  • This study analyzed the contents of KOSS-SF and PWI-SF by using ICF-VR core set and IPC framework for value judgment. The two instruments are self-report questionnaires commonly used for presenteeism in order to suggest vocational rehabilitation factors to predict presenteeism. The study was conducted from Dec 2018 to Feb 2019. For the analysis, the researchers independently linked the scales using the connection rules of ICF and IPC framework. The average agreement between the researchers was 90%. KOSS-SF was linked with 60 ICF-VR codes and PWI-SF with 34 ICF-VR codes, and mainly measured activities and participation, and body function domains. According to the IPC framework, the instruments were found to measure the Rational-Social, and Emotional-Psychological aspects. As a result, the two instruments did not adequately reflect the presenteeism (30% matched) and were particularly limited in ICF-VR environmental domains. Based on the results, questions of ICF body structure, environmental, and personal domains should be added to improve the validity of the presenteeism scale, and references and guidelines should be developed for collecting clearer data. Further study and discussion were provided.

  • This study aimed to identify the effects of adolescents' self-perceived health on their life satisfaction and verify the mediating effects of the relationship between the two factors. The analysis was conducted using the Korean Children and Youth Panel Study (KCYPS, Ed. 6), and the results are as follows. In terms of the factors, the mean value of the adolescents' self-perceived health was 3.13, which was regarded as a moderate level, while the values of life satisfaction and self-esteem were 2.80 and 2.90, respectively, which were regarded as low levels. An analysis of the study model showed that the adolescents' self-perceived health affected their life satisfaction, and self-esteem played a meditating role in such a relationship. In other words, a higher level of self-perceived health would help improve self-esteem, which would promote a level of life-satisfaction. Therefore, this study has implications that healthcare or psychological/ emotional resources have been identified to influence adolescents' life satisfaction. Furthermore, multidimensional interventions are needed to reinforce the individuals' psychological and develop emotional resources in healthcare or welfare fields. Moreover, efforts are needed to enhance the adolescents' self-perceived health that would affect their life satisfaction.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the mechanism through which youth school-based mentoring program impacts mentees' psychological and school-related outcomes such as self-esteem, self-efficacy, and attitudes toward school. The hypothetical model was assumed that mentors could improve their mentees' developmental outcomes through positive relationships with mentors as good role models and enhancement of help-seeking orientation. To investigate the mediating effect of process-related outcomes, structural equation modeling was used. The 97 adolescents were recruited through referral and random selection from middle schools in Seoul. The result showed that the effects of program participation were mediated by proximal changes in connectedness to role models and development of help-seeking orientation that, in turn, led to facilitate more positive attitudes toward school and academic activity, and improve psychological outcomes. Practice and policy implications as well as further research topics were discussed to aid the search for highly effective mentoring programs.

  • Children in one-parent families have difficulties from negative perception and prejudice in society in spite of increasing divorce rate and the substantial number of one-parent families. This research aims to provide basic setting-up materials of the equal educational environment to children in one-parent families by examining teachers' perception and attitudes towards those children, and also analysing which factors are associated with the teachers' perceptions and attitudes. In particular, by exploring teachers' internalized value system and stereotyped conception are closely related to the process of evaluating children's personality and behavior, this research suggests that social consciousness to one-parent families should be changed and improved in terms of equality. According to the research result, most teachers notice that children in one-parent families are increasing by number at schools, however, they do not seem to understand properly children's situations including psychological condition. Teachers' negative perception of children in one-parent families are not only influenced by teachers' socio-demographic characteristics, experience factors and children's school life, but also by teachers' own personal value of familism and divorce. Such teachers' attitudes towards one-parent family children are easily predicted to influence children's confidentiality and self-respect. Therefore, it is proposed that the change of social consciousness on one-parent families, the change of educational system and educational environment, development of educational training program for teachers, allocation of school social worker or school counsellor, and empowerment of one-parent family are necessary in order children in one-parent families to have more equitable opportunities at school.

  • This study examines the digital divide, one of the main issues in digital media environment, in relation with the digital literacy on the perspective of audience welfare. The study explores the current state of audience welfare policy with regard to the issue of digital divide which can be seen as the dark side of this flourishing digital technology society. The barriers and enablers of the digital divide are discussed with the question of how these factors are related with the digital literacy competence of audience. It has been criticized that both the research efforts and the policy implementations on the digital divide had been set within the limitation of physical access to the digital equipment and technology. Recent studies suggested that the digital divide should be viewed in dynamic interaction of a variety of factors such as psychological dispositions, inner attitudes toward digital media, competence and ability of audiences as well as socio-economic status of individuals. Despite the recent inclusive discussion, however, the role of digital literacy in the digital divide remains unexplored. It should be noted that the question of access is not just to do with equipment, but with skills and knowledge that are required to use equipment. This notion suggests an important implication for the digital divide policy establishment. This study proposes a two-stage solution for reducing the digital divide, in which the first stage focuses on physical access and technology education and the second stage on the digital literacy education.

