  • The activation method of metallic foils is an important technique to measure the flux and energy of proton beams. In this paper, the method was used to measure the CSNS APEP proton flux at seven nominal proton energies ranging from 10 MeV to 70 MeV for beam spot sizes of the 20 mm × 20 mm and 50 mm × 50 mm. The reactions of natTi(p, x)48V, natNi(p, x)57Ni, natCu(p, x)58Co, and 27Al(p, x)24Na were employed to measure the proton beam flux with a range of 107-109 p/cm2/s. Furthermore, we also proposed a method using the activity ratio with a stacked-foil target to determine the energy spread of a Gaussian-like distribution for different nominal proton energies. The optimal combinations of Al, Cu, Ti, Ni, Mo, Fe, Nb, and In foils were adopted for the proton energies. The measured energy spreads for degraded beams of 30 MeV-70 MeV were found to be smaller than 10.00%.

  • Purpose: Proton therapy has been used for optimal cancer treatment by adapting its Bragg-peak characteristics. Recently, a tissue-sparing effect was introduced in ultrahigh-dose-rate (FLASH) radiation; the high-energy transmission proton beam is considered in proton FLASH therapy. In measuring high-energy/ultrahigh-dose-rate proton beam, Faraday Cup is considered as a dose-rate-independent measurement device, which has been widely studied. In this paper, the feasibility of the simply designed Faraday Cup (Poor Man's Faraday Cup, PMFC) for transmission proton FLASH therapy is investigated. Methods: In general, Faraday cups were used in the measurement of charged particles. The simply designed Faraday Cup and Advanced Markus ion chamber were used for high-energy proton beam measurement in this study. Results: The PMFC shows an acceptable performance, including accuracy in general dosimetric tests. The PMFC has a linear response to the dose and dose rate. The proton fluence was decreased with the increase of depth until the depth was near the proton beam range. Regarding secondary particles backscatter from PMFC, the effect was negligible. Conclusions: In this study, we performed an experiment to investigate the feasibility of PMFC for measuring high-energy proton beams. The PMFC can be used as a beam stopper and secondary monitoring system for transmission proton beam FLASH therapy.

  • Purpose: Proton therapy has different relative biological effectiveness (RBE) compared with X-ray treatment, which is the standard in radiation therapy, and the fixed RBE value of 1.1 is widely used. However, RBE depends on a charged particle's linear energy transfer (LET); therefore, measuring LET is important. We have developed a LET measurement method using the inefficiency characteristic of an EBT3 film on a proton beam's Bragg peak (BP) region. Methods: A Gafchromic EBT3 film was used to measure the proton beam LET. It measured the dose at a 10-cm pristine BP proton beam in water to determine the quenching factor of the EBT3 film as a reference beam condition. Monte Carlo (MC) calculations of dose-averaged LET (LETd) were used to determine the quenching factor and validation. The dose-averaged LETs at the 12-, 16-, and 20-cm pristine BP proton beam in water were calculated with the quenching factor. Results: Using the passive scattering proton beam nozzle of the National Cancer Center in Korea, the LETd was measured for each beam range. The quenching factor was determined to be 26.15 with 0.3% uncertainty under the reference beam condition. The dose-averaged LETs were measured for each test beam condition. Conclusions: We developed a method for measuring the proton beam LET using an EBT3 film. This study showed that the magnitude of the quenching effect can be estimated using only one beam range, and the quenching factor determined under the reference condition can be applied to any therapeutic proton beam range.

  • In this study, we developed a neutron time-of-flight (nTOF) measurement system for a 1.7-MV tandem proton accelerator with a target covered with 300-nm-thick lithium (Li) layer. With implementation of beam chopping module after its ion source, the accelerator is configured to operate in pulsed-beam mode with a pulse width <50 ns at 20-kHz repetition rate. This enables the gamma flash-type nTOF measurement system to identify the neutron generated with 3-MeV proton beam energy. The nTOF system consists of a 30" cylindrical NaI(Tl) and four stilbene scintillation detectors. The NaI(Tl) scintillator is placed 50 cm from the Li target to measure the time of beam irradiation on the target, and the stilbene detectors are placed 2 and 2.4 m away to measure nTOF at each location. The nTOF system successfully measured the generated neutron energy at irradiated proton energies of 2.6 and 3.0 MeV with an average energy resolution of 15%.

  • Lifetime control technique by proton implantation has become an useful tool for production of modern power devices. In this work, punch-through type diodes were irradiated with protons for the high speed power diode fabrication. Proton irradiation which was capable of controlling carrier's lifetime locally was carried out at the various energy and dose conditions. Characterization of the device was performed by current-voltage, capacitance-voltage and reverse recovery time measurement. We obtained enhanced reverse recovery time characteristics which was about $45\;\%$ of original device reverse recovery time and about $73\;\%$ of electron irradiated device reverse recovery time. The measurement results showed that proton irradiation technique was able to effectively reduce minority carrier lifetime without degrading the other characteristics.

  • Research about the proton nuclear reaction is actively achieving on the proton therapy including material development of fusion reactor. The proton induced gamma ray energy(2754, 1386 keV) spectrum of 27Al(p,3p+n)24Na reaction was measured with 100 MeV high energy proton beam. The proton beam in the experiment was derived from 100 MeV proton linear accelerator in the KOMAC. We measured the gamma ray intensity ratio of the decay level from the energy spectrum. The previous results have been compared with the current result. Strength of measured gamma rays will provide very important information though decide high energy gamma radiation detection efficiency.

  • To get the stable and optimized proton beam in the KIRAMS-13 cyclotron which installed in the regional cyclotron center, it is necessary to measure the transverse profile of proton beam. Beam Induced Fluorescence monitor is one of the non-destructive methods to measure the beam profiles, and it has many advantages such as a simple structure, real-time measurement, and minimum energy loss. The objective of this research is the design and development of Beam Induced Fluorescence monitor to measure the proton beam profiles in the KIRAMS-13 cyclotron.

  • Proton irradiation technology was used for improvement of switching characteristics of the PT-IGBT. Proton irradiation was carried out at 5.56 MeV energy with $1{\times}10^{12}/cm^2$ doze from the back side of the wafer. Characterization of the device was performed by I-V, breakdown voltage, threshold voltage, and turn-off delay time measurement. For irradiated device by 5.56 MeV energy, the breakdown voltage and the threshold voltage were 730 V and 6.5~6.6 V, respectively. The turn-off time has been reduced to 170 ns, which was original $6\;{\mu}s$ for the un-irradiated device.
