  • Multimedia computing has attracted considerable attention with the rapid growth in the development and application of multimedia technology. Current studies have attempted to support the increasing resource consumption and computational overhead caused by multimedia computing. In this paper, we propose $MediaCloud$, a new multimedia computing paradigm that integrates the concept of cloud computing in handling multimedia applications and services effectively and efficiently. $MediaCloud$ faces the following key challenges: heterogeneity, scalability, and multimedia Quality of Service (QoS) provisioning. To address the challenges above, first, a layered architecture of $MediaCloud$, which can provide scalable multimedia services, is presented. Then, $MediaCloud$ technologies by which users can access multimedia services from different terminals anytime and anywhere with QoS provisioning are introduced. Finally, $MediaCloud$ implementation and applications are presented, and media retrieval and delivery are adopted as case studies to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed $MediaCloud$ design.

  • The differentiated service architecture is based on a simple model by applying a per-class service in the core node of the network. However, due to the simplified network behavior, the network structure and provisioning were more complicated. If a service provider wants the dynamic provisioning or better bandwidth guarantee, signaling protocol with QoS parameters or admission control method should be deployed in DiffServ network. However, these methods increase the complexity. Therefore, we proposed DPM2 mechanism for admission control in the DiffServ network. In this paper, we describe and survey the admission control methods that are applicable to IP networks and propose also the dynamic provisioning mechanism based on the bandwidth broker and distributed measurement based admission control and movable boundary bandwidth management to support heterogeneous QoS services in differentiated service networks. For the performance evaluation for proposed mechanism, we used ns-2 simulator.

  • Since users want to have services correctly in their own position and surrounding circumstance in ubiquitous computing environment, it is very important to search, compose basic services and provide suitable services according to various circumstances. However existing techniques have been studied on service discovery mainly and lack consideration for position or preference of users. Furthermore, on service composition, they lists basic services simply and do not propose concretely method of use service history data for service composition. Therefore we propose a framework for context-based service provisioning middleware system, called COSEP, and Ontology engine with data ming. This research discovers services by reacting dynamically to circumstance information such as time and position of user, composites services using Ontology engine with data ming and offers newly created optimal services to users.

  • In connection-oriented data transport services, data loss can occur when a service experiences a problem in its end-to-end path. To resolve the problem promptly, the data transport systems providing the service must quickly modify their internal configurations, which are distributed among different locations within each system. The configurations are modified through a series of problem (event) handling procedures, which are carried out by multiple control processors in the system. This paper proposes a provisioning-to-signaling method for inter-control-processor messaging to improve the time efficiency of event processing. This method simplifies the sharing of the runtime event, and minimizes the time variability caused by the amount of event data, which results in a decrease in the latency time and an increase in the time determinacy when processing global events. The proposed method was tested for an event that required 4,000 internal path changes, and was found to lessen the latency time of global event processing by about 50% compared with the time required for general methods to do the same; in addition, it reduced the impact of the event data on the event processing time to about 30%.

  • Background: The understanding of ecosystem services can be quantified and qualitative to assess the impacts of changes in the ecosystem to support human well-being. In the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, sustainable use of ecosystem services has attracted the interest of a range of decision-makers. However, although there is a concern for biodiversity, natural ecosystem, and their services, linking ecosystems with conservation planning remains challenging. Results: This study assessed the first qualitative ecosystem services provided by the Mundok wetland with decision makers of the West/Yellow Sea region. Furthermore, this study applied the Rapid Assessment Wetland Ecosystem method to support natural resources management, improving living conditions. We identified that cultural and supporting services index are highly provided, but preparing a plan to increase the provisioning and regulating services in Mundok wetland is necessary. Conclusions: The assessment results can provide helpful information for ecosystem services assessment, habitat conservation, conservation planning, and decision-making at local level.

  • Differentiated service networks, based on bandwidth broker, perform the control and management of QoS provisioning for the QoS guaranteed services, However, the centralized bandwidth broker model has a scalability problem since it has centralized resource management for the admission control function of all call attempts, Therefore, in this paper, we proposea novel adaptive admission control mechanism according to the attempted call status for enhancing the scalability under the centralized bandwidth broker model in IP differentiated service networks, The proposed mechanism decouples the function of admission control from the bandwidth broker, So, the ingress edge node performs the admission control and the bandwidth broker performs the resource management and QoS provisioning, We also introduce an edge-to-edge path concepts and the ingress edge node performs the admission control under the allocated bandwidth to eachpath. The allocated bandwidth per path adaptively varies according to the status of the attempted calls, This mechanism can significantly reduce the number of communication message between the bandwidth broker and each edge node in the network and increase the bandwidth utilization via adaptable resource allocation, In this paper we study the adaptive admission control operation and show the efficient and extensive improvement through the performance evaluation.

  • A cloud system has to deal with highly variable workloads resulting from dynamic usage patterns in order to keep the QoS within the predefined SLA. Aside from the aspects regarding services, another emerging concern is to keep the energy consumption at a minimum. This requires the cloud providers to consider energy and performance trade-off when allocating virtualized resources in cloud data centers. In this paper, we propose a resource provisioning approach based on dynamic thresholds to detect the workload level of the host machines. The VM selection policy uses utilization data to choose a VM for migration, while the VM allocation policy designates VMs to a host based on its service reputation. We evaluated our work through simulations and results show that our work outperforms non-power aware methods that don't support migration as well as those based on static thresholds and random selection policy.

  • Short rotation woody crops belonging to the genera Populus L., Salix L., Pinus L., and Eucalyptus L'Her. have provided broad economic and ecological benefits throughout the world, including afforestation and reforestation along urban to rural gradients. Within the genus Populus, cottonwoods, poplars, aspens, and their hybrids (hereafter referred to as poplars) have been shown to exhibit favorable genotype ${\times}$ environment interactions, especially in the face of changing climates. Similar growth responses have been reported for Pinus, especially with white pine (Pinus strobus L.) in the North Central United States. This has led to current research priorities focused on ecosystem services for both genera. The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (2005) defines cultural, supporting, provisioning, and regulating ecosystem services. The overarching objective of this paper was to synthesize information about the potential of poplars to provide multiple ecosystem services when grown at sites with varying soil and climate conditions across landscape gradients from urban to rural areas. Specific objectives included: 1) providing background of the United States Forest Service and its Research and Development branch, 2) integrating knowledge of current poplar breeding and development with biomass provisioning and carbon regulating ecosystem services as they relate to changing climates in the North Central United States, and 3) providing a case study illustrating this integration through comparisons of poplar with white pine. Our results were evaluated in the context of climate change mitigation, with specific focus on selection of favorable genotypes for sequestering atmospheric carbon and reducing fossil fuel carbon emissions.
