessary, the shortage of public fund delays the action. Besides, we expect the decrease of the population that means the decrease of the engineers who take care of social infrastructures. Thus, it is necessary for us to develop Advanced Management system of social Infrastructures (AMI) to realize the efficient and economical operation. Our concept of AMI consists of using ICT, PI (Public Involvement) and establishment of O&M diagnosis system. We expect AMI will support to realize the appropriate repairing, preventive maintenance based on the actual performance, accidents & dangerous experience and education & training of the workers. In this paper, development of AMI for the waste disposal facility as a first example of infrastructures will be shown.

  • Following the ratification of Vienna Convention for Ozone Layer Protection and Montreal Protocol, Indonesia will implement the phasing-out of to halon at end 1996. Questions are increasing especially from the users where halon has used for many years as the most effective fire extinguishing agent, concerning halon substitutes, alternative systems as well as the handling and utilization of the existing halon. Halon can still be used for critical and essential uses, however, such usage has been gradually eliminated, due to the emergence of halon-like replacement. A concept of halon banking system is proposed to considered, taking into account several aspects such as enforced regulation, institutional involvement technology as well as financing. This paper gives a general overview regarding phase-out implementation, alternative extinguishing systems and concept on halon banking system with special reference to Indonesian case.

  • Background: Globally, cervical cancer is a major public health concern. Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women, resulting in approximately 500,000 cases per year. The purpose of this study is to compare disease characteristics between Black Hispanic (BH) and Black non-Hispanic (BNH) women in the US. Materials and Methods: We used stratified random sampling to select cervical cancer patient records from the SEER database (1973-2009). We used Chi-square and independent samples t-test to examine differences in proportions and means. Results: The sample included 2,000 cervical cancer cases of Black non-Hispanic and 91 Black Hispanic women. There were statistically significant differences between black Hispanic and black non- Hispanics in mean age at diagnosis (p<0.001), mean survival time (p<0.001), marital status (p<0.001), primary site of cancer (p<0.001); lymph node involvement (p<0.001); grading and differentiation (p<0.0001); and tumor behavior (p<0.001). Black women were more likely to develop cervical cancer and to have the highest mortality rates from the disease. Conclusions: Findings from this study show clear racial and ethnic disparities in cervical cancer incidence and prognosis that should be addressed.
