To study encapsulation method for large-area organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), red emitting OLEDs were fabricated, on which LiF and Al were deposited as inorganic protective films. And then the OLED was attached to flat glass by printing method using epoxy. In case of direct coating of epoxy onto OLED by printing method, luminance and current efficiency were remarkably decreased because of the damage to the OLED by epoxy. In case of depositing LiF and Al as inorganic protective films and then coating of epoxy onto OLED, luminance and current efficiency were not changed. OLED lifetime was more increased through inorganic protective films between OLED and flat glass than that without any encapsulation (8.8 h), i.e., 47 (LiF/Al/epoxy/glass), 62 (LiF/Al/LiF/epoxy/glass), and 84 h (LiF/Al/Al/epoxy/glass). The characteristics of OLED encapsulated with inorganic protective films (attached to flat glass) showed the possibility of application of protective films.
A pure hafnium-carbide (HfC) coating layer was deposited onto carbon/carbon (C.C) composites using a vacuum plasma spray system. By adopting a SiC buffer layer, we successfully integrated C.C composites with a $100-{\mu}m-thick$ protective coating layer of HfC. Compared to the conventional chemical vapor deposition process, the HfC coating process by VPS showed increased growth rate, thickness, and hardness. The growth behavior and morphology of HfC coatings were investigated by FE-SEM, EDX, and XRD. From these results, it was shown that the addition of a SiC intermediate layer provided optimal surface conditions during the VPS procedure to enhance adhesion between C.C and HfC (without delamination). The thermal ablation test results shows that the HfC coating layer perfectly protected inner C.C layer from thermal ablation and oxidation. Consequently, we expect that this ultra-high temperature ceramic coating method, and the subsequent microstructure that it creates, can be widely applied to improve the thermal shock and oxidation resistance of materials under ultra-high temperature environments.
Fiber coatings are essential in optical fiber manufacturing, since they provide the protective layers from the surface damages and the adequate fiber strength. Flow and temperature fields of coating liquid in a fiber coating applicator are numerically investigated by using a commercial CFD software. The main focus of this computational study is on the thermal effects by viscous dissipation and the effects of coating supply temperature on the final fiber coating thickness. The numerical results reveal that the thermal effects play a major role in the high-speed optical fiber coating process and give substantial influences on the determination of coating thickness. Changing the supply temperature of coating liquid is found to relieve the radial variation of coating liquid viscosity in the coating die and it can be an effective way to control the fiber coating thickness.
In order to clarify the durability of protective coatings for maritime steel structures, various anti-corrosive organic coated steel samples were exposed for twelve years in semitropical marine environment at Miyakojima Island, Okinawa, JAPAN. Samples were various organic coated steel pipes, 4.0 m in length and 150 mm in diameter. While the bare steel pipe entirely corroded in 4.5 mm thickness in four and half years, these organic coated steel pipes exhibited protective appearances after twelve-year-exposure except for the defect in the coatings. Polyethylene (PE) lining pipe exhibited a good protective performance. Urethane painted pipe was also good but some barnacles stuck to its surface. A combination of petrolatum tape and FRP cover showed sufficient corrosion resistance for steel surface. The correlation in results between exposure and laboratory acceleration test was examined. It was found that salt spray test (SST) results corresponded to rusted area of scratched portion and that adhesion change of coating layer corresponded to the rotating immersion test result. Among the on-site measured data, volume resistivity is utilized for the index of corrosion protection performance of organic coating.

Several heavy duty coatings at an every kind industry facilities to various systems currently have been applied review to the many industry fields. Corrosion-protective characteristics in the case of novolac epoxy among them and unsaturated polyester have been applied most widely. epoxy and flake heavy duty coatings are applied for such reason in an every kind facilities(stack, FGD, cooler, chemical tank etc) of a fossil-fuel power plants Cases of the fossil-fuel power plants are exposed to more severe corrosion environment compared with other facilities and It is difficult to display the performance of long-term method at apply to be the partial. Our study shows fluoro-polymer composite coating method to overcome of the limit. The comparison did previous method and heavy duty coating about FGD plants most at a corrosion environment among fossil-fuel power plants. Additionally, other facilities examined different heavy duty method. The design mode of fluoro-polymer composite coating according to an every kind facilities show extensive methods that are characteristic revelation of film(top, middle and primer layer) composition of the paint, film thickness in accordance with a facilities corrosion and the corrosion protective effectiveness to come into being use fluoro-polymer composite with heavy duty paint(epoxy).
In this study, we attempted to reduce firing voltage of AC-PDP by alloying MgO protective Layer with CaO. Also, spray coating of single crystal MgO powder has been used to improving Exo-electron emission characteristics and reducing the statistical discharge delay in plasma displays. The properties of discharge depending upon the single crystal MgO powder are investigated. Plasma display having powder coated MgCaO Protective Layer shows lower driving voltage and higher efficacy than of uncoated, conventional panel.
The Fukushima accident in 2011 revealed some major flaws in traditional nuclear fuel materials under accidental conditions. Thus, the focus of research has shifted toward "accident tolerant fuel" (ATF). The aim of this approach is to develop fuel material solutions that lead to improved reactor safety. The application of protective coatings on the surface of nuclear fuel cladding has been proposed as a near-term solution within the ATF framework. Many coating materials are being developed and evaluated. In this article, an overview of different zirconium-based alloys currently in use in the nuclear industry is provided, and their performances in normal and accidental conditions are discussed. Coating materials proposed by different institutions and organizations, their performances under different conditions simulating nuclear reactor environments are reviewed. The strengths and weaknesses of these coatings are highlighted, and the challenges addressed by different studies are summarized, providing a basis for future research. Finally, technologies and methods used to synthesize thin-film coatings are outlined.
We investigated the influences of cobalt coating deposited by DC electroplating on the ferritic stainless steel, STS 430, as a protective layer on a metallic interconnect for SOFC applications. Cobalt coated STS 430 revealed a uniform and denser-packing oxide surface and a reduced growth rate of $Cr_2O_3$ scales after oxidation at $800^{\circ}C$in air. Cobalt coating layer was oxidized to $CoCo_2O_4$ and Co containing mixed oxide spinels such as $Co_2CrO_4$, $CoCr_2O_4$, and $CoCrFeO_4$. The area specific resistance value of Co coated sample was $0.020\;{\Omega}cm^2$ lower than that of uncoated at $800^{\circ}C$ in air during 500 h. After 1000 h oxidation, cobalt oxide coating layer suppressed chromium outward diffusion.
Protective surface coating for concrete is available for applying to concrete structures for protecting chloride attack. However, the useful data obtained from real marine environment for surface coating materials is not sufficient yet in Korea and thus the engineers face many difficulties to apply the coating method in durability design. Surface-coated concrete specimens were fabricated and installed around the piers of Seohae grand bridge to observe long-term performance in actual marine environment. In this study, the results of durability of surface coatings for 3 years were reported.
