  • The solutions of neighboring optimal control are typically obtained using the sweep method or transition matrices. Due to the numerical integration, however, the gain matrix can become infinite as time go to final one in the transition matrices, and the Riccati solution can become infinite when the final time free. To overcome these disadvantages, this paper proposes the pseudospectral Legendre method which is to first discreteize the linear boundary value problem using the global orthogonal polynomial, then transforms into an algebraic equations. Because this method is not necessary to take any integration of transition matrix or Riccati equation, it can be usefully used in real-time operation. Finally, its performance is verified by the numerical example for the space vehicle's orbit transfer.

  • An eigenvalue analysis of the circular Mindlin plates with free boundary conditions is presented. The analysis is based on the Chebyshev-Fourier pseudospectral method. Even though the eigenvalues of lower vibration modes tend to convergence more slowly than those of higher vibration modes, the eigenvalues converge for sufficiently fine pseudospectral grid resolutions. The eigenvalues of the axisymmetric modes are computed separately. Numerical results are provided for different grid resolutions and for different thickness-to-radius ratios.

  • A study of fee vibration of circular Mindlin plates is presented. The analysis is based on the pseudospctral method, which uses Chebyshev polynomials and Fourier series as basis functions. It Is demonstrated that rapid convergence and accuracy as well as the conceptual simplicity could be achieved when the pseudospectral method was apt)lied to the solution of eigenvalue problems. Numerical examples of circular Mindlin plates with clamped and simply supported boundary conditions are provided for various thickness-to-radius ratios.

  • The two-dimensional incompressible flow of a linear viscoelastic fluid we considered in this research has rapidly oscillating initial conditions which contain both the large scale and small scale information. In order to grasp this double-scale phenomenon of the complex flow, a multiscale analysis method is developed based on the mathematical homogenization theory. For the incompressible flow of a linear viscoelastic Maxwell fluid, a well-posed multiscale system, including averaged equations and cell problems, is derived by employing the appropriate multiple scale asymptotic expansions to approximate the velocity, pressure and stress fields. And then, this multiscale system is solved numerically using the pseudospectral algorithm based on a time-splitting semi-implicit influence matrix method. The comparisons between the multiscale solutions and the direct numerical simulations demonstrate that the multiscale model not only captures large scale features accurately, but also reflects kinetic interactions between the large and small scale of the incompressible flow of a linear viscoelastic fluid.

  • Atmospheric Re-Entry guidance is divided as longitudinal and lateral. This paper proposes a longitudinal reference trajectory and control law using the inverse dynamics method with pseudospectral Legendre method. Application of this method into Re-Entry problem forces a power of calculation time-reduction due to unnecessary of integration or any iteration as well as sufficient accuracy convergence. The used guidance scheme is time-to-go.

  • Theoretically, spectral method has the highest accuracy among present numerical methods, but it is generally difficult to apply to complex terrains because of complex boundary conditions. Recently, spectral-element method, basically divide the domain into a set of rectangular subdomain and solve the equation at each subdomain, has been introduced. However, boundary conditions become more complex and requires more computing time, thus spectral-element method is not powerful for all complex terrain problems. In this paper, potential flow theory was intorduced to solve the air flows and diffusion phenomenon in the presence of terrain obstacles. Using the velocity potential-stream line orthogonal coordinate space, the diffusion problems of hilly terrain by pseudospectral method were solved and compared those with no terrain real scale solutions.

  • Pseudospectral Hartree-Fock(PSHF) gradient calculations with $6-31G^{**}$ basis set have been carried out to determine the structure of D-Asparagine molecule $(C_4N_2O_3H_8)$ with improved grids and with the BFGS method. The modified PSHF method, despite partial optimization of the gradient code, turned out to be still faster than the conventional ab initio method, GAUSSIAN 90 program by more than twice. The optimum geometry of D-Asparagine obtained by the PSHF method is in good agreement with those calculated by the GAUSSIAN 90 program (within 0.0036 ${\AA}$ for bond lengths, 0.8 degrees for bond angles, and 1.6 degrees for torsional angles) except for three torsional angles. Here, rather large discrepancy of these three torsional angles (5-6 degrees) is attributed to the small differences in the optimum bond lengths and angles between the PSHF and GAUSSIAN 90 calculations.

  • This article investigates various transcription techniques for the Legendre pseudospectral (PS) method to compare the pros and cons of each approach. Eight combinations from four different types of collocation points and two discretization methods for dynamic constraints, which differentiate Legendre PS transcription techniques, are implemented to solve a carefully selected test set of nonlinear optimal control problems (NOCPs). The convergence property and prediction accuracy are compared to provide a useful guideline for selecting the best combination. The tested NOCPs consist of the minimum time, minimum energy, and problems with state and control constraints. Therefore, the results drawn from this comparative study apply to the solution of similar types of NOCPs and can mitigate much debate about the best combinations. Additionally, important findings from this study can be used to improve the numerical efficiency of the Legendre PS methods. Three PS applications to the aerospace engineering problems are demonstrated to prove this point.

  • This paper addresses minimum-fuel, two-dimensional trajectory optimization for a soft lunar landing from a parking orbit to a desired landing site. The landing site is usually not considered when performing trajectory optimization so that the landing problem can be handled. However, for precise trajectories for landing at a desired site to be designed, the landing site has to be considered as the terminal constraint. To convert the trajectory optimization problem into a parameter optimization problem, a pseudospectral method was used, and C code for feasible sequential quadratic programming was used as a numerical solver. To check the reliability of the results obtained, a feasibility check was performed.
