  • Objectives: A content analysis was conducted to examine whether the current school textbooks providing smoking information are effective or not. Methods: The authors reviewed 111 qualified textbooks using elementary through high schools during 2006-2007 academic year in Korea. Educational components were coded with an analysis tool developed through the present research. Result: Tobacco education components were narrowly focused on long-term physiological consequences of tobacco use, addictiveness, and harmful ingredients and they were repetitively shown in the textbooks. Negative health consequences such as lung cancer were emphasized 10 times among 12 smoking-related textbooks. Educational messages or contents are mainly based on medical knowledge (72%) rather than psycho-social components. The US school-based smoking prevention programs, however, employ psycho-social approach with cognitive and life-skill components and they contain only 7-17% of smoking-related medical knowledge. In order to increase psycho-social smoking prevention components in Korean textbooks, the present study identified social subjects of textbooks (and relating core sessions) for elementary, middle, and high school. It also provided guidelines for school instructors to use. Conclusion: Adolescent smoking behavior is not caused by the deficit of health information, but mostly by social influences including media and peer pressure. School textbooks proving smoking information need to increase psycho-social context. One of the most effective ways as a psycho-social smoking prevention program is to use social subjects (or curriculum) of textbooks such as social studies, ethics, social cultures, social environment, and home management.

(2) The college students of the family with negative parent-adolescent communication and high parents' marital conflict were more negative in psycho-social adjustment than those of the family with positive parent-adolescent communication or low parents' marital conflict. A convenience sample of this study was collected for three weeks in December 2012 among older adults via paper survey. Hierarchical multiple regression was utilized to analyze collected data. The present study demonstrated that age, years of education, perception of health status, and perception of economic status were significantly associated with perception of successful aging. However, years of education and perception of economic status were no longer significantly associated with perception of psycho-social aging, when leisure needs was included. Age, perception of health status, and hobbies/entertainment activities and employment/plan of later years activities among types of leisure needs were significantly associated with perception of psycho-social aging. This finding demonstrates that leisure needs influence perception of psycho-social aging. Implications and suggestions to improve perception of psycho-social aging among older adults are discussed.

  • This study followed the standardization study pool of K-BSID-II to examine the stability of K-BSID-II. One hundred and ninety five infants aged from 1-42 months tested twice with intervals of 5-16 month between tests. All participants had been full-term babies without any medical complications. There were no significant differences between the groups which were divided in terms of demographic variables such as mothers' education, infants' birth order and gender. The stability of K-BSID-II was significant and that of the mental scale was lower than that of the psycho-motor scale: There were high stabilities between raw scores in two sessions(r=.91 for the mental scale and r=.89 for the psycho-motor scale) but there were significant but low correlations between mental index scores(r=.18, p<.05) and psycho-motor index scores(r=.17, p<.05). The stability was increased with initial test age and mothers' education. It was recommended for testers and researchers to use both raw scores and index scores for better interpretations in future research.
