  • This study was conducted to optimize the amount of drip irrigation for Prunus×yedoensis Matsum., one of the major medium-sized landscaping trees used mainly for streetscapes and as ornamentals. The experiment was conducted in a container nursery, where we assessed the growth and physiological characteristics of 4- and 8-year-old seedlings watered at different rates (x) by a drip irrigation system. The relative growth rates (based on height and root collar diameter (RCD) measurements) were highest at 288 and 416 L/year/tree for the 4- and 8-year-old containerized seedlings, respectively. These age and treatment combinations also produced significantly different dry weight and seedling quality index values, indicating good growth. The two age groups had significantly different total root lengths, root diameters, and root volumes under these respective irrigation treatments. In addition, the 4-year-old containerized seedlings irrigated at 288 L/year/tree and the 8-year-old containerized seedlings irrigated at 416 L/year/tree had the highest activations in their chlorophyll contents. Overall, the results (differences in irrigation amounts affect the seedlings morphological relative growth, biomass growth, seedling quality, and physiological reaction) indicate that the optimal irrigation amounts for container-grown Prunus×yedoensis are 288 L/year/tree for 4-year-old (RCD class, 3cm) and 416 L/year/tree for 8-year-old (RCD class, 7 cm) containerized seedlings.

  • Multiple shoots were induced from in vitro shoot originated from winter bud of P. yedoensis from Jeju. Most explants grow in similar type among the five different media but affected by supplement of sucrose regardless of media. For mass-propagation various concentrations of BAP or $GA_3$ were treated in the medium respectively. BAP was very effective to produce multiple shoots and 3.5~9.5 shoots were formed on the explant. The shoots induced on the high levels of BAP have short internodes. No shoots were induced on the treatment of $GA_3$ but roots were induced on it. When $GA_3$ was supplemented with the medium containing BAP, multiple shoots were produced from the explants. The medium(WPM) containing with $0.5mg/{\ell}$ BAP and $4.0mg/{\ell}$ $GA_3$ was most effective to produce multiple shoots. When the explants were cultured for 8 weeks, 39.5 shoots were developed in average.

  • This study identifies the basic personality types of subjects who use the healing garden and investigates their plants-preference. The purpose of the study is to provide a basic information about planting plan, considered as a main parts of healing garden. Survey results are stated as follows: First, the order of preference of instinct type tree is Prunus yedoensis, zelkova serrata, Phyllostachys Bambusoides. On the other hands, the order of preference of feeling and thinking type is Prunus yedoensis, zelkova serrata, Metasequoia glyptostroboides. Second, the order of preference of instinct type of flowers is Rosa hybrida, Hibiscus syriacus, Forsythia koreana. However, the preference of emotional type is the order of Rosa hybrida, cosmos bipinnatus, Helianthus annuus and the preference of accident type is the order of Rosa hybrida, Hibiscus syriacus, Helianthus annuus. Third, for the color preferences, instinct type prefer yellow color, feeling type and thinking type prefer red color. Lastly, when people view plants, most personality types are interested in flower firstly, and secondly type of tree and scent. In other words, we can assume that people are interested in the flowers, most noticeable in plants. This study will enhance the effectiveness of the healing garden by providing relevant information regarding healing garden planting plan. Future research should consider to widen the range of target of investigation in order to perform additional comparison analysis.

  • This study was conducted to examine the effectiveness of various dressing materials applied to tree wounds in Korea. Significantly higher wound closure rates than those of controls were found when thiophanatemethyl paste (Topsin Paste$^{(R)}$) was applied to Ginkgo biloba, Zelkova serrata, and Prunus yedoensis; lanolin to Z. serrata and P. yedoensis; and tebuconazole paste (Silvacur$^{(R)}$) to P. yedoensis. However, significantly lower wound closure rates than those of controls were found when petroleum jelly (Vaseline$^{(R)}$) was applied to G. biloba, Z. serrata, and P. yedoensis. It was noted that the wounds of Z. serrata and P. yedoensis treated with petroleum jelly expanded due to the death of cambium located at the edge of the wounds. Wound closure rates applied with adhesive - non-toxic to human body (Okong bond$^{(R)}$) were also significantly lower than those of controls in Z. serrata. Pinus densiflora showed no reaction to any experimental wound dressing because of resin secreted from the exposed cambium.

  • Prunus subg. Cerasus is the most planted street and landscaping tree in South Korea, but it is difficult to identify species according to their macro-morphologies, leading to problems when attempting properly to manage species quantities. The purpose of this study is to understand the current status of plant types and species compositions in Bundang Central Park in Bundang-gu of Seongnam City and to discuss the necessity of the management of landscaping tree planting. In April of 2021, during the cherry blossom season, a total of 5,866 planted cherry trees were investigated within an area of 6 km2 of Bundang-gu in Seongnam City. As a result, 5,744 trees were sorted into eleven taxa, but the remaining 122 trees were not determined due to their complex morphologies. Prunus ×yedoensis Matsum. accounted for the highest proportion (52.1%), followed by P. serrulata Lindl. var. pubescens Nakai and P. jamasakura Siebold ex Koidz. P. ×nudiflora (Koehne) Koidz., a plant native to Jejudo Island, was not found in this survey. In order to help identify cherry trees based on micro-morphologies, an identification key was presented for the eleven taxa planted as major landscaping trees. It is known that cherry trees frequently form interspecific hybrids in nature. In order to prevent a loss of the genetic originality of native species due to hybridization and gene introgression from foreign cherry trees, it is necessary to manage planting species near the habitats of native taxa and track their origins.