  • Using data collected from Korean mothers (N=429) with preschool children (aged 3 to 5 years) in 12 day care centers in Seoul, this study aims to empirically demonstrate the different pathways acute and chronic stress affect parenting efficacy of mothers according to the income group to which they belong. Analytic results show mothers in the low-income group show higher levels of depressive symptoms than mothers in the middle-income group, and the former also show more frequent and higher levels of acute and chronic stress than the latter. The mediation model results show that acute stress and chronic stress did not directly affect parenting efficacy, but rather indirectly affect parenting efficacy through maternal depressive symptoms. Acute stress and chronic stress are both significant factors affecting depressive symptoms with chronic stress exerting greater influence. When the total effect was analyzed, chronic stress has a greater effect on parenting efficacy than acute stress. The effect of chronic stress on maternal depressive symptoms is greater on low-income mothers than middle-income mothers, while the effect of acute stress on maternal depressive symptoms and the effect of those symptoms on parenting efficacy are greater on middle class families than low-income families. In order to maximize effective parenting in high-risk situations, the psychological welfare of mothers needs to be protected from the environmental difficulties they face. Based on the results, policies to support women and parents at the national and social levels are discussed.

  • This study is to discusses the relevance of social welfare in Freud's psychoanalytic theory. The results of the study are as follows. First, psychoanalytic theory details the client's family history and personal history to help them identify the characteristics of the problem they have today. At this time, social workers actively listen to clients and try to get various information.Second, when used in psychoanalytic techniques, the resistance of the client can be interpreted and analyzed to help the client maintain friendly relationships with the client.Third, psychoanalytic theory can properly apply the client's current state of mind by understanding the potential conflicts or emotions that exist in the client's unconscious mind. Fourth, during the process of intervention, social workers need to deal well with the client's transition response. This process allows social workers to observe the effect of reducing the stimuli that can cause nervousness in clients. In conclusion, all the techniques of interpretation used in psychoanalytic theory are, after all, techniques that help social workers improve clients' insight into their problems and help clients solve their psychological problems themselves. The psychoanalytic theory is widely applied in social welfare.

  • This study aims to categorize the daily time use of older adults into different types, examine the factors influencing them and the differences between them by type, and verify the effect of each type on life satisfaction. From the 6th wave of the Korea Retirement and Income Study (KeRIS), analysis was conducted on 3,963 older adults aged 65 (n=3,963). Using Latent Profile Analysis (LPA), three types of daily time use for older adults were identified: basic life maintenance type (16%), free-leisure oriented type (26%), and social activity type (58%). From the results of multinomial logistic regression analysis to identify the factors influencing each type of daily time use, it was found that the main factors influencing free-leisure oriented type, when compared with basic life maintenance type, were the presence of spouse (p<.01) and psychological health status (p<.001). The main factors influencing social activity type, when compared with basic life maintenance type, were age (p<.05), economic activity (p<.001), and chronic disease (p<.001). The life satisfaction seen during free-leisure oriented time and social activity time was higher than that during basic life maintenance time. From these findings, practical and policy proposals were suggested to improve life satisfaction of older adults during basic life maintenance time by pursuing changes in the use of that time.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of climacteric women's attitude to developmental phenomena and their menopausal symptoms on their meaning of life in an attempt to provide some information on the improvement of climacteric women's quality of life. The subjects in this study were 313 women who resided in different regions involving a large city D and another city C. They were aged between 40 and 60 and were going through their menopause. They were aged between 40 and 60 and were going through their menopause. The subjects were selected by convenient sampling, which was one of nonprobability sampling methods. The collected data were analyzed by the statistical package SPSS. The major findings of the study were as follows: First, the climacteric women didn't take a positive attitude toward developmental phenomena. They occasionally suffered severe menopausal symptoms, and they didn't find a great meaning in their life. Second, the climacteric women found a more meaning in their life when they took a more positive attitude to developmental phenomena, and those who underwent severer menopausal symptoms found a less meaning in their life. Third, the climacteric women's meaning of life was under the influence of their attitude toward developmental phenomena and menopausal symptoms. Specifically, their attitude to menopause and mental symptoms had a large impact on that. Given the findings of the study, social welfare intervention should be provided for climacteric women to promote their physical health related to menopausal symptoms and psychological health related to attitude toward developmental phenomena to find a more meaning in their life. Besides, local welfare centers should be open to climacteric women as one of governmental policies so that they could lead a healthy life. Education should be provided for them to be ready for their own menopause, and social welfare counseling service should be offered from diverse angles

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the demographic, economic, and psychological factors that influence the quality of life (QoL) of the elderly. The data in the 'Survey on the Elderly in 2011', were collected from The Ministry of Health & Welfare and the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs. The samples included 3,312 out of the total of 15,146 elderly people aged from 65 to 70 years. Multiple regression analysis and path analysis were used to analyze the research model. The findings are as follows. First, the most critical factor that affected the QoL of the elderly was "subjective standard of living" with other factors including "subjective physical condition level", "depression", "total annual income", "the number of chronic disease", "self-esteem", "economic supports from their adult children", "education level", "living with their adult children or not", "sex", and "home ownership", in that order. Second, based on the path analysis results, the QoL of the elderly was influenced by "subjective physical condition level", "subjective standard of living", "depression", "self-esteem", "total annual income", "education level", and "the number of chronic disease", in that order. In particular, "depression" had a negative direct effect and an indirect effect on the QoL of the elderly, whereas "self-esteem" had a positive direct effect and indirect effect on their QoL. Third, "labor force participation status" did not affect the QoL of the elderly. However, it implied the mediating effect of "self-esteem" and "depression" on their QoL. These results show that demographic, economic, and psychological factors heavily influence the QoL of the elderly. Specifically, "depression" and "self-esteem" turn out to be mediating variables that strongly influence the QoL of the elderly. Also, "labor force participation status" does not have a positive direct effect on the QoL of the elderly but has a positive mediating effect of "depression" and "self-esteem" on their QoL.
